EDIT: 2 June
Campaign now available at Mission4Today

Guten Tag Fliegeren,
You are shortly to be assigned to your new Geschwader - JG27. You will be spearheading the Luftwaffe's efforts in the North African theatre.

You will be working closely with our Fascist Italian brothers in many roles as our resources in this theatre are not yet fully in place.

Nonetheless you will perform your duty with the utmost diligence.
It is time to crush the British desert vermin!

Glad you like the pics. I think that is one of the things I like most about mission building - taking screenies. I have hundreds on my HD for the various campaigns I've made.
That base - I was looking at pic of a dusty, chaotic LW base when I was making it so I hope it captures the feel of the times.

'Tis a problem alright. I'm actually on holiday (as of today - yay!) so might be able to squeeze in some late night online sessions. I'll be hanging around the boards a bit so keep an eye out.

Great to see you've been busy FSM. Really enjoyed your previous campaigns, Kondor Legion and Battle of Britain. You've created immersive environments and a nice variety of missions. But what I've really liked best is that somehow you seem to have a knack for setting up the AI flights so they don't revert to their usual aggravating behavior, instead acting more like you'd hope they would! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif I don't know how you do that but IMHO it puts your campaigns at the top of my list. Looking forward to another one! ありがとう!

FlatSpinMan
03-22-2007, 08:58 PM
First time I've heard that comment, Nachwuch. Thanks very much. I try to route the AI and mess with their speed and altitude so that they pop up from all angles. I get a bit sick of the usual head on merge although with the AI's radar-like ability to detect the enemy from 5km away it is hard to avoid that. Essentially I enjoy trying to catch the payer off guard so that he is forced to keep an eye on what's happening around him.

Unfortunately I have no ability to control the incessant sidways rolling behaviour that they seem to like doing. However, as I tend to have one shot at a plane then push on through and look for another target this problem is less annoying than if I cling to its tail.

In this current campaign I am working on giving more choices to the player so that they have to think about whether to complete their assigned mission or instead adapt to the new situation.

And some more pics while I'm at it.

2 questions if I may...

Will the pilot be flying the EMil through the whole thing, or will he get into a Bf109F?

and

WHat is the skin on the Emil in the very 2nd Photo in the thread? Its the best I have ever seen.

I love the idea of using a B-25 for a BR.20 - but I hope its a C model or so? Don't wanna go up against a J model http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

FlatSpinMan
03-24-2007, 07:39 AM
Cheers, Blutarski! Much appreciated.

Regarding the skins, all the 109s in the campaign, including the one in the 2nd picture are from CanonUK. Correction, there is one from RaFiGer. This is in the pic of the 109 and Tomahawk racing.

The player wil stay in the Emil as the time frame of the campaign is very limited so as to allow me the possibilty of Willi Jedermann taking part in another major event of 1941.

About the B-25, I keep changing my mind about which version to use. Both look good but the hitting power of the solid nosed one might be a bit over the top.

@Ugly Kid - a good skin plus the new maps equals really amazing graphics I think.

A 1944 B-25 doesn't belong on a map with early war aircraft, it's performance and defensive armament are ridiculous compared to what it is being substituted as.

What a crock of sh it! The allies get a 1944 B-25 with guns out the a ss and so fast that an Emil can hardly catch it. To even things out why don't you "disquise" a 1942 bf110 aircraft with mk108s as a 1941 aircraft?
You are just another dum b douc hebag, making allied biased maps, and you are too du mb to even see it.

I am sure whatever Italian piece of sh it you are substituting a 1944 B-25 for, didn't have anywhere near the armament, armor or performance.

Have fun in your fantasy land you je rk-off.

The fascinating thing is that nobody is asking you to play this campaign.

He is not using an Italian plane to represent a B-25. He is using a B-25 to represent an Italian aircraft that is not in the sim

Aside from my revulsion at your unwarranted attack on FSM, it is worth mentioning that he doesn't get paid for these efforts, and this is done as a favor to the community for free.

I do not know what is wrong with you, but it is plain there is something very wrong

If I may, I'd like to take the opportunity to ask Flatspinman a question. I got excited on your next campaign and went and downloaded the Legion Kondor campaign. The problem is, the campaign set up screen does not recognize the campaign. It does not appear in the menu. I have extracted the campaign into the FB/missions/campaign/DE folder and copied the skins into their respective folders. Any help appreciated, thanks!

