View Full Version : What system are you running SHIII on?

04-27-2005, 07:40 PM
I have:

OS: Windows XP
Processor: P4 2.93 ghz
Memory: 512 mb DDR ram
Graphics card: 256 mb Nvidia Gforce Fx5200

Do I need to upgrade to the recommended 1 gig of memory to get this game to run more smoothly or is the problem just poor coding on the part of the developers? It gets VERY choppy when I sink a ship, almost to the point of being unplayable.

04-27-2005, 08:00 PM
Unless you can do both, you should upgrade your video card 1st. Even at 256mb the Fx5200 is really not a true DX9 card. The extra ram you mentioned is important too, but you will not see a real performance increase until you upgrade the video card.

04-27-2005, 08:18 PM
When I started I was using a radeon 9600 xt with 512 ram. It was consistantly choppy during the training missions, and almost stalling when I tried to play campaign. Even sitting in port was taxing my system. I added another 512 ram and it's smoothed out a lot, but still very choppy. Next step will be upgrading my athlon 1800 and motherboard. That should solve any remaining problems.

Sinking ships didn't cause the chopping to get any worse though. Not nearly as bad as you seem to be getting. I'd have to agree with caltone. Get a new vid card. And remember that some people have graphics problems with nvidia cards here.

04-27-2005, 08:37 PM
Thanks for the info, any suggestions on a better video card that won't put too much hurt on my wallet?

04-27-2005, 09:32 PM
Athlon 1.4ghz<O/C 1.77ghz>
Nvidia 128mb fx5200
1gb kingston hyperx (O/C)
Windows Xp sp2

I notice alittle drop in frame rates. I will use fraps and note the frame rates I am getting in game. With this computer configuration I can still play the game with little noticeable slowdown.i.e. it's still playable.

04-27-2005, 10:03 PM
I haven't seen any stutter yet on this box. I am though still fooling with the settings on the vid card to get as much eye candy as I can as I am an old IL2/FB/PF pilot that was used to it. First thing if you have stutter is to back off the video settings a touch...if that doesn't help add a stick of RAM.

Works fine for me now. Had some FPS lose after patch 1.2 but that seems to have gone away now. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Don€t seem to have any trouble playing or losing frame rates on this rig. Video card and ram would help you Shaggyofwv . But try What TX-Cuda suggested back off your setting a bit and see what happens. And make sure you have no programs running in the background. ( ie windows services, antivirus.) that will be using what ram you already have.

i had big problems after installing sh3.
screeching sounds and stuff and my cd-drive and dvd-drive started to run and totally locked up my computer. my cd-drive stopped working after a while..i disconnected the cd-drive and the game works fine now..i think it was a starforce incompability problem..i have to buy a new cd-drive..thanks ubisoft for using starforce http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Yes, your video card is the bottleneck of performance for this game. I had the 5200fx before, and I know too painfully well how it performs on newer games (I'm happily using the 6600gt right now).

Suggestion: depends on how much you are willing to spend. If you don't want a major upgrade, and want a way out cheap, then try something like the 5900 or 5950. If you are more hardcore, try the 6800 series.

xp sp2 / Intel D865Perl
P4 2.6ghz 800mhz FBS (hyperthread)
Nvidia 5900 fx / Samsung 730b (17inch LCD)
1gig DDR ram / 80gig SATA HD
Fortissimo sound card
DVD / CD memorex burner
450w powersupply

I build the whole thing (minus the monitor, video card, and DVD burner) for under $600 USD 2 yrs ago. My system isnt top of the line but it plays pretty much any game on the market with fairly decent FPS.

In-game I average 30 FPS - 90 FPS depending on my view.

As far as those who want a new video card, if you are looking for a good mid-range card the ATI 9800 pro is the way to go. If you got the cash go for the Nvidia 6800 ultra (just make sure you got a 550w power supply!).

I have:

Asus A7N8X-X
AMD Athlon XP3000+
512mb RAM
ATI Radeon 9600XT
Creative Live 7.1
Win XP sp1

With me it works great. I don't have framedrops, unless there's an explosion with smoke...

