I was driving down the road running some errands today when I went by the end of the runway of Dobbins Air Force Base. I was thinking "I wonder if I will see any fighter jets today" because yesterday I saw 2 F/A 18s coming in to land. Right at that moment, without a sound...an F-22 went over my head at about 200 feet altitude with the wheels already in the wells. I drive a convertible, so I got a great view as he rolled in about 30 degrees left bank and climbed out. The wierd thing was it wasn't grey like they are supposed to be painted. It was in desert camo. A rusty brown & sand color on top and grey underneath. Maybe it was just primered and they were flight testing it.
A few seconds later the normal F-16 chase plane flew over with the blower going and it was amazing how much louder it was! That F-22 sure was quiet. I went to Comp USA and it went over again while I was in the store. I came out & it went over again with it's gear down. I drove down the road and here it came again. It continued to circle the field and went right over me at least 8 times. I kept thinking... "I've seen it already, whatever" but I had to look up anyway.

I hear ya with the urge to look up no matter what. It's always very compelling.

I was out plinkin' prairie dogs about 15 years ago when I felt the sun's heat diminish on my back and neck. I also noticed a shadow out of the corner of my eye. For a split second I thought a cloud was passing over head. Then it hit me, a vibration and deafening roar even with my silencios (hearing protectors, muff style) on. I rolled over and I was face to belly with a B-52 BUFF flying at 100 to 200 feet AGL. I can still recall the smell of the exhaust from those 8 jet engines.

I did some checking with the local AF detachment and it seems that my plinkin' grounds was also near one of S.A.C.'s radar bombing ranges which was scored by the AF detachment.

I went out there many times to shoot as well as to watch B-52G/H and my favorite, B-1B scream overhead at low level. I must have been known to some of the crews because on several occasions I received wing waggles from the bombers once they passed over me. The one, must cherished, memory I have is a B-1B that as it flew over me it lit the afterburners and did a barrel roll while sweeping its wings back.

I guess that's an advantage of living in a sparsely populated part of the country. The military could train and not upset to many people. Now, cows on the other hand didn't seem to enjoy it as much as I did.

Happy Glocking,

I saw one a few days ago flying out of Langley AFB. They got one there was a trainer aircraft. Pretty neat looking.

What makes them Test over high population areas? This is corn.

Remember that school shooting a few months ago...Air Guard F~16 (?) strafed and shot up a school a few miles outside the shooting range. Not sure if the school closed for a day or longer, if so the Air Guard may have found new popularity with teh yoots (no yoots were in school at the time).

...and Stay Away from CompUSA...its just unsafe for hardcore computer users. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I was told by a Commercial pilot here that they take them to a pocket somewhere at high altitude/restricted airspace in the area and test them. But what do we know?

Last time I was in Marietta I saw a Raptor coming into Dobbins with two F-18s in tow. The F-18s you see all the time, but Raptors...not so much http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

anyone whos been to a airshow in the uk knows what i mean http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

back in the day, they tide 3, and later 5 gloster gladiators together, wingtip to wingtip. so, they did the obvious thing, low level aerobatics at airshows http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

back in the mid 80s when I worked 4 yrs at Lockheed (at Dobbins AFB) I spent an ungodly amount of time at that cemetary off Cobb Parkway at the end of the runway. Lots of great photos I got....that's what got me into photography and now I make my living at that.

There were F-15As then in the Air Guard, before they got B-1s and went to warner robbins AFB, and A-7Es, A-6Es, OV-1s, OV-10Ds, all sorts of good stuff. and of course the C-5Bs I was making parts for. Lots of flightline activity with C-130 orders etc. Haven't had a chance to wait around to see an F-22. In 88 My machine center was being set up for its producion with new CNC stuff, but I digress...

Lots of neat stuff at Dobbins over the years...I've seen a P-47D-25 (just passing through), New Jersey ANG F-106s, Canadian Tutors and T-33s, even a restored C-124 the ANG restored that flew out.

The oddest thing one day around 1987 was an F-16B coming in to a reception of emergency vehicles on a day I didn't have my camera. One third of one wing was missing, but this guys greased it on in like normal landing. It had collided with one of the F-15s filming an add with a nascar driver in the back seat. the 15 driver punched out over Tenn. Of all the times I didn't have a camera. Dobbins is a great place for plane watching. You shoulda seen the F-105Gs back in the early 80s...now that's an airplane.

When I lived in Llanberis in Snowdonia I regularly got to see hawks, harriers, Tornado's and the occasional F15 doing low level training in the mountain valleys up there. It was quite a sight to be half way up a cliff face and look down into the cockpit as they flew past.

Also got to see almost daily were RAF helicopters doing training and real mountain rescue, they do it for free in the UK, no insurance required, you get stuck climbing and the RAF come and rescue you, cheaper than paying for training. Those guys have real skill keeping those Wessex's and Seaking's so still in such high winds.

Dobbins AFB is adjacent to Lockheed where they assemble the F22. They have to flight test them there before they fly them out to Langley or wherever. Kind of like a 46 million dollar test drive at the Ford dealer. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif They always seem to have an F16 hanging onto them like a remora on a shark. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

If you are ever driving down Cobb Parkway and you pass by a B-29 on the side of the road, you're there. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Oh, and I was at Comp USA to buy MOH Pacific Assault. I want to see what Guadalcanal looks like from a jarhead's point of view. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Sterf m8,
That is just not true! It would no doubt defeat an F16 (in the right hands of course) but would have extreme difficulty against an F22. The question is would two or three defeat an F22? Probably! I say this because of cost. I believe that an F22 costs 3-4 times the price of a Typhoon (based on what I read about 5yrs ago so probably well out of date) but then you have the cost of three trained aircrew, swings and roundabouts maybe? The amount of expertise available to the manufacturers of both aircraft would enable both to build something better if they wanted, but it comes down to money old chap, money! Also from about the same timespan as the info above I believe the F22 was costed to replace F15's on a 3 to 1 basis, that should also give you some idea of this aircrafts capability http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I live under the flight test corridor for the F-22. Up until a few months ago it was a regular occurrence to hear the sonic booms. It you were quick enough you could look up and see the contrails from the F-22 and F-16 chase plane heading away fast. Sometimes I saw them coming and had time to get the binoculars.

Cool..............will you be allowed to take this new plane out in the wet? or is it the allweather dryweather variant similar to the B2???????????

I would hope with a cockpit like this....

They would be able to take it out at night & in the rain even if it is mainly air superiority! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Any of you guys from Marietta know what became of the nifty selection of gate guard planes? The F-105G was my favorite, but I moved away from there for a few years, and when i came back, I found this cool B-29 (they built them there in ww2) and all the gate guard jets were gone...F4D,F100,F84F.

And are all the USAF SP and Marine sandbag emplacements still in place? Last time I drove by there weeks after 911 there was an M-60 postion set up at the BOQ entrance, and Hummers driving around with them to. I live only 60 miles from there, but can't break away to go see.