Great work!

Pflyer is a noob who is always complaining of red bias in maps online.

PF flyer, you just need more practise, mate. The FW190D in 1944 for example is one of the best prop planes in the game, and its a very late 1944 planes, yet is in most 1944 online maps. If you cannot beat Allied props in this plane, then it just shows you are no a good pilot I am afraid.

I think you must be a new virtual pilot who thinks that Allied planes are better because they can 'turn tighter', and this is not the case

I know a few of these 'pilots' myself. Its sometimes funny when they complain about Bf109F4 vs Spitfire MkV maps being 'unbalanced' and that the Spitfire V is too GOOD. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Practise energy fighting and you will find out just how good the blue planes are. The FW190 is usually one the best planes of the year (FW190 best in 1942/FW190A6 best in 1943/FW190D9 best in 1944 for exmple)But you must be a good pilot to use them.

To claim that most online maps are red biased is just the sign of a bad pilot who just turns and burns all the time I am afraid. Try using proper LW tactics.

Keep practising and you will learn.

The really strange part is this "hack" is for the axis and their benefit! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

I really think the skinners that come up with the ideas for hacks are very clever and the skins awesome. The hacks always add just the little extra something towrds the immersion which adds much to campaigns.

The frustrating part about hacks is flying against them as they are usually far better then the aircraft they are filling in for. It's just the nature of the beast and nobody is forced to fly any campaign as already said.

This should be the best part of SoW as far as I'm concerned, real period plane sets. They are starting at the begining and working their way to the end. The gaps in plane stes should be rather small, a boon the campaign builders.

Before I get way off topic.

Once again it looks awesome FlatSpinMan and I can't wait to fly it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Since (as I understand it) you're flying for the Axis in this campaign, the Italians getting a "UFO" for a bomber won't mean a whole lot from the player's perspective, eh? Besides, as a 109 driver it's all about escorting and dealing with the escorts; the bombers are just dessert. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif

@Hkuusela - from your post I'm wondering which folder you put into the DE folder. That was my first campaign and the file setup was pretty messy. Just check that you have only put a folder containing about 70 files XXXX.mis or XXXX.props They contain the mission info. Check it out and see if you have. Following a post from Rudi_Jaeger, the man behind many of the excellent hacks we have, I have added this beauty into a couple of missions.

Gentlemen, I give you the Piaggi 108! Of course it wasn't in operation at this time but I have uncovered documents revealing the presence of some advanced prototypes in the North African theatre that underwent combat trials.

Hey Phil, yeah if I have time I'll release a Tomahawk desert campaign. The player will be flying with the RAF but the character is a NZer (like me. There'll be a fair few missions which are surprisingly similar to the LW campaign (there's a coincidence)but I will have longer time period for the action to take place in so there'll be a lot of different things too.

You can count me in for the 1st DL. Great screenies & skins and one of my favorite topics. Keep up the good work. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

After doing a 3 sided desert campaign I can tell you that if you rewrite the same missions to fly from the other side, it somehow becomes much harder no matter which side you are on. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Now I still can't do that but have learned to accept it. Who knows if the RAF side will ever eventuate - I'd like to but time is limited, and as you well know, this stuff takes ages to put together.

@lowfighter - I'm afraid it's stationary as it is too tricky to get that many vehicles working properly. Anyway, as you rip by them at 500km/h spraying death and destruction all around you who's going to notice http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif

Do you have an estimated release date for your campaign FlatSpin? I've been looking for a proper German North African campaign and this looks to be it.

I downloaded your BoB campaign just now and I am going to try it out.

Sorry, you'll have to speak louder. That's my bad ear. Can't make out a word you're saying.http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Anyway, the BoB one should keep you busy for a day or two. Just note that not all flights in it are really long, (especially if you get shot down over Britain, as I am wont to do) and the time skip feature is there for a reason. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

"Proper" German NA campaign? Doo-de-doo. La-la-la-la. Whistles innocently http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif I must confess I have taken a few liberties with history - okay, okay, I made it all up! There. I've said it. Seriously, my aim is fun, surprise and challenge for the player and creating a "feel" of the real campaign.

FSM, what resolution and detail settings do you use? Your screenies always look great.

