Hi, I'm a newbie and would appreciate some help with this.

I have installed URU successfully on this machine in the past when it was running Windows 2000 -- now it's Windows XP. I have followed all (I think) of Heimdall G's advice on installing with XP, including Setting Virtual Memory Paging File Size (which is the error message I get).

Following is my DxDiag Report. Please let me know if there is anything else I may provide.

Thank you,
Christy

Hi. You really don't have enough RAM for URU and it looks like your pagefile is too big for what you have. MS's recommendation is 2 * system RAM (eg 256 = 512, 512 = 1024). Set initial and max to be the same.

Another 256 Mb RAM will make a huge difference, and 1 GB total (with the correspondingly resized pagefile) will work best of all.

Thanks for the quick response.

I doubled my RAM when I went to XP, <STRIKE>having played URU on Windows ME with RAM of 128</STRIKE>.

I'm happy to buy additional RAM, but this makes me wonder if there's something else I'm missing.

If anyone sees anything else, I'd appreciate hearing about it. If this is definitely it-and-only-it (I'm a poor student) then I'll just grow up and buy more RAM.

Thank you!

Christy

Your maximum virtual memory paging file size is currently 636 MB. You should have set both the Initial size and Maximum size of your paging file to 512 MB, as detailed under "Setting Virtual Memory Paging File Size" in Uru: Changing Game and System Settings With Win XP (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/524109302/m/182100665).

Questions:

1. What is the *exact* paging file size error message you get? And at what point in Uru do you get it?

2. Since you have so little RAM, have you tried closing all unnecessary background applications and processes before starting Uru, as detailed under "Closing Background Applications and Processes" in Uru: Changing Game and System Settings With Win XP (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/524109302/m/182100665)?

<span class="ev_code_BLUE"> Items in blue are corrections</span>

I did set both to 512 per your instructions in the article mentioned before this most recent install attempt.

I start the installation, and a few hours later, at the very end, I get a message as it is decompressing that
<span class="ev_code_BLUE">- Virtual Memory Minimum is Too Low
- Your system is low on virtual memory
- Windows is increasing the size of your virtual Paging File
- During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied
</span>
I click Ok, and it takes me back to the desktop, new icons included. Note: it never asks me to enroll in URU Live, if that is still an expected prompt.

It occurs to me that I must have already had 256 MB of RAM to have played the game in the past. So when I installed more about a year ago, perhaps I now have 512 but didn't install it properly? Or didn't notify the CPU of the addition?

As you can tell, both very ignorant and grateful for the help.

Would it be helpful to post the install log?

Christy

Regarding installation, knowing there was errors, I tried double-clicking to see if I could play. It opens the URU dialog box, I select to play, it thinks for a minute, then quits.

Christy, who's a little fragmented today

Some progress, but not there yet.

I uninstalled, closed background applications, and attempted to install again. This time there was no Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low message, but it said there were errors with the install (as it had all the other times).

When I tried to play, I got further -- able to name a character and then it freezes at the Single Player Setup - Set Progress - File Progress when the bar looks completely blue.

I tried to play once before and once after restarting. The first closed the application after 3-4 min on the Set Progress procedure, and the second gave me the Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low message after 3-4 min, and when I hit Ok, it closed the application.

So progress, but still not running.

Grateful for any more assistance.

Uru installation should take something like 15-20 minutes maximum, NOT a few hours!

Before proceeding to the suggestions below:

-- 1. Carry out steps 1 through 5 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up in Uru: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/524109302/m/356106565).

-- 2. Make certain that the Uru disc is free of smudges, fingerprints, any sort of haze, etc. Don't just look at the disc and say "yeah, clean". Actually clean it using either water-clear (additive-free, no witch hazel or whatever, no green color) rubbing alcohol or a warm mild detergent solution. Dry with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth (not paper towels or tissue paper) using a center-outward motion, not circular around the disc. Remove any deep scratches on the disc using one of the repair kits available on-line or at CompUSA, Best Buy, Circuit City, et al.

Also, the laser lenses in your disc drive can build up a haze coating over time which fouls up drive read operation, particularly if:
-- You live in a dusty area.
-- There's a smoker in the house.
-- You don't have a vent hood over your kitchen stove or cooktop.
-- You use burning-candle or plugin (oil-dispersing) room deodorizers.

Using a CD laser lens cleaning disc can help. This is essentially a CD with tiny brushes on it that take the haze off of the lenses. The best ones (especially for smokers, non-hooders, and candle burners/oilers) come with a cleaning solution used to wet the brushes, but this isn't a strict requirement. Run the cleaning cycle at least 3 times in succession, as a first pass.

Suggestions, to do in the order shown:

1, Reset both the Initial size and Maximum size of your virtual memory paging file to 1024 MB *exactly* as detailed in Uru: Changing Game and System Settings With Win XP (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/524109302/m/182100665). Re-run DxDiag and look under System Information. You should see "Page File: xxxMB used, 1024MB available". Then install Uru from a clean boot, as detailed under Installing and Re-Installing Uru, "5. Installing Original Uru: Ages Beyond Myst" in Uru: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/524109302/m/356106565).

