if you want trees on your terrain but have no extra juice for excellent... there is a way to get them.

simply go into the il2fb folder and open conf.ini. all the way on the bottom, there are settings for opengl and directx, so pick which one you use. set the "Forest" setting to 2 to get trees on the landscape. you can retain your low settings and still get trees without (hopefully) too much loss of fps. to see the trees you have to be on the deck, but i don't have enough time right at this moment to tweak any more settings. maybe if you guys can work at it some more, you can share what some of the other less obvious settings control.

so far, here is what i got:

on excellent:
sky-1
forest-2
landshading-1
landdetails-2
landgeom-2
texlarge-1
texlandqual-3
texlandlarge-1

*note these may differ, i'm not sure

on very low:
sky-1
fores-0
landshading-1
landdetails-0
landgeom-0
texlarge-1
texlandqual-1
texlandlarge-0

so if you want trees, you can turn up the forest setting to 2, and turn down some other setings. landgeom affects my fps a bunch, so you might try cranking it down a notch.

So what exactly do we have to edit to get forest? So far my forest is set at 2..but i'm not getting any forests, lol. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Edit: nevermind...there's two forest settings. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

what i wopuld like is a way to fix the way when scud running at low level you can fly through the little trees that are visible but crash into the invisible ones from low down that make up the "forest" effect

Pretty neat find! Too bad there's not a setting for flocks of birds.

i remember in Janes WW2 fighters there was a setting like that in only in the config file too, within the game it self, one could select the level of objects(trees and buildings) from low to medium and high =1,2 and 3,
but if you edited that entry in the config file and instead of having 1,2 or 3 you put in there ...say 11 , the landscape in the game woould fill with trees and buildings 11 times more quantity...i can run it like that now since computers have gotten faster than when that game first came out.

for those who have WW2 fighters and didnt know this, its a nice surprise for ya.

i forgot what entry it was but i can look it up if anyone is interested... i wonder if that entry in FB can be edited to a higher number and get even more trees for those of us with faster computers.....

I was wondering the same thing, and may give that a try, as soon as I feel brave enough to chance it.

Timmothias, Thank you so much for this info. Thought I'd share my findings:

These were made using medium settings, with forest edited to "2"

If you download il2 Manager (ver4 is the latest one which works with the latest FB patch), these are the conf.ini settings that it changes, plus some other multiplayer and campaign tweaks.

I always wondered why my trees looked crap sort of floating discs. Thanks for the tip I will change that tonight.

Everyday I find something new to destroy my installation heaven forbid if I ever need to re-install or rebuild my PC.

Mind you its about time I rebuilt it from scratch just to waste a few hours of my life.

so does anyone know what the other terrain variables do? i'm trying to find my optimal settings, but it's gonna take a while.

Hmm making that change and all it did was add a few extra trees on the map. My discs or 'forests' were still odd floating green things.

I hate the off floating green things because at low altitude by the time I see them it's usually too late.

does anyone know?

if not i'll just have a look later but i'd rather not spend ages on somewthing someone already knows,,,
