Just thinking how great it would be to have a WW-1 flight sim with Sopwith's, Fokker‚‚ā¨ôs, Spad‚‚ā¨ôs, Zeppelin and Gotha bombers, Albatross‚‚ā¨ôs, Nieuport‚‚ā¨ôs, Flying Circuses.. etc all flying over the trenches, with rotary engines streaming burnt castor oil or the sound of a purring Mercedes on a D-VII. Picture a intense dogfight with Lewis‚‚ā¨ôs, Vickers or Spandau machine gun bullets ripping through wood or fabric coverings ‚‚ā¨¬¶. all done to the elegant software level of PF or BoB!

Just a thought. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Believe me, it's been thought about...and I for one would fly little else if a new one were made today. But Oleg's already said it's not going to happen - mostly because of the lack of resources out there, ie: not many WWI planes still flying.

Still, I remember my Red Baron days fondly. Some oldtimer actually test flew the original RB game and said the handling characteristics were pretty close to dead-on. But that would mean anything done today would be a copy of a copy.

Eventually, somebody might pick up the project again, but I think Oleg's too much of a perfectionist to do it himself.

Also, you have to consider that WWI flight sim is even MORE of a niche than WWII...many less interested = less profitability.

Take Red Baron 3D physics and add new graphic.I would buy it,ultra realistic or not,it is a fun WW1 sim.

I miss a WW1 sim but as said, it is definately a niche within a niche market. The only way a company could turn a profit from it is if they don't sell it for the standard $40 new game cost. Instead they would have to sell it for $60-70. I would gladly buy it though. I miss my Fokker Dr.I http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

I agree with some of the comments stated .... However, there are loads of information on WW-1 aircraft with all types of flight dynamics listed.

In Rhinebeck NY at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, they fly reproduction aircraft and some original with rotary engines and a D-VII with a Mercedes that actually flew in WW-1 ‚‚ā¨¬¶. They are perfectionist there and have a great database.

http://www.oldrhinebeck.org/

I do miss Red Baron; will not load with WinXP on my machine. Did find some WW-l planes an a add-on to CFS2 by Just Flight with WW-1 airplane.

Just thought it would be cool. Thanks for dreaming with me boy's‚‚ā¨¬¶‚‚ā¨¬¶.

There is a WWI combat flight sim under development right now. It is an addon for CFS3. It looks like it will be free. Go to Simouthouse CFS3 forum and look at posts by Winding Man. Some of the screenshots look very promising. WWI planes plus scenery to match the times, including trenches and possibly soldiers within the trenches. Even saw speculation that they may try to have soldiers in mass attacking trenches. If you have a powerful system and are willing to do alot of third party addon downloads as well as some manual file modification, CFS3 can look good. Yes, CFS3 out of the box is a big pile of **** but the third parties have used the open code in the game to make the game good. So, if you are really wanting a WWI sim take a look at this.

Indeed, a WW1 sim by Oleg would be a welcome sight http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif my fondest memories of simming are with the original Red Baron. Use to play it for hours on end. Creating a WWI sequel to the IL2 series (or shall i say prequel http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ) would really be an icing on the cake.

I'm surprised no one remembers the failed attempt by the community to insert a WWI 'mod' into the Il-2 series (original Il-2 I believe). Oleg said he would do it, if 'we' were able to get enough aircraft together to make it worthwhile, however there just wasn't enough support, the few modelers that volunteered were swamped with workload (they stuff they did put together was excellent though, external models mostly, if memory serves). I believe they were shooting for both western and eastern fronts

Invent some bogus flight models and call the game..."STOP THE PIGEON!"

I'd buy it... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Ah, how I long for a WWI flight sim. I remember how much fun and how immersive Red Baron was back then.

But it seem that you can't go back. After playing the IL2 series those old games don't have the same magic that they once did.

Although it would be a very limited market, I like to think that a well done WWI flight sim could do well. Here's another thought, If Oleg did one I konw atleast 85-90% of use who have played the Il2 Series would buy it.

I might just have to install Red Baron 3d and give it a whirl. I haven't touched it in probably 6 years. I hear there is a 28 dollar fan mod that really improves the graphics. Anyone here played it.

it would be nice to have a brand new and fully dedicated WWI sim...but a handful of Halberstadts and Sopwiths for FB would be ok...the community could do all of the campaigns and make do with existing maps...

WOW is a game now available and the graphcs are Phantastic.
Most can get it for under $20-00 and there is a very active modding community underway as we speak.
Me too i loved Red Baron but it got so over oatched and modified i can't kee p and Wings of War is fun to play for the kids as well as it has an arcade setting for them as well.
Try it or at least the demo.http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-11/890963/PhantomSignature3.JPG

Hang about - look at those engines! Every one of them has radial cylinders, but the exhausts of an inline engine... is this some strange composite? The one at the back has a radiator, starting handle, what looks like a flat-6 or v-6 inline engine, and a 5- or 7-cylinder radial engine on the back... driving a propellor smaller than the engine flywheel... aarghh. They should've asked me to design their aircraft...

Rgr, I've played it and it's awesome! Not only graphics but sound enhanced as well. Highly recommend it if you reload the game. Actual Landsat photos are used in reconstructing the French countryside. Not as good as IL2 family, but better than Warbirds' 3D rendering.

What problems are you having? I can run it (and still do from time to time) on XP Home. The only trouble I have is the USB Joystick bug which shrinks the window and kills sound. You can get around this 2 ways: unplug your USB joystick befor launching the game, then plug it back in when you hear the music; the second is a small program that makes it work, but you have to reset your preferences each time.
If this is the problem let me know. If not, I can probably put you in touch with some folks from my old RB3D squad that can help.

Am I the only one who remembers Flying Corps (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=2922)?

I've considered making a Windows98 partition just to run it, but I <i>really</i> don't like that OS...

VF51_Flatspin,

In the Full Canvas Jacket patch (the infamous 28 dollar add-on) there is a checkbox for eliminating the USB problem and sound problem under XP if you launch the game from his Control Panel.

Runs great under my XP Pro.

Aha! There you have it! I got it when it was the free "Promised Land" patch and this option was not avail then. I assume there are even more updates for the Full Canvas Jacket.
