View Full Version : We need a Forest=4

Now that we have the optimised dlls that allow water #4, it seems there would be ample advantage for an optimised forest as well.

I really love the look of the trees as they appear in Forest#3. The colour and variety are far superior to #2 and below. The only drawback is that by default, these trees appear in the cities and towns as well. The perforemance hit for running Forest=3 at the same time as perfect water is therefore quite high.

What I am wondering, is it possible for the boffins to make an forest=4 option that retains the #3 style trees in the open country but does not show any trees in the populated areas? This would give us the best of both worlds in regards to water/trees/fps.

What do you think. Is there any wisdom in this?

S~!

Very interesting post.

I just tried forest 3, I play perfect water 0. On my rig I actually got a minimal frame boost. I have never thought to try forest 3 -- It is stunning! Really brings the game alive.

I am all for the authors suggestion, but I wouldn't hold your breath sir. Right now the focus is on getting the Addons in and B.O.B.

Thanks for the topic. On my ati 850xtpe it looks stunning.

I never had any performance hit with even extensive forest 3 trees in berlin or other low performance areas. Not even with my old 1800+, 512MB, GF3 rig.

I'd rather have a better forest technique - i hate crashing into the forest layers all the time, because I can't see them at treetop level. Some must be done there... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Arent those forest "layers" the reason you can have large forested areas, and still not have your pc grind to a halt?

Besides they look relatively good from up high.

I am hopeful that Ian boys et al, who will have license to continue working on maps etc..for FB/PF , will come up with new textures and methods of map building - as Ian himself aluded to WRT the Burma map and the Norwegian fjiords that he is working on now - that will work well framerates wise and be vast improvements aesthetically over the current textures we already enjoy.

I love forest 3, it gives so much more to the landscape (and less places to crashland! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ). And I see no slowdown.

But rather than have a Forest = 3, why not a People = 1?

The only thing missing now are people sometimes in the cities. Perhaps they could be configured to vanish (running to cover) when enemy planes arrive...

Sorry, Feathered_IV, slightly hijacked your thread...