FlatSpinMan
03-27-2007, 02:08 AM
Hey MrMojok,
I run on Perfect with aa on 4x (had to check - actually thought it was 2x)and resolution of 1280x1024 on a TFT monitor.
Here's the graphics part of my config.
Sky=1
Forest=2
LandShading=3
LandDetails=2

LandGeom=2
TexLarge=1
TexLandQual=3
TexLandLarge=1

VideoSetupId=17
Water=1
Effects=1
ForceShaders1x=1

My PC is just a P4 3.2GHZ with an nVidia FX5900 and crappy onboard sound.

It runs okay for me, sometimes slows down. I've almost always used these settings so really hate dropping to Excellent even though I have noticed it's faster. Guess I am probably used to playing in slow motion http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I've noticed that in some other campaigns, like Storm Clouds, my PC just seems to struggle and crash to desktop. No idea why but it's happened separate three times with that campaign on the first mission. Shame really as it looked really good. Same happened two days ago with the Burma DGen campaign.

Because my PC is not top of the line anymore I do as much as I can to ease the burden on it - hence most AI get no parachutes, some bombers are actually unarmed to reduce the amount of tracer to be tracked, also most other flights are set to Radio Silence for most of the waypoints. This also stops the confusing and misleading heading and altitude instructions.

I think the main thing about my screenshots is that I pause the game and arrange the shots really carefully. aa makes a big difference, too.

FSM,
I just started your Legion Kondor campaign. But I've got a baffling problem. In the first two missions I've flown so far, the custom skin for my crate won't display on the CR-42. I get the default "Italian" skin as shipped with the game. From what I've seen, all other planes are displaying skins correctly.

I've checked the missions in FMB, and all seems OK as regards skin assignment for my plane. Is there something I'm missing in either setup/config/difficulty?

Thanks!

Hi all,
I'm glad to hear you are enjoying/have enjoyed other campaigns.

Lurch - did you set the skin in the "Arming" page before you hit "fly" as you would in a QMB mission? For campaigns it is impossible for the maker to set the player's skin. I realised this after 2 hours of thinking I had done something wrong the first time put together a mission.

Bremspropellor - if I have time I do intend to make a Desert Air Force campaign. Time is the problem though. If I make it you will be sure to see the blatant self-promoting threads posted here!

Cid - will do. Bet you're happy to be finished. I still don't know what happened with the mission I flew.

Well, I have managed to squeeze in a couple more missions but I have really hit a busy period at work and in life generally so things have really slowed down in the past week and don't show any signs of changing soon.

I still have lots of fact checking to do - it's not going to be historical but I want to get the main points right. Of course there are still lots of mission ideas I want to develop, too.

So far we're at 22 missions -that can't be right, seems too many- just checked again and it is correct. I really can't believe it's that many. I guess it's because they're much less complex to build, test and play than the BoB ones.

Anyway, here are a few more shots of recently made missions.

FSM you should get onto ebay and pick up an ATI X800,Nvidia 6800 or maybe a 7600 AGP and get rid of that 5900.

I had a 5900 ultra and its terrible for running IL2 when youlook at the shorelines in perfect your framerate drops to about 15fps.

You should be able to pick up one of the cards above for around 40-45 second hand if you keep checking ebay (use your countries ebay only). Where are you from?

Scorpion.233

Buying a 7600 is a waste with SOW around the corner. Better save up for something better.

Also, thread needs more release.

Xiolablu3

Its definitely not a waste of money, for 40-50

I wouldnt call SOW 'around the corner' I bet Christmas at the earliest.

It would also allow him to play games which he cannot now, such as Oblivion, GRAW, NWN2, ArmA etc. The 5900 struggles terribly with these games.

I went through that frustration as well. As powerful as the FMB is, I can't believe that the mission maker can't set the user's skin. It's a pain in the arse if you ask me. Hopefully the mission builder in BoB won't work that way.

Also, bump! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It's just trying to cater to the player. By the nature of the game the plane's skin will be set to the player's last choice of skin. If you really want them to make sure they use that skin, just politely remind them as many have done in the mission brief.

Excellent pics! I'll look forward to this campaign, but for now, it's time to take a little revenge on some Emils for all the Tomahawk pounding going on here!

