I remember watching a documentary once where an RAF spit pilot was talking about how he saw a bomber making a run for parliment/buck palace, his guns dry so he flew his wing through the bombers tail cutting it off. Yey, for crazy people.

Is this posible in Il2? I realise you need a pretty sturdy plane against something squishy but with my inability to down bombers without a serious cannon it's gotta be worth a go /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Memorys of 'hot shots', lets do it the old fasioned way /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I've taken a few rudders / elevators off with the nose cone of my mig, but it doesn't tend to knock them out of the sky, and you have to get really close at low speed...

ps. any tips on engaging bombers? My engine usually catches the first bullet /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Or I run out of ammo and they pootle off like nothing happened.

Engage bombers at an angle from the top or bottom. Do this with lots of speed. Make a pass and fire..repeat this until she is down.

So its normal to only have ammo to take down 1/2?
Wheres it best to aim? engines or cockpit?

Thanks for reply..

dont get suckered into coming in slow behind the tail gunner unless u like oil on your shield our your mellon shot off, for He-111 i love to do a head on attack if i can becuase the pilots are so vulnerable and no armour just a plexi glass canopy, or ill come in from a angle take a shot and dive away gaining more speed making it hard for gunners to hit me, to do a slash attack and climb is suiced specially on pe8 which has good gun, they will ripe u apart from the top gunner position. For the Tb3 good luck and be ready to refly and try to hit it again on your next flight cuz she will still be flying, The tb3 has to be olegs joke in this game, she is made of depleted uranium balsa wood, you can flame all 4 engines and it will fly forever, and not explode. Now a fuel tank will not explode if she is full, becuase the fuel mixture is too rich in liquid form to support ignition, but a fuel tank not full will have vapor which are highly volitile and the fire will expand cause a explosing than the liquid fuel will spread and vaporize causing a even large explosion. i doubt most bomber pilots fly with 100% fuel, and after flying for awhile it should have exshuasted some of the fuel leaving vapor in the tanks. I have hit tb3 with bf109k with mk108 wingpods, that is 3 mk108 30mm He firing cannons, with 15 shots and the plane flew on, realistic probaly not, could it happen 1 out of a 1000 times yes, the TB3 is a joke, other bomber like He-111 if u concentrate all your fire on a motor or 1 wing even a yak3 can bring it down will some solid hits. but to concetrate your fire means u have to hang out and slow your closing speed usally right behind tail gunner, best bet just slash in from above like havok said take a good burst and come back at her with as much speed as u got until u bring it down

You can take off the occasional bomber component with parts of your own aircraft, but the collision part of the software is a bit weird at times, so I wouldn't rely on it.
I've successfully used my rudder to slice off wings on ju88's, and used my landing gear on He111's, but they were final acts of desperation.

A better way to kill bombers I find is to dive down on them, aiming for engines, then let your flightpath take you under them, then level out, get 500 metres + ahead of them, and climb sharply, letting them pass underneath you, then level out, and dive back down on them again.

Your flight path would look a lot like a sinewave from the side [and you never thought you had any use for trigonometry!/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif ]

Head on passes at german bombers are well worth doing too. Those plexigalss cockpits are extremely inviting. They make a great first encounter, then climb above them, turn and apply the above formula.

Here's a hint: Practice off-line, initally at 1/4 speed, then work up to full speed. You'll get your eye in for deflection shooting, then you'll pick up the speed later.

Hope this all helps. Good luck, and let us all know how you go.

cheers,
Tony

Aim for the wing roots from the side and slightly behind or from directly above and slightly behind.

The wing root is the most vulnerable place because it's devastating place to get hit there on any AC. Think about it. All the weight of the fuselage pulling down on the wing root, all the lift of the wing pulling up. turbulence rocking it back and forth. Wing roots have to be built strong, but even minor structural damage can snowball into a lost wing. Bomber AC because of their added weight and engines mounted in the wing suffer double from this and even the 2 X .50 in the nose of my P-39 can clip a TB3.

What's so great about the TB-3? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif All you do is dive below it and rape it's vulnerable underside leaving the gunners to scratch their a$$es.

It's not foolproof, but it sure takes a few notches off and turns Oleg's joke into a slow, lumbering airplane that still has wooken parts and supporting wires exposed. It's a dinosaur. Treat it as such and you will beat it.

that was the famous Squad Leader Pete Townsend who rammed the bomber heading for either Buck Palace (or I think St Paul's cathedral?).

He later was even more famous for marrying into the royal family and writing about the Battle of Britain (Duel of Eagles) though I didn't think it was a great book.

Great courage though and a great story...quite the public morale booster at the time I would think...

P-47 will take any bomber out in one bnz pass if you know where to point your guns.

At least, I can do this np in QMB (online is another story, because anything that isn't a bomber can outturn, outclimb, outdive(well, not everything can outdive you), and outkill you.

Aim for the wing roots. You can take a PE8 out with a 109 F4 easily by aiming for the wing root or the spot between the inner and outter engines..and thats one 20mm not two like the MiG.

That's Pete Townshend with an "h".

And he's innocent!

So can a 109, and well, any plane with decent firepower.
