buy his book.

Ernie Pyles War. he was a reporter for the entire western front then when hitler fell he transferred to the pacific and was killed on the front lines. thats one brave man.

Definitely required reading for any WW2 student. You come away with yet another perspective on the practical and real side of campaigning a war.

Two notable stories that spring to mind:

1) - U.S. tank recovery crew driving up to the front at dusk to collect two panzers before the Germans show up to get them.

2) Rescue of a Spitfire pilot who spent several days soaked in fuel and stuck in his cockpit upside down after crash-landing in a battlefield. (Man the Brits are tough chaps)

Most of Pyle's material came from the "everyman" point of view, and not the brass with their flags and maps.