Yeah, teh only reason I mentioned it was because I had a 5900 Ultra and found it struggling badly recently in games. PIcked up a X800 Pro for 45 off ebay and sold the 5900 ultra for 20, so for 25 I got a much better card which now plays IL2 46 in perfect with no very low fps drops. (without limiting it to shader 1.X which I had to do with a 5900 ultra since the shader 2.0 support is so bad)

Hi again guys,
Funny you should mention about the graphics card. Just last week my wife and I were shopping for a video/HDD camera and a dvd-recorder. Anyway, we ended up paying more than we should have I guess but got good stuff.

Right after we walked out of the shop my wife said "Oh well. Now we can't upgrade the PC soon".
Me:"That was an option!!!"
I just thought we were buying a new camera, didn't know there were these hidden undercurrents.

Oh well, I'll just wait till BOB is out.

I should look at buying some new components, especially a soundcard but I really don't have the faintest idea how to install them and am reluctant to mess anything up.

Glad people are interested in this campaign, always makes me more careful to detail.

I'm actually finding the airield locations on the map a bit annoying. I want to use the desert one but find it's too close to the one in the Northeast. I've already made lots of missions on it,too so I'm not about to change now.

This all started as a fun 10 mission mini-campaign for the Tomahawk. Still, it's been fun playing the missions.

Some more pics from different missions. Skins not finalised yet.

AHhhh, come on man, dont be a chicken! You will never learn anything!

SLotting a new graphics card into the AGP slot or putting in a new sound card into a PCI slot, is no more difficult than putting a game into a SNES or Megadrive!

The only other thing you need to do is to uninstall the old drivers in Add/remove programs (just like uninstalling a game) and run the executeable with the new drivers.

EVen if you do 'mess something up' (very, VERY doubtful) its an excuse to learn! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

'This Ju52 scheme is also superb. The skin file has a picture of a bee in a red circle with the letters PGP. Does anyone know who this beauty belongs to?'

I guess it was made by Foobar. He is a moderator in the german forum and uses this symbol for his skins. However, I cannot find the skin on his web page:

Hello,
Been doing a bit of mission testing for another campaign builder as well as squeezing in the odd AVG mission. Also having a crack at the Donbass campaign that was recently released. I managed to get bounced totally taken off guard by some 109s. That was great to see, means the missions have been put together carefully.

Today I put in a couple of hours of base building for the Desert Online map though which I'll be adding to the missions soonish. Will post some pics tonight or tomorrow.

That is an amazing skin, isn't it? My reaction was much the same when I first saw it in game - Foo.Bar did really excellent work on this one. I think I found it in a campaign named Operation Theseus if anyone wants to grab it.

Progress is slow, working on templates. I'd usually make them first then build missions around them but I wanted to get mission ideas down on paper as it were before I forgot them. I've never populated a map before and even though this one is not so big, nor full of towns it is taking me ages. Might jst call it done and get on with arranging the missions in some kind of comprehensible order, do some work on the briefings and add in missions needed to fill in the gaps and provide some more mainstream missions. So far I have mostly been making ones that are a bit different or that have unpleasant surprises for the player in them.

Just a tip for when I finish this sucker (and why do they always take longer than you think?) - Keep your eyes open all the way through the mission. I have set enemy flights arriving from various directions, altitudes and times during the missions so,in the words of any nation's drill sergeant or flight instructor, "F$@&ing stay awake!!!"

They say, "It's the bandit you don't see that gets you!" So make sure YOU are the unseen bandit!

Thank you Treetop and Karaya,
I just hope the campaign matches expectations. I started posting all these pics because I thought it would be a short, fun, quickly-finished camapign. That has not proven to be the case, at least in terms of length (I hope it is still fun).

Today my wife is away on a business trip so I actually had five minutes to concentrate on the campaign. I just went through for continuity purposes and to check that flights are where they should be. Some good surprise for the player I think. This campaign is probably harder in terms of flying/combat difficulty than my other two.

I need to add quite a few more missions in the next week or two and hopefully have it ready for release shortly thereafter. Doh! Then I have to make some movies and see if they work out alright. This takes me a loooong time but I'll try to get this out shortish.

