I was researching about playing the the 109's prop pitch to increase turn and climb effectiveness.

You cruise at 2500-3000 rpm, then crank up your prop pitch throughout the turn/climb to keep those rpm's. Yes?

The auto pitch keeps the RPM at a certain value, depending on the version of 109.

With skillful use of the manual pitch, you can keep the RPM 50-100 RPM higher than the automatic. The engine can safely run at this level indefinitely.

If you can keep the RPM stable at this level you can gain a small performance increase. I recorded a climb time to 5000m improvement of 5% while using manual pitch in a 109G2.

In level and steady climbing flight, the RPM is easy to keep within a safe zone. In turning or combat the RPM changes too much, and you will likely blow your engine.

The downside is that you have to stare at the tachometer to keep the RPM in the safe zone. This will kill your situational awareness. The engine will also heat up at an increased rate. Most of the hype surrounding manual pitch is poppycock.

I tell you what--- try climbing on the Crimea map leaving the pitch on auto. Make note of how far you can climb, and how quickly. Notice your manifold pressure and RPM.

Try the same thing with the pitch on manual. Set PP however you want, it won't make any difference. Try it several times. Notice your manifold pressure and RPM.

How'd you do? Can you climb at all with the PP on manual?