I have as follows:

Windows XP Pro
PIV @ 3.06MHz HT
2GB Ram DDR 400
SB Audigy 2
ATI Radeon 9800XT 256MB
1x80GB HDD + 1x160GB HDD
TIR 3 Pro
Hotas Cougar
CH Pro pedals.
(Yeas, I´m a flight sims fan!)

SHIII runs flawlessly on my rig.

Oh goody, a wanger-fest! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

XP-Pro SP2
Asus P4C800-E
P4 3.2 HT 800
1Gb Corsair PC-3500
GF6800-Ultra (480w Enermax PSU)

The lowest FPS I see is 43.

I reckon the best bang-for-buck vid-card upgrade, on a budget, would have to be the ATI 9800. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

04-28-2005, 08:23 AM
My rig is:

AMD Sempron 2ghz (3000+)
1 gb ram
GF 6600 GT

I run with the settings on max and 4 times AA

It stutters a bit when there is alot of smoke after a torpedo hit.

I might upgrade to 2 gb of ram next month since it is so cheap now and I want to do it before the prices go up again.

04-28-2005, 08:41 AM
Intel P4 3.22Ghz
WinXP Home SP2

Game runs well for me, gets a little choppy when looking through the periscope at an exploding ship. The UZO bug is present, but it doesn't seem as bad after I upgraded from the VIIB to the IXB.

04-28-2005, 08:47 AM
specs in sig game runs perfectly at 100% settings, with AA and AF

04-28-2005, 09:21 AM

Running the game with 4AA and 8AF and no stutter at all. I get my lowest fps (25-30) when I look around in the harbour in a start of a mission.

To load the game takes about 30 seconds and to load a saved game takes about 45-50 seconds!
With loading times I mean how long the red bar will be present on the screen!

My rigs specs are in my sig. I had 1GB of RAM installed prior to installing the game (no problems with Starforce except operator error in reading the key properly). I have noticed that SHIII uses every bit of RAM it can and then some.

AMD Athlon 64 FX-51
Asus ATI Radeon 9800XT
1GB Kingston HyperX RAM
Creative Audigy2 ZS Platinum

SH3 runs great. 140-ish fps with four programs and all of XP's default services running in the background. I'm hoping Black Viper's new site gets finished soon so I can use his guide to trim down the services a bit.

04-29-2005, 11:19 AM
I am using a home built computer.

AMD Athlon64 3500+
Asus A8V Deluxe MB
1GB DDR 400

I've had very few problems. Just some CTD's when I would order the deck guns manned..etc.
I saw a mention of Bink Video Tools in another thread and I saw it (binkw32.dll) in one of my crash related files so I installed it. I have had no problems since installing it.

Just added the second gig of ram which really helped out in SH3 . SH3 seems to be a mem hog ; as I have tested it to use 1020-1100mb during game play .

04-29-2005, 04:47 PM

ATI 9600 256mb Graphic card
Athlon XP 2600 333FSB

Nvidia Nforce MoBo (something like that anyway)
768 DDR dual channel ram
200 g HDD

Sh3 runs as smooth as a smooth thing on mine, no problems at all. Only get a slight FPS drop when close to Water plumes from D/charges

Just out of interest, i used to be a Nvidia Graphics fan boy, but got ragged of with them when i bought several in a relativly short space of time and thought that each time i got one the performance dropped. So much that i won't have another Nvidia card in my system.
Got my ATI and it out performed all the Nvidia stuff i'd had before and my m8s NV card which is supposed to be a superior piece of kit.

Odd that an Nvidia graphics card performed like a bag of **** on an Nvidia MoBo. But ATI are as smooth as silk. Don't get it.

May be a personal preference thang.

Game runs very well except at harbor when underway when it slows down to 19 - 23 fps........out at sea it can be anywhere from 39 to 50 fps.
I know my pc is dated but I am in the process of building a new one.
