Man, I was just playing the Bismarck single mission and. . .wow. They really put some detail into this simulation.

There were some slight historical oversights, but for the most part I was really amazed at how accurately they portrayed the engagement. It's tough to watch that thing get absolutely pummeled the way it did. It was almost a constant chain of explosions. It really makes you feel for the guys who were actually there.

The damage model is pretty awesome.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/ILikePortillos/Friedrich%20Weiss/DKMBismarckBadlyDamaged5-27-1941.jpg

It even lists hard to starboard before going under.

And they didn't stop there. The boat continues to turn completely upside down before it makes its nose dive to the bottom.

Yeah its cool, the only thing missing from battleship sinkings are the cannons falling from their mountings as they were only dropped in similar to a tank. So when it rolls the cannons should fall out. That would be cool http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I noticed today that objects dont fall of decks though. When they were making the game im sure i recall them saying items would roll off the deck ect, but the tanks on the ship i sank the other day stuck their like they were superglued!

In that scenario game is it possible to stop them from sinking the Bismark? I mean like, what if you manage to sink the Rodney and King George V before they get to do too much damage?

Same mission was in Silent hunter II, never succeeded in saving the Bismarck, and believe me i tried ...

Then the Bismark sails away happily ever after. I got the 2 BB's and the remaining DD as well. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif
It just sets off after the battle.

You would think that a 35 ton tank would break loose from its tiedown chains and crash about the deck. Of course in real life such deck cargo would go flying. In the game the tanks and vehicles on deck are just eye candy. Same with planes. As somebody posted elsewhere, the planes did not sit on the deck with their wings folded, but were crated and then reassembled in England. Still, they do look pretty and help you visualize what cargo you are sending to the bottom.

Last night I was working over a C2 that I had immobilized, raking the decks with my flak gun. It was really neat how the trucks went flying through the air and over the sides. After that bit of fun I got to work seriously and put her under with my deck gun. I knew that a destroyer from the convoy would be coming back to look for me. Too late, of course. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This is my first story, and I didn't do that much research into the event so it may or may not be accurate.

The Radioman crashed into the control center, with an urgent expression on his face and a message in his held tight in his hands.

"Sir, the Bismarck has been damaged by air attack and is requesting assistance ASAP! Grid BF13! We have been ordered to provide escort from the Feuhrer himself"

I knew that we were only 12 or so hours from the location he had reported, so I ordered us to go the aide of our comrades.

"Very well, Helmsman flank speed bearing 157!"

To my dismay, a powerful storm lay across the area and we were not able to make more than 11 knots.

<14 hours later>

On a quick examination of the chart, I ordered us to dive to 50 meters for a Hydrophone check, as we were near the Bismarck's reported position. "Contact! Large Warship bearing 254! Medium Range It has to be the Bismarck sir, I can tell by the sounds of the Damaged Rudder!"

We charged towards the ship and picked up more warships at Close Range, these had to be the British.

I ordered us to periscope depth and what I saw, took me back for a breath. The Battleships Rodney and King George V and a pair of Destroyers had opened up on the Damaged Battleship. I ordered tubes 1 and 2 flooded and set to 12 meters depth, Magnetic Pistol. Once I acquired a solution on the Rodney I ordered "Los!" Blessedly, neither torpedo detonated prematurely, and the second seemed to have found an ammo bunker, because the Ship nearly blew in half and began sinking immediately. I did a quick check of the Bismarck, and saw to my dismay, A round hit and blow off several sailors on board, but otherwise it kept sailing and firing, so I resumed my attack. I then set tubes 3 and 4 to detonate under the King George V and fired. Anticipating it not to be enough I ordered us to come around 180 degrees. The Torpedos hit as soon as we finished turning. I had already set a solution on tube 5, so I was waiting and fired! The torpedo Impacted the already listing ship, and sealed it's fate. I then began shouting at the forward torpedomen to reload faster, but too might delight, saw the Bismarck blast the closest destroyer clean in half. Stunned by the sudden light show, I recomposed myself, and began to draw up a solution for the already damaged second destroyer. Before the tube was reloaded however, another Salvo from the Bismarck finished this ship.

I dove immediately to 25 meters for another Hydrophone check, and to my delight, found that only the Bismarck and us were in the Area. I surfaced the ship and pulled up next to the Damaged Ship. Surprisingly, It had sustained little damage during the battle. Together, we sailed at the Bismarck's damaged full speed to Brest, where we had already radioed in requesting assistance. Along the way, two more U-boats and 3 destroyers met with us, and we drove off a squadron of Liberators attempting to Finish the Bismarck. We were welcomed as hero's and the entire crew was promoted and awarded well. Our final tonnage was 77,167 tons as we pulled into the Sub Pen. I could only wonder what would have happened, had we not made it in time...

Well it was my first story, so I don't know how I did (I know I'm no Messervy http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ) . Ironically, Because of the ferosity of the action, I didn't take any screenshots, until after the last destroyer was sunk, and those were mainly to prove to myself that I had indeed done it. The Bismarck began to sail in Circles for days on end (probably from the damaged rudder) so I ended the mission and made up the rest. U-49 has successfully managed to find it's way into the history books, and I wonder now how the war would have progressed had the Bismarck not sunk...

Here are the pics to Prove my story, The Destroyer shots were taken to show nothing was left in all directions.

By the way, Chrystine, I just installed FSS and am rather confused as to how to work it. If you could help it would be greatly appreciated. Also how do I hide the menus (Message Box, Compass, etc...) when I take the pictures? Do I just have to take from the event camera? Does FSS hide them?

Thanks in advance!

It just sets off after the battle.

If you followed the bismarck long enough you would see it dies even if you sink the two battleships. Check the mission build up in the editor and their is a very famous carrier steaming north to intercept, i think it has escort too http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif thought its a while since i looked at this mission.

Though if you could sink this too then maybe the Bis would survive!

I've played the mission as well, very fun. Its every more fun when you graba Type XXI and lay it on the British attackers! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif. You can see in the multiple pics of the Bismarck that her 16 inch guns look like brand new, when, in fact, they sustained many hits. Has anyone been able to save the Bismarck when they tried the mission ? I came close, sinking the battleship King George V, and wounding the Nelson class, but not close enough.

Yup, this is an awesome single mission and seeing it was my 1st taste of SH3 (1st mission played before starting any careers), it just blew me away!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

The 1st couple of times I was too awestruck to try and save Bismarck, too busy spectating, but when I eventually tried to save her, it wasn't too hard to sink KGV & Nelson. I ended the mission there and didn't see where Bismarck sailed off to after that.

It seems like Bismarck is going in a straight line ? I understood that her rudder system was disabled by a Swordfish torpedo and she was stuck doing long right turns ? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

No she was hit, which made her veer off to the right for a while. But they started moving by turning one prop, then the other to try to make the ship move straighter. It was long and labourious, i think there is one quote even attributed to the captain at this stage when asked if they wanted to try to fix the rudders he said "to hell with it i dont care" or similar.

Wait i will go have a look on the interweb.