Hi FSM,
I see you are using a pilot skin with hacked goggles on, (modified mine with FBS's template?).
I don't do this hack on my skins as the 3d model doesn't support it properly.
I also didn't aproove what Fly by Shooter did to my skins on his pilot template in the first place, (he never asked for permission anyway) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif, but if you want goggles on pilots I can make you skins with the apropriate ones and not the AN 6530 (American) from the old CFS2 pilot template that FBS one uses.
Thanks for the understanding. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

By the way, it's worth mentioning that these screenshots - along with many others in this thread - are strong endorsements for Mat Manager. It's amazing the difference Mat's decals make. Using Mat Manager makes even the default skins look great; almost like custom skins themselves.

So many talented people making an already splendid product even more so... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Hi there elephant http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif,
Sorry about the skins. I just assumed they were yours. They came in one of the desert campaigns I downloaded while looking for skins but I'm not sure which one, sorry.
I just used them for variety but as they are not the genuine article I'll change them. If you have time to make any more NA skins (with or withot goggles) that'd be great but it's not essential http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif.

Treetop - very good point. I know that MATManager is kind of a pain to get running with 1946 but it makes such a big difference to how the game looks. I couldn't use it for a while when I first got 46 and it really irritated me having to use default markings, especially for the US, NZ and Japan. The German and British ones weren't too bad but the others were horrible.
If anyone is reading this - download and install it now (just don't ask me how I go tit working).

OK,
but you have to wait some days as now I'm in one of my more and more often buisness trips.
I remember giving skins to NSU for his "Bir Hacheim" Campaign but they surely haven't got hacked goggles on as all of my skins after all, because from close distance the pilot seems to wear two pairs which I find rather weird.

Hi elephant,
I did download that campaign so that MAY be where they came from - not certain though. Anyway, only make the skins if you have time. I already have some great ones from you and anyway, for the start of the campaign pilots will be wearing European uniforms to show the lack of preparation for the North African theatre.

Sorry Foo.bar! Great skin though.I'll check PMs now.

You want any desert RAF fighter skins?

FlatSpinMan
04-18-2007, 12:43 AM
Ooh. Very tempting, as I like your stuff. So far I have just been using the default Tomahawk IIa skins as it is pretty good. Due to the very limited period I'm working in, April to early June 1941, there aren't many planes in use, just the Tomahawk and the Hurri. Actually, you don't happen to have any generic desert Hurri Mks I or II lying about the place? The Mk I is more accurate but with MAT Manager I keep getting early RAF roundels so have been using theMk II instead. If you do, I'd be honoured to use them and I certainly appreciate the offer.
Cheers,

FlatSpinMan
04-18-2007, 06:34 AM
Sweet! I guess a MkI would be the best really. Is it possible to put roundels and fin flashes on but still have MAT Manager for the lettering? I guess not since I never see that.

Anyway, could you make me a blank skin with fin flashes and a generic skin with roundels etc but no codes or limited codes (you know, like the Hurri's in Cobra's BOB campaign) in case I want to use that for a whole flight. Which option do you think would be better?

I wa just sneking a peek at your skins on M4T today and I see Hurri's are (one of) your fortes. I should fly RAF more.

Thanks a million.

Thanks for the great skins Kristorf! I sent you an email with a bit of a problem.

Anyway, time for a bit more bomber action again I thought so here are a coupe of pics of Rudi_Jaeger's fine Piaggi P.108's in "combat trials" in North Africa. Gret work on this skin.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/FlatSpinMan/PiaggiHit.jpg

And during the dgfight that raged around the two bombers I managed to acquire this damage when one of teh enemy flew into me. Quite an awesome moment really - I was lining up a target when suddenly I see a flash of white wing and roundel rocketing past my cockpit. It was a Tomahawk that misjudged its approach and managed to strike my plane at a closing speed of around750km/h, destroying tehe engine block alone.

Which is why I was happy to see my wingman subsequently do this to another one.

So is the 110 a player option?

FlatSpinMan
05-02-2007, 08:00 AM
Umm... probably not. I kind of like the idea of giving the player a ride in a few planes but it's not too realistic (although as I have said before, this campiagn is not historically accurate). To be honest I was just looking through a list of planes in NA in 1941 when I realised I had forgotten to include it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif so I have been adding it into a few missions. Still not very often though as the campaign is intended to represent just the very early stages of Luftwaffe involvement in the theatre. I know you're a big fan of biplanes so there are a couple for missions with Gladiators in there for you to kill. They're not totally historical in the campaign timeline but otherwise you just get to see Hurris, Blenheims and Tomahawks. Still, shooting down Blenheims has long been a favourite hobby of mine. You get them to explode with about two cannon shells if you hit the right spot.

