View Full Version : Merchant Visability?

I have notice that with GWX merchants are able to spot me at 8000 meters. This equals to 4.9 miles. As soon as my Watch Officer spots the ship my stealth goes red. Switching to F6 I notice that the enemy ship is doing manuvers to avoid me. Lets think this one out. At 4.9 miles/8000 meters I feel its very unlikely that a lookout on a merchant vessel could Identify a "submarine". Any comments on this issue, I might be wrong. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif

well, I dont know about that I once surfaced about 320m from an enemy merchant, and he didn't have the haziest idea I was there.... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Is this at night or day. On nights i can get real close to merchants without them seeing me can remember a specific distance.

Perhaps during the day they might, got some very big binoculars on surface ships! However this raises another question i would like answered, does the moon affect the targets aility to see you?

Come to think of it i haven't even noticed if the moon changes in the game, i really should be paying more attention!

I don't think that they modeled the moon and sun as a variable in regards to delectability. I've set up my attack positions so that my periscope would be facing away from a sunrise/sunset. That would make an enemy vessel stare into the sun in order to spot me, but in reality it has no effect. They have, however, modeled the Sea State to be a variable though.

When it's calm (or near calm) you may be more easily spotted while on the surface. But when the weather is normal (i.e. 15km winds), it makes it harder for you to be detected. I think that GWX has changed this with their modeling of the naval ?Bug Eyes?, or navigational binoculars. This gives some of the merchant ships better detection ranges than ever before.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

My approch was calm seas daylight. I never tried the sun at your back approch. I read a thread on crew ratings and adjusted my settings to reflect those for 1939-40. It seems to have helped some. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif
