View Full Version : Big Question...why don't women enjoy flight sims...???

Hi all,

Gloves and Caps off...(Caps = headgear not upper case http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif).

In my experience women do not enjoy or relate to flight sims.

For me il2 has been 'another woman' as far as girlfriends are concerned.

They regard it as a 'threat' for their attention.

But there are real women fighter pilots today. What would their opinions be?

Best Regards,
MB_Avro.

Girls are generally more interested in love, sex and feelings than blasting each other to bits http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Also girls tend to not have as good hand/eye coordination as men.

There are some exceptions, but in general.

WoW is full of women (and guys pretending to be women but thats another story) - I think flight sims are not perceived as "social play" by most people. The women gamers I've known tend to enjoy games with a strong social aspect - online card games especially poker, MMORPG's (WoW, LOTR online, 2nd life) and social games like the sims (bleck!) - if we could convince them to give squads a try that might bring some in. It seems that mostly its the men who like to cave away alone with their toys - women want to group together and play imho. (my wife is a suduko nut so there are obviously exceptions to the social rule)

MB Avro Uk`s fishing abit LEBillfish, as he has been doing of late.

But of course it`s true that men are more into such games than women. Even those women who fly real jets probably do it more for the job than for the reasons men really do it.

There`s no mystery. Men are into fighting things of all kinds, with some it`s infantry, others subs, still other themes as long as it entails warfare.

We are bred to it and are part of it, no matter how much we think we are not. There`s a violent person in every man (some of us hide from it, others revel in it) and in games allow us to express it in a manner that harms no one but keeps us feeling like men!

For the young ones it`s part training, like cubs play-fighting, for the older ones among us, it allows us to catch that feel of being Men of ages past.

We all want to be the ancient warrior, better, stronger and ultimately more alluring to the females than everyone else.

The ladies, well they do it cos they can, but not for the same reasons.

There are two fightin' wimmins who use this sim, and who knows how many snakes in the grass blowing males to pieces without revealing they's wimmins. As Billfish noted a while ago, there is a lot of gaff women have to stand online, not very pretty, and not very flattering to the males involved. This could keep women from publicly revealing their gender or even playing. I know a lot of women who are superb gamesters, athletes, or fighters. Sometimes all three. Even women who appear sheep-like can be ferocious gamers. Maybe the question should be, why is it males who like combat flight sims get as primitive as the males at the 1991 Tailhook Convention?! Ha! What is it about combat and airplanes? Does it increase the testosterone count?!!!!!!!!

A couple females I've known that flew IL2 would make short work of a comment like that. Sadly, those types of comments are exactly why you don't see many women involved. Unless they hide their true identities.

Well, I can only comment on only one woman in particular, that being my wife. She actually tried the game, but couldn't get into it. I think really had nothing to do with gender at all, just a matter of preference. She was actually having a good time with it, except that she couldn't score any kills. I think if she was able to smoke a bogey after a hair-raising dogfight she would be hooked. But, she didn't seem to want to invest a lot of time into it. She prefers playing The Sims, or the occasional RPG. She used to have these marathon sessions with Icewind Dale II. And she plays Xbox games like Gun, Need for Speed, Mercenaries, and GTA3. Plenty of hand-eye coordination for some of those Xbox games.

Last time my wife played Il2 she hopped into the pilots seat while I was doing something for our son. She was just starting to get the hang of banking and turning and when someone in a zero blew the wing off her hurricane (I was online in Zeek vs Wildcats at the time). She's never tried flying again. Spoilt what could have been a fun passtime for her. Oh well

On the other hand she quite enjoys co-op shoot em ups on the playstation. Its how we spend a bit of quality time when the boys are in bed.

I think that she probably would enjoy IL2 if we had another PC so we could co-op.

Actually it's a simple thing....From youth all people are programmed to like or dislike this or that simply by the handed down lessons that their elders learned.

Take spinach, liver, heart as foods for example. Peers without ever trying them say yuck, because they've seen adults who have never say yuck, and get it so engrained that if they ever do try it, they "taste yuck". So, males are taught you like this yet don't that, females the same, and soon enough even if you do try to cross the line it really isn't that pleasent.....The lines are blurring more though every day, and actually makes for some troublesome opponents as genders do approach problems differently. So the skills that serve you against other males may fail your terribly against females. In kind as far as aggressive qualities, either you're all monks or never been on a date as if you had you'd realize women are 100x more vicious and brutal then men...They're just more devious about it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

However, be it either due to being raised different, or having the curiousity or courage to cross boundries to try things, or the natural instincts/desire that draw you toward another genders ways of being....There are many who do cross the line, and as rediculous as it is gets hassled for it (you can't believe how upset some guys get when I shoot them down).

Frankly, and call me "Butch", yet after 4 years of forum discussions either I'm overly masculine or MANY of you excessively effeminate on many paths.....I'm voting for the latter.

Naturally this post would not be complete without the obligatory response to the trolls, so here goes.

Come fly against me online, bring a pretty dress to wear home after I shoot ya down. Cya in HL http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I have to agree with most of that. The man bashing in society these days is getting really tiresome. But there are times when some dude's behavior online crosses the line from macho to a-hole.

Saying that men's attraction to flight sims is purely combat, competition, or violence based doesn't hold water since it seems like there are just as few women in the civil flight sim community. Maybe flight simming isn't social enough like some others have said. Why do fewer women than men play sports, ride motorcycles, race cars, etc? Maybe a lot of them just don't derive the same gratification from physical activity.

The one thing I have to say is I get tired of being called immature by women because I enjoy playing flight sims. Maybe more women should try playing video games; it might get them to lighten up a bit.

I have found that generally women tend to be less inclined to gaming period... and when they are things like flight sims are not usually what they chose.. although I have known a few lady simmers in my day.... One thing I can say.. most of the ones I know of and knew of were pretty good.... Our very own LeB comes to mind and one CS_Crimson from CFS1. In fact Crimson was the first person I ever heard use the term HOTAS in relation to flight sims. She was pretty good... there were a few others but their names escape me.

Flight sims.. especially one as complex as this one will not appeal to everyone. I know guys who will play 2K football, Warcraft or any FPS till the cows come home.... put em in here? They punk out in a week. I must have bought at least 4 copies of 46 alone trying to turn guys I know on to this sim.. and they just can't cut it. It isn't all about skill either.... You have to have a willingness to invest the time and $$$ to become proficient... and a lot of folks just aren't down. My daughter in law will kick your tail in MK or SC.... but get her in here.... bored stiff in 10...

I think the correlation between vainglory, acting like a ballocky boy and airplanes is interesting, and that it even crosses over into virtual flying, but this should not be unusual because online wargaming, period, brings this out, thus, it is the genre. The age of these males seems to have nothing to do with it either. There are women gamers out there, and not just stuff like SIMS. I taught an artist girlfriend a manual boardgame years ago. I thought I'd have to go easy on her. She took off, and from turn one onward proceeded to take the offensive, and, in the end, beat me. "That was easy" she declared and never played again. I know five sisters who play strategic warfare games who are lethal in the extreme. Each one is a Machiavelli ready to make a treaty with you and cut your throat ten turns down the line.

We are men. We are about war...and this is about as close as we can get. If we were tribal potentates from the bronze era, the third thing on our list of priorities for 95% of us would be about expansion at the cost of our neighbors.

In these days of pacified namby-pambyism the bravest play heavy contact sports.

What happened to the good old days when you could invade or bomb your neighbor without being scolded or threatened with sanctions by a flaccid UN?

the majority of my friends (man and woman) thinks that ww2 flight sims (especially this one) is boring and they think im nuts to just like old ww2 planes or (sorry about the word) ****ty prop planes like they say...in fact they are used to see modern planes and some dont have a 1% of clue of what ww2 was about...some dont even know what nations was in the conflict.

yes, womans usually dont like these type of games, but you cant generalize.

I agree with Grand_Armee, nothing more therapeutic than a good smash even if virtual. Cuts the mustard, and sets you up for the day. Men are designed for fighting, and are probably at their worst sitting around without some great, bold, dangerous project in the offing. Deprived of such projects they get like a room full of unfed king-size wolverines with hydophobia. Luckily they can be temporily pacified and distracted by sport, culture, business, hobbies, sex, and video games or we would be at each other's necks 99% of the time.

Women? I often suspect it ain't all nurturing and babies with them. I have a writer friend who has dreams about war daggers. Big Scots girl. Never know what's going on in their brains.

Currently watching Rome Series II and it seems that most of the trouble befalling the ancient world was weaved into being by the hand of Eve. Mark Anthony wants to retire to Macedonia but his mistress doesn't think the local amenities are up to much so it's civil war because of shopping. Sevillia cleaved the Roman world in two because Caesar dumped her. Don't even get me started on Cleopatra who is clearly completely off her head.

I'd tried getting my wife into it; she really liked the graphics, enjoyed flying around and looking at the scenery. Then she said "why do you have to go around shooting people down and killing them- even if its just pretend?" I told her that was part of history- that it is to be enjoyed for what it is- a simulation of what it was like to go up and hopfully not get shot down yourself.

Then she said "why don't they make a gardening sim?" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif (she's into gardening obviously)

Yeah, ROME puts it all in context: Pullo and Vorenus, the happy warriors, Atia and Servilia, the b---hgoddesses, Cleopatra, Britney in antiquity, Octavia, daft, impressionable, professionally a victim, and a duke's mixture of rising and falling ambitious males ready to betray their own grandmothers for power. Same group you'd find in any big power center today. Women don't play flight sims because they are too busy plotting and scheming.

Hi all,

Let's take this a bit further...

How many women do you know or knew who made plastic kits of aircraft (Airfix etc.) ??

I would suggest that maybe 80% or more of us on this forum have made such kits ?

And how many women have you met who can quote the mainplayers in WW2? Or even know that it was between 1939 and 1945?

But i did meet a 17 tear old girl back in 1989 who could talk for hours and hours about the T-34 and it's strategic impact upon WW2...

That's an interesting question, Avro. When I was about seven in 1959, I met a girl who built plastic airplane models. She was probably about thirteen. One of the top aircraft modelers in the USA about seventeen years ago was female, but she died. The fact of the matter is that female airplane modelers are, in my experience, as rare as hens' teeth. Female modelers of any kind, in my experience, are as rare as hens' teeth.

Now this is a very important fact. Some feminists and historians would have us believe that women had literally no part in the affairs of Men and government, but from what i`ve read and can deduce, I believe they had a far greater role in the ancient days than we believe.

Many women (wives, princess`, concubines, etc) almost literally ruled from behind the back of the male. Sure male society did not put their names up for glory or good achievements, but neither were their names put up when things went horribly wrong or for evil acts.

It would be unwise to say that men had total control in the ancient days.

As for how much women know about men things like military matters well I find it no surprise. My own daughter can out talk anyone in class about most WWII miltary stuff. She even jnew what a revolver was compared to an M16 rifle. She told me that one boy said he`d never met a girl that knew so much about army things.

If girls know so much, it`s likely that a Man in there somewhere taught her. It still doesn`t mean, though, that she has the same male need to show knowledge on warfare or to challenge for the sake of the male need to fight or feel like he`s in a fight.

What gives the man his advantage in military matters, as well as disadvantage, is his need to face down another and be victorious over him whether in a large or small way.

Man`s natural innate aggression is his advantage in war and curse in civilisation.

Good Evening leitmotiv,

Yes, the more I probe women the less I understand them. They are not men wearing women's bodies. Their brains are not the same as the brain of a man.

Reverse parking is easy for a woman but a trial for a man...

And how many women have 'collections'? We all here of course have collections of varied body parts, some 'obtained' from unofficial sources but in the main we recognise fan clubs and the opportunity to buy or swap a vital organ or two....

I hope this helps.

Absolutely, SeaFire. Diarists and journalists in London in WWI wrote that more policy was made at dinner parties than at Cabinet meetings or at meetings of the Imperial General Staff, and it disgusted them to no end. They thought the women who were the leading lights of the social scene wielded enormous power. And, then there was PM Asquith who was smitten with young woman who was his soulmate with whom he confided everything. The power behind the throne. I had a history prof who maintained the women had more power than their husbands or lovers because they were behind the scenes, out of the public eye, and had more freedom to maneuver. This certainly is the theme of Robert Graves' I, CLAUDIUS and CLAUDIUS THE GOD. Livia has far more power than her dopey husband, the Emperor. A friend of mine correctly called Hillary Clinton "Livia" because she ruled behind the throne, especially after Monica. If she gets to be President, she is likely to discover that her power will be circumscribed, and Bill's will be increased. This may result in gnashing of teeth.

Back to the hand eye coordination thing.

A co-worker of mine, his wife, and myself have gone shooting pistolas together a bit. My co-worker and I tend to actually sight our pistols at the target when firing. We are fairly accurate but not outstanding.