To fly the 110 instead of say a 109 in a campaign, you only need to modify the "Class air" line in every ".mis" file, and of course change the skins accordingly ....
The only problem that may arise is when the "original' plane (the 109 in our case) carries different weapons (mainly bombs and/or rockets) than the "new" plane (110 in our case).
Then you only need to change the "weapons" line to "default" (unless you know what type of bombs/rockets the "new" plane can carry) and here you go !!
Of course if the "original" mission was bombing something and the new "default" weapons only carries MGs and Cannons then the nature of the mission will become "slightly different" .....

When I especially like a campaign I very often refly it after swapping a 109 for a 190 for ex, of course you can also change your opponent's planes the same way ....

My current DCG campaign is in a 110 squad over Tobruk, with emphasis on air-ground missions. It's an interesting aircraft to learn, and I still suck air-air in it but am getting pretty good with my bombing/strafing--I just have to hope to avoid interceptors. For the campaign featured in this thread I'll happily strap on a 109; I was just curious when it looked like some of those screenies looked like they were from the 110's POV, as though that were the player's aircraft.

Probably some track file arcanery I haven't learned that lets you change focus to other aircraft or something. I'll stop hijacking the thread now.

More screenies, I'm drooling here! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

FlatSpinMan
05-03-2007, 09:15 AM
@SpinDry - do you know about the F2 button? It lets you see the next friendly aircraft. Shift F2 does the same for enemy aircraft.
If you are watching a track and want to see other aircraft just make sure you select "Manual View Control" before playing it. Then you can jump from plane to plane (external only except for your own plane). That's how the intro tracks and movies are made.

WWSpinDry
05-03-2007, 09:22 AM
Actually, no, I didn't know you could use F2 for that. Interesting. I'm fairly new to the IL-2 environment and haven't used the padlock or external stuff so never really had any motive to understand how their commands worked. Being able to shift focus during tracks, though ... that's a very cool ability. Thanks!

FlatSpinMan
05-03-2007, 09:33 AM
Ah, in that case I also recommend F3 which gives you a nifty fly-by shot. I estimate about 75% of my flying time is spent looking at myself whizz by in this view. With all the external views you can adjust the distance by using the same controls as you use for your Gunsight Zoom function.

F6 and F8 also show views - maybe behind you and below you or something? Not too sure. I only worked out the padlock thing a few months ago myself. I'd always wondered how to get the AI wingmen to attack your target like the menu command states. Hit F4 when you've a bandit in sight and the target is locked. I don't really use it though as it is really diorienting - trying to fly the plane while the POV is aimed through the bottom of your seat etc. It'd be handy for attacking US heavies though - massed attacks on one target, just like the LW really did.

HuninMunin
05-03-2007, 09:53 AM
F6 is external padlock wich switches you to a view similar to the F2 sight but with the centre of the screen fixed onto the nearest bandit.

F8 fixes the view to the six of your plane - you can adjust the height angle though.

Wow! Thanks for all teh interest and help answering questions guys.
Han - if you keep playing I'll keep making them - although an imminently arriving daughter may have a thing or two to say about that -aaaaahhh!!
I was almost finished making the missions but then got a couple of ideas to harass the player further so am making them up now.
Enforcer - I'll finish off your samples when I can, hopefully next week sometime. Thanks for the praise, I have to say that blatant self-promotion (online at least) is one of my strong points. No sense letting hundreds of hours work go unnoticed I think. I enjoy making them almost as much as I enjoy flying but still, it takes a long time to do as you, Beebop and especially BB46cid (or R2D2 or whatever his new handle is - I still think of him as Chuck Older), can attest.
Moselgot and MAXtheHitman - if you have a chance then the 46 dvd is well worth it. I'm flattered you'd buy it to play this. I just hope it is worthy of all the attention. Starting to get nervous now!

A few pics of the newer missions.

