I think the demo is still from the origial IL-2 Sturmovik days ... Forgotten Battles was basically a "do-over" of IL-2 (better graphics, more planes, more maps) so if you go out to get the series get Forgotten Battles.

Let's just put it this way: there are a lot of flyable planes. I wish I had made a list of flyables that were new with each release, but I started out in backwards and made a list of what was included in Pacific Fighters standalone game and then what you'd get as 'new' if you retroactively added the earlier FB and Ace Expansion Pack -- many of the PF planes had been released prior in FB or AEP. Anyhow, I'll replicate my "reverse order" lists so that you'll get the basics of what is available:

Way good dude... Gold is the way to go too. It will give you everything for now.

Just patch up to the latest 4.02 Merged and you're off to the races.

From what I've seen, "Gold" is a hit-or-miss thing to find. I saw a copy at my local EB Games recently though.

There is a thread where Oleg says he is finishing the master for a "Gold" FB+AEP DVD-ROM in addition to the "Platinum" DVD-ROM with FB+AEP+PF.

You may have to ask one of the stores to order it for you if you can't order it online. I would think any decent store would order it for you. Expect to pay the full retail price if you go this route.

slo123

Pacific Fighters is about a year old. Forgotten Battles is older than that. The shelf life of most computer games is considerably shorter than either of those.

I have seen PF in stores like Wal-Mart recently, but I can't recall the last time I saw FB. You might find it on the shelf in any conputer store, or you might not. Its too hard to say with a game this far out of production.

It will probably be $30 or 40 if you have to order it. It will be considerably cheaper if you get lucky and find it on the shelf.

Good luck.

Go to a large computer-only store (my local one is called "Micro center", the il-2 "Gold pack" can be found, which contains both Forgotten battles, and the Ace Expansion Pack, then just buy pacific fighters and install it over the other two games

As I said before, finding FB, AEP or the combined "Gold Pack" in any store is a matter of luck anymore. Over the summer I could usually find one copy of "Gold Pack" in any Hasting's I went into in Montana. Since I returned home to Pennsylvania in August I've only seen one copy of Gold Pack and that was in the EB Games store at my local mall (I live in the middle of rural nowhere) ; oddly enough, an older gentleman grabbed it while I was standing nearby and since then I haven't seen the title restocked at that store.

An online purchase is going to be the easiest route for you at this point, but if your parents can't help you with that then I can only suggest that you attempt to special order at your local software store. EB Games or Gamestop would probably be the best option for that I'd imagine.

Take comfort though, I believe that UbiSoft is about to release the Gold Pack and a Platinum Pack (FB+AEP+PF) on DVD-ROM. No release date has been announced but the developer of the series has been busy finalizing the master for those releases.

If you are still looking for a version of the title that you can play immediately then you might have the best luck with one of two options:

1. IL-2 Sturmovik as a budget-bin jewel-case release; this is the original version of Forgotten Battles and has simpler graphics and only half as many planes as FB. Also, you can't add the AEP or PF titles to it as expansions. You'll only be able to use custom missions and skins specifically created with IL-2; anything written for FB or later probably won't work. I've seen IL-2 at Wal-Mart but it may also be at Office Max, Staples or anyplace else that has a display of $10 "jewel case" games.

2. Pacific Fighters can be installed as a 'stand-alone' game that does not require any other sim to work. The maps and planes are different than IL-2 and FB but several of the US and RAF flyables in PF actually were ported over from FB and AEP anyhow. If you're interested in flying the P-38 Lightning, P-39 Airacobra, P-40 Warhawk, P-47 Thunderbolt, P-51 Mustang, F4U Corsair, F3F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat, Spitfires, Zeroes, B-25, etc. then this is a good option. You can always reinstall PF later as 'merged' if you get FB+AEP. Wal-Mart used to carry it heavily but I've seen PF copies become a rarity also. Warning: some retailers still charge as much as $40 for PF but most stores and online vendors sell it for only $20.

Skycat_2

FB was $40 USD when first released.
AEP was $30 when first released.
PF was $40 when first released.

Given the historical prices set on UbiSoft's new releases in the US, I'm expecting BoB will debut at $40 although I wouldn't be surprised if it is $50 or maybe even more -- Other PC sims/games routinely open at $50 including "Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 3" which came out at the end of 2002, only a few months before FB, and "Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004" which came out in August of 2003.

o ok well does anyone have an idea if it will be mergeable with pf?

Skycat_2
01-05-2006, 09:19 PM
Will PF merge to BoB? Not likely. BoB is supposed to start a new line with modular expansions.
(It's unclear to me how the expansions will work though. From what I remember from Oleg's early explanations, you don't have to collect every expansion as they come out and install them in order like with IL-2. Perhaps each will be a mergable standalone?)

I believe the Grand Plan of BoB is to finish its series of expansions with the Eastern Front, where IL-2 began.
