Combat aircraft of Russia€€s Baltic Fleet were rushed to the Lithuanian border on Wednesday to repel a possible violation by what turned out to be an unnaturally thick and fast moving cloud, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported citing the Baltic Fleet€€s press service.

The press service said that a Su-27 fighter was ordered into the air near Russia€€s Baltic Sea enclave of Kaliningrad after radar spotted a light plane entering Russian airspace from Lithuania. However, the plane found nothing after reaching the border area.

The Baltic Fleet€€s air defense command post, military officials and Lithuania and Poland later revealed the intruder was actually a thick cloud that was being driven by a strong wind.

€œ€œOur fighter approached the trespasser to make it land or leave Russian air space€€, the press service said. €œ€œA closer examination showed that there was a cloud instead of a light plane and it was coming from the territory of Lithuania,€€ the Baltic Fleet€€s spokesman said.

The Associated Press news agency cited Lithuanian military spokesperson Ricardas Uzelka as saying on Wednesday that Lithuanian authorities had no knowledge of any incident on the border. €œ€œNo Russian planes entered Lithuanian territory, nor did any Lithuanian planes enter Kaliningrad air space,€€ Uzelka said.

I have read that we came close to ordering a strategic nuclear response when our Ballistic Early Warning radars detected thousands of Russian missiles coming over the horizon (this was around 1960 !!). They attacked us again the next day, and each day after, one hour later each day, about the time of local moonrise. It took the US Air Force a few days reeling under this massive Soviet assault to program the radars and/or operators to ignore the moon. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