Hi there, guys.
Just watched "The 300". Pretty damned cool movie though on reflection maybe I shouldn't have taken my wife. Japanese women are lovely and extremely beautiful (my one at least) but not the biggest fans of beheadings and blood spatters, it must be said. Anyway, that delayed my progress ever so slightly but I'm extremely pleased to announce that I have uploaded it to Mission4Today - the site of all discerning uploaders. It still needs to be approved by admin but should be available for download shortly, a mere 4 months after I thought it would be finished! Of course the campaign is not perfect - I could work on it an damend things forever, but it is as done as it will ever be. I hope you have fun playing through it - I did.

Wow! Those boys are on top of things! Already ready to download! Thanks Mission4Today - you do a great job. I hadn't even finished typing the announcement!Oleg should be paying you boys.

Thanks FSM, been looking forward to this - downloaded and ready to install. In the readme, you give some of your computer specs...what monitor resolution do you use?

As for "300", I took my teenagers to see it. Once you get used to the way it is presented and how over the top it is, it is watchable. Bit graphic in the gore department though....

@SidCheshire - I use 12XX x 960 - can't remember exactly. I really liked the visuals in the 300 but thought that the parts set in Sparta with the wife could have easily been edited out. It's a comic book - no need for background or what seemed like a token female role.
@Jasonbirder - hope so!

If you want to update Legion Kondor you need to go to the download page (http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=20)
If you are logged in you will see near the top 'you are the owner of this download and can edit it at any time'

Was right behind a P40 getting ready to finish him off, and all of a sudden my plane catches on fire and goes into a dive. I look to the right and there I see a MC200 with 1 wing going spinning past me. Saw that I lost my entire tail after I bailed

Can missions in Luftwaffe Pilot: Afrika be flown single or offline? And do I download this from Mission4today? I have IL2 1946.

FlatSpinMan
06-03-2007, 10:03 AM
Hi Drsmith - at the moment if you download the campaign it can only be flown offline as a campaign. However, if you go into the mian folder of IL and find the DE campaign folder you can copy the mission files into single missions or even co-ops. I believe you have to change some things if you want them to work as co-ops but have no idea of whats required.

At the other guys - ha ha ha ha - getting bounced is my ultimate goal as mission builder!

I have actually made the AI in this one harder than usual - they're still mainly just average AI but I tend to set them higher, faster an dfrequently arriving at awkward times or from low 6, just to make the player's life more stressful. Great to hear it's working.

As FSM said you can copy the missions into either the Single/De folder or into any co-op folder. No changes are required for Single Play. In co-op you must open the mission in the FMB (or in Notepad but I'd rather leave that method to those who can better explain it) and untick the "Player" plane. However, if you or the host is willing to be forced into the default campaign player's plane, you don't even need to do that.

Hope this helped.

BTW FSM, this is an awesome campaign so far. I fly very, very few and I am quite impressed with this one. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Thanks for answering drsmith's questions while I was indisposed with a killer hangover, lads.

Haigotron, glad you're having fun with it.
Like others have posted, sometimes discretion really is the better part of valour. I hope I didn't make it too hard and unfair but I was planning to show how unbalanced, shocking and pitiless dogfighting could be.

BTW - FlatSpinMan's 109 gunnery tip. DON'T use Shift+F1 to switch to gunsight view. When dogfighting just wait until the reticle centres itself and you'll be almost guaranteed a good hit. It's just like the P-51's ace-maker -itpretty much calculates the deflection for you This really increased my kill ratios.

Haigotron
06-04-2007, 10:18 AM
When you say centers itself, do you mean with the center of the plane (i.e. center of the view) meaning it will be only half visible in the reticle? or the center of the reticle?

JG52Uther
06-04-2007, 03:55 PM
Love this campaign FSM! I have converted it into co-ops for the squad to play, and it seriously rocks!

FlatSpinMan
06-04-2007, 04:24 PM
JG52 Uther - could you send me some of the converted ones? I know a few people who would like to try them out. May even add them to the download page.

Haigotron - never thought about it but I guess I mean when the reticle is fully (or almost) visible. It took me a very short time to get used to it.

JG52Uther
06-05-2007, 04:15 AM
I could FSM,but it is really easy to convert them.Just copy the Afrika folder into your coop folder, open each mission in turn in the full mission builder, click on the plane (in this case E7B),and remove the tick from plane 1 (the player aircraft).Thats it,done.Instant coops.