His wife on the other hand, armed with a 9mm Lady Smith, is a terrific point-and-shooter. She knows what gun sights are for and how to use them, but for close range pistol work she really doesn't need them. It's basically "my gun is pointing there, and the bullet will hit there". She is fast and accurate. More accurate than her husband, which frustrates him once and a while. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

However, she doesn't really care about the mechanics or the history of guns. She's just really good at shooting them. (Shotguns, too.) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I think attitudes are starting to change. Women my age grew up trying to steal the Nintendo (original) controller from the crowd of guys trying to play video games so there are more and more women gamers out there. Their approach to gaming tends to be more socially oriented (thus the reason why WoW and The Sims tend to do so well with women) but given that Flight Sims do tend to focus allot on the social/teamwork aspect I think there will be more of a draw for women gamers as it becomes more accepted/accessible.

I do spend a fair bit of time reading about learning and functioning between men and women. Women would love to and do tell men that their better at everything and vice versa that we tend to say that we've got better hand eye co-ordination and all that sort of thing. The research tends to show that while there are some differences...particularly to how problems are approached and resolved...both men and women are just as potentially capable. Sometimes our male single mindedness and direct aggression can be a potent weapon but so can women's general ability to multitask better and focus more on a group rather than an individual (could be talking about a team or about a potential swarm of targets).

Some of it has to be the traditional gender roles at work. I know some women break those roles...get involved with something like this...and their just as good at it!

IceFire is right. Those Machiavellian five sisters I mentioned earlier are a team. They will each take a different country, but they will not infringe on each other. They will destroy every non-sister around them. In the end, the five sisters rule the world. They love to play males because males always go for absolute victory alone. A male may form a temporary alliance with one of the sisters against another sister, and the sister with whom he has the alliance will betray him, and destroy him! It's fascinating to watch.

Avro, knowing the women I know in the USA, they do not have time for gaming. Most of them are driven way more than most men. Someone here must understand 'natural progression' http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
When boys are young they always had a joystick in their hands. Girls were deprived of this joy, which redirected their joys elsewhere.
Now as boys became men they made machines that made playing with a joystick more enjoyable - the called it and aeroplane. And as the the aeroplane advanced it became a weapon.

As you can see women didn't have this joystick to start with thus they were not programmed to enjoy it, where men are and hence more advanced in this type of joystick enjoyment.

But as we know it's very easy for women to obtain their own enjoyment from whatever joystick they prefer, whereas men are restricted to their own. We'll keep 'batting' for the one side only as I have no likes for the other side's batsmen.

Now, lets see if you can figure out why you don't know nor will ever get it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Isn't this what always happens when people are griping about men/women? It seems like many times when people begin questions like "Why do men/women..." they aren't interested in an outside explanation (especially not from the other side). People are looking for an opportunity to vent their own opinions and validation of those views.

Besides, everyone knows men rarely listen to women. Tuning women out is a defense mechanism we develop in order to retain our hearing and sanity http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Then again I'd have to say women rarely listen to men either.

My wife likes Il2 enough to get me some things in the past to enjoy it more, but she did that for me. The chances of her actually flying it...that is a different matter and I do not ever see that happening. As far as women in general, and believe me I claim to be no expert, not nearly as many women like the aspect of blowing each other to bits in a non social environment. That is just the way that most women are. They enjoy games that have more of a social interactivity than men. Il2 has virtually none, unless you use Teamspeak or Ventrilo to actually feel like you are part of something larger than just yourself and a bunch of others on your "team".

Hi all,

And moving this discussion along a bit...

Why are women in most worldwide societies/cultures regarded as second class citizens?

When I suggest 'most' I would qualify this by suggesting 90% of worldwide societies/cultures regard women as second class....and yet Western media has nothing positive to say about this discrimination.

Food for thought..

Best Regards,
MB_Avro.

A dude finds a bottle, opens it up and a Genie pops up.
He got one wish from Genie.

So he asks:
'Could you build a bridge to Hawaii, I always wanted to visit Hawaii but am really afraid of airplanes and ships'

Genie replys:
' Ouch, you know even as a Genie I'm limited in my capabilities, you know how far it is to Hawai from the mainland USA and how deep the ocean is? That' a real, real difficult task even for me! Don't you have another wish??

So he thinks for a moment, then goes:
' I all my life I never understood women; make me understand women instead!?

Genie:
' Let's talk about that bridge again...'

Not really. My sense of humour OTOH leaves a lot to be desired.