2. Download and re-install NVIDIA's version 45.23 video driver *exactly* as detailed under Installing NVIDIA Drivers in Uru: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/524109302/m/539102665). Be certain to download and re-install DirectX 9.0c as part of the driver installation process. Then try installing Uru from a clean boot.

3. Install the latest audio driver from Dell for your Sound Blaster Live!. Dell drivers and downloads are available starting here (http://support.dell.com/?%7Eck=mn) under Popular Support Tools. Then try installing Uru from a clean boot.

4. If you did install more RAM for a total of 512 MB and it's not showing up in your DxDiag report, there's most likely a problem with either your motherboard or the new memory stick. But maybe you originally had 128 MB and installed a second 128 MB memory stick?

To confirm what DxDiag shows, try downloading and running the Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html) (free download). Your installed RAM should be detailed under Memory Modules near the top of the right-hand column of results.

If Belarc also shows 256 MB of RAM and you really did install a second 256 MB memory stick, try opening your PC's case and removing the memory sticks from their sockets, then re-installing them. In the order shown:
-- 1. Turn off the PC and all devices attached to it.
-- 2. Disconnect all devices connected to the PC, including the monitor, printer, etc., from their electrical outlets. Also disconnect any telephone lines or network cables from the PC.
-- 3. Disconnect the power cord from the PC or at least from the wall socket, and then press the power button to ground the motherboard.
-- 4. Ground yourself by touching unpainted metal at the back of the PC, before touching anything inside it. While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface on the computer to ground any static electricity that might build up. Static electricity can completely trash a PC!

Then, remove the memory sticks and switch their socket locations. (You should have two memoty sockets.) When you re-install the sticks, make certain that:
-- The notches (cutouts) on the pin-side of the stick line up with the keys (crossbars) in the central groove of the socket.
-- Each stick is bottomed out in the socket.
-- The locking tabs (clips) at each end of the socket are fully engaged with the cutouts on the stick. You should feel/hear the clips snap into the cutouts when the stick bottoms out in the socket.

Reconnect everything and restart the PC. If you get no memory errors during bootup, run Belarc again.

If Belarc now shows 512 MB, all is good. If not, check your RAM for errors using a utility like Memtest86 (free), available here (http://www.memtest86.com/#download0). Click on 'Download - Pre-Compiled Memtest86 v3.2 installable from Windows and DOS' under 'Memtest86 3.2 Release (11/Nov/2004)'. If Memtest indicates problems, go to your system BIOS's Advanced page and load the memory-related defaults, if any. Then try Memtest again. If you still get errors, you've got bad RAM.

Replace the bad RAM stick, and run Belarc again. If you still don't see 512 MB, you've probably got a motherboard problem.

Thank you very much.

On a side note, even successful installations in the past have taken a few hours. I don't know why -- everything else (other games) installs pretty quickly.

I completed step 1...

-- 1. Carry out steps 1 through 5 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up in Uru: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.

before the last 2 install attempts.

I am proceeding to step 2 and the rest.

I did run Belarc to see what it said and think that might have found part of the problem...

Memory Modules c,d
256 Megabytes Installed Memory
Slot 'DIMM1' has 256 MB
Slot 'DIMM2' is Empty

I put the second 256 in the slot right next to the first. So I must have made an error there.

Nevertheless, I am proceeding through your instructions and will notify you when done with the results.

I am so grateful, thank you.

Christy

Heimdall_G

If your motherboard only has two memory slots, you couldn't have put the second memory stick in the wrong slot. The stick in Slot 'DIMM2' isn't being recognized for some reason, likely because it's not inserted correctly in the slot. I'd recommend that you do suggestion 4 as soon as you can.

Also, it's possible that you got the wrong memory for your PC - there are lots of different flavours that all look alike. Did you check the Dell website for specifications before you bought the new stick? And have you looked at the settings in your system BIOS to be certain that they're correct with regard to memory?

"...it's possible that you got the wrong memory for your PC - there are lots of different flavours that all look alike. Did you check the Dell website for specifications before you bought the new stick?"

(embarrassed) No. I was at a computer store helping my mother (what little I could) put together a computer for herself and the salesperson handed me something he said would work for my computer. Are you laughing yourself sick? I wouldn't blame you. You could even be pointing with the laughing. I will check out the Dell website for compatable stick info.

"And have you looked at the settings in your system BIOS to be certain that they're correct with regard to memory?"

Not familiar with system BIOS -- is that something we've discussed already and I'm missing it?

Thanks.

No-one would laugh at your predicament. I hope it's as simple that your memory isn't seated properly.

I'm slightly surprised that if there is a second memory stick that you've not had the POST (Power On Self Test) beeps go off.

obrienca
05-27-2006, 03:53 PM
Ok, not familiar with the POST test, either.

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Is that something I would run or something the computer does regularly and would alert me?

<span class="ev_code_GREEN">Looking at what POST stands for really kinda answers my question. Please disregard.</span>

Thanks.

Oh, the shame. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The back of my URU disk (which I now remember I loaned to a friend) has many deep scratches.

And you'd think when I installed the additional RAM, I would have noticed it was about 1/2 cm shorter!

You gentlemen have been great. I sincerely appreciate all of your help.

I think I need to just go buy URU: Complete Chronicles and return to the computer store for the right RAM.

I think we've solved it.

Thanks again,

Christy
