View Full Version : Search lights! Finally!

After playing FB since its very beginning, I could finally see those famous search lights! It was in russian campaign, Leningrad map, flying a Hurricane IIc...Mission was CAP over a city island near Leningrad, almost at night...It sure was beautifull, how the lights locked on enemy fighters (G50s and Hurricanes I) and all the AAA blazing in all directions! Oaaah! It almost seemed real...it reminded me a little bit those CNN images of Baghdad during the first Gulf war, with the bullet streams going up from the AAA guns...incredible...Now, I should have taken some pics of it to post...maybe next time I get that kind of mission...

Isn't there some way to make a mission using FME to include searchlights? If so, you could make a "quickie" FME and get some pix that way. I'd like to see them!

I couldn't wait either so i created a full mission with a few in

wish i hadn't now cause i knew exactly what was coming when i flew the mission (duh!- obviously !) and it kinda spoiled them for me (partly due to the fact i set my bombers flying way to high above the searchlights!) /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I´ve never tried to set up a night mission in FMB, as I still don´t know how to manage it properly (yes, I know, it´s a shame /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif )...but in QMB, I´ve never been able to get those search lights, even at night time and attacking airbases...

You never will get searchlights in QMB... believe me, I've tried. I have yet to see them. Guess I should take my own advice and create a mission with 'em. Now if I could only figure out how to take/view/share screenshots!!

Dude, FMB is the hidden core of the game. But it is so hard to use. Interface is poorly done and hides the True Power behind FMB. Its a Conspiracy, I tell you. Nobody listens. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

There is a reason Flanker 1.0 made the mission editor the basic start up screen when you loaded that sim.

XyZspineZyX

I agree on both counts. FMB has more features than you can usually use, and it's difficult and not very user friendly. It's still better than some. Anyone here remember the FMB from Falcon 4.0? Way too detail intensive, although F4 was all about the details.

IMO the FMB isn't that hard to use (well use to a certain level anway). i think it is reasonably easy to grasp the basics and from then onwards it is only a matter of how much patience you have.

maybe it is hard to grasp everything - but then again it depends how much patience youv'e got /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

p.s.
IIRC
searchlights are found in the static objects list box (at bottom) which is selected from the view objects box which you get by selecting view objects from one of the drop down menus ensure time (got by selecting view conditions from drop down menu) is set between around 12.00 -4.00am
to put on map click map and press insert ( like any other object)

I have no problem with the FMB interface, my problem is that it just takes too long to make missions to my satisfaction. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-sad.gif

If you put searchlights in using the FMB, will they automatically activate when enemy planes are nearby? It's true what's been said about FMB, it's not that difficult (sorry I overreacted in my last post), I just have a hard time lining up opposing forces waypoints so that the battles actually happen, instead of planes missing each other. Anyone know how far apart enemies can be and still spot/react to each other? That would help a lot.

as regards planes it is probably best to set a blue way point as close as possible to a red waypoint - then put the green 'set target' target over the waypoint - this will force one side to initiate the engagement (eg if one is a bomber formation.- set fighter target onto bomber waypoint not other way round)) (if both are fighters set the green targets for each planes -red and blue onto each other waypoint - this will guarentee a engagement)

IIRC, AI fighters will spot and engage any enemy aircraft within 7km,

I love FMB, just getting into it. It is well worth the initial hour you need to figure out how to do ANYTHING at all.

No, that wasn't unclear at all, and helps actually. I had no idea you could use the green target to point at an enemies waypoint. Thought you only used those to designate ground targets. Thanks again

Here's a link to info on the FMB:

http://www.il2center.com/technika/

If you put searchlights outside of an airstrip's circle they become neutral and will spot everyone. This makes a freaky dogfight room.

Hey Bun-bun, just a quick question about your whatchamacallit with the picture of the A-10. Do you think LOMAC is going to be as good as IL2FB?

Yeah http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif, if you gave me a good manual that explained it well enough i would understand nuclear physics http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif and the FB manual explains it rather well.

Thanks again Bun-Bun. How big is the airstrips circle? I guess I should go to the mission builders forum, if there is one. Headed there next

Can anyone tell me how´s the feeling of being spotted by a searchlight? How does it look in FB? Are they blinding or something?

Hmm, don't forget to time the planes as close as possible. If one group gets there a few minutes early, then chances are they will miss each other for they will fly off to the next waypoint, before the other group gets there.

Just remember to check the times for the waypoints as you place them. As for distance i have had planes engage at or around 7 or less km. Altitude really doesn't matter either. Higher or lower within reason they will spot each other and engage.

May you not become a dirt torpedo.

Oh yeah, definitely. Have you seen the Su-25 video yet?

- How big is the airstrips circle?

In the FMB, hit the airbase and View Object Properties - the slider adjusts the circle size.

They blind you down low. When I run the night mission on my server we call it the funhouse. Imagine looking for a target with six spotlights covering every direction. And when a spot hits you everyone knows where you are.

If you've never seen the search lights, go to single missions and load the last P47 mission for the Russians (mission N3, I believe). It's the defense of Leningrad at night. You won't be dissapointed!

My first mission in the He-111 campaign was bombing at night and i bombed some flak in a city (loads of searchlights around) My flight flattened the city and I got some of the AAA http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Great stuff!

You guys who have questions about the FMB be sure to check out the Mission Builder forum and this excellent resource:
http://www.il2center.com/technika/builder02.htm

Although it is written for IL-2, it is quite applicable to FB. It is much more step-by-step than the info in the manual.

Cheers,
Mike