Thanks Uther - was at work all day and just saw your PM before this. Never knew it was that easy. I guess you'd have to change the briefings and stuff too for both teams, yeah? Anyway, now that I know that I might add it into any future campaigns I make. Did you have to change teh waypoints around much? I know that for some missions I have the RAF on really odd routes so that they arrive at an inconvenient time for the player. Anyway, ta for the tip and glad they're fun online, too.

JG52Uther
06-05-2007, 08:35 AM
Well if you wanted to do it properly then yes the briefings would be changed. But for quick coops, just remove the tick and go!

Really enjoying is Flatspinman, excellent job!

If I can offer my personal critique.

I think it could be cut down a bit, especially the 'training' missions early on. As we have been flying the sim for a long time, I found these missions a bit 'hmmm, OK that was a bit boring'. I was itching to get into the well scripted missions later on.

I did enjoy the 'Shoot down the smugglers' missions however.

Just a personal point of view, ignore or take on board, totally up to you. I may be on my own here, and if most other people enjoy these missions then of course - take no notice.

I like Icefire's approach, which is - less quantity, more action packed into the campaign.

Please take this as only constructive criticism.

Loving it!

I'm only into the second mission, and enjoying it a lot. I usually don't fly blue, but I figure what the heck? The briefings are well written, I actually read the whole thing, just for the immersion factor.

On mission 2 did those Blenheims have Finnish camo?

JG52Uther

They do obviously add immersion if you can 'get into it' so to speak, but I was dying to shoot down some enemy planes in my biplane fighter! The early missions just seemed like an annoyance to get out of the way.

Just constructive personal critisizm.

Hi again,
Ciapka - as Uther said, that was a mistake in my original upload. I have uploaded a new version with the needed Blenheim skin. If you want, I can email it to you. It will be used in a few missions and looks much better.

Xiolablu - absolutely no offence taken, man. You do know that you're flying my Legion Kondor campaign, not my Afrika one, right? Kondor starts in 1937 and goes to Spain. The player is supposed to be a brand new pilot. Afrika starts in 1941 after Spain, BOB and France(not made) so it doesn't have the training missions.
Glad you like the briefings and so on. Things pick up in Spain in terms of action but if you get tired of waiting just try Afrika or BOB. Both available at M4T.

Please take this as only constructive criticism: I flew (mission No 20 I think) yesterday, and realized there was not much Flak at the "blue" base.
I quite understand that the Flak (and desert camo paint) was missing at the beginning since the Germans hastily arrived to help their Italian friends, but then after a few weeks shouldn't they have "fixed" the lack of Flak ?
Could you also tell me (us) what plane does the P40 with a Russian name added correspond to in the .mis files, are they Hawks or what, cause I can't find them in my skin folder.
Thanx in advance

Ahh - just worked out what you meant. This one, right?
Class air.P_40SUKAISVOLOCH2A

I have no idea what that means.

I'll play the mission and see what comes up. I don't recall placing a Russian bird in there and can't see why I would have. It may be a remnant from an earlier discarded/altered mission I made on that template. Hang on a sec!

FlatSpinMan
06-06-2007, 07:32 AM
Well a quick investiagtion reveals that the label: Class air.P_40SUKAISVOLOCH2A is how the FMB names the TomahawkIIa. I checked one other .mis file and found the same plus the pilot skins match those set for the Tomahawk in the mission.
Then I googled and found this thread at jg1 forums. It seems they just use that name to refer to the Tomahawks though apparently (I don't know any Russian) it has no connection with the English name.

@Hkuusela - all working now? Hope so.

Then I googled and found this thread at jg1 forums. It seems they just use that name to refer to the Tomahawks though apparently (I don't know any Russian) it has no connection with the English name.

Thanx FSM, I also found this explanation for those "funny" names :

If you have FB installed into one folder, and 1946 installed into another folder, I think to keep your campaign progress you'd have to at least copy over your entire "users" folder from the FB installation.

But I would worry there would be some kind of version conflict at some point. I'd just do what you already have: install the campaign into the 1946 folder, and restart it from the beginning.

As ever, MrMojok sounds on the mark. I haven't tried it but it can't be that hard. If it all goes to custard you can quickly get back to where you were by hitting fly, spawning in and the escaping and clicking 'refly'.
Happy trails.

Thanks guys! I'm off to such a good start the second time, that I don't want to start from where I ended the first time. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Just curious...
