In Novemeber 1944 (1944GW career) I left Bergen to attack the Tommies in the North Sea. After finishing my assigned grid, AN68 I headed north when I ran into a Hunter Killer group of 5 DDs. A J-Class, 3 C-Class and one Hunt type I.
Well before this XXI I would go super silent and pray I was not detected. With the U-3007 I lined up the lead one with a 2 fish fan and both hit. As soon as they went off I threw a T-4 homi at 30 degrees and that blasted another DD. Then I fired a second homi and took out number 3. The middle C-Class had turned around and I went silent and slow to make no noise and as he sped back to look for me I nailed his sorry can. With only the J-class left I went off silent but stayed slow and the fast loading of the XXI got me a T5 up fast enough to knock out the J-Class before he could make a 360 and have a clue as to my where abouts.
I play at 100% so these fast manual shots were quite good but also very lucky as I seem to guess right for all but one fish (I have had opposite days).
I then headed up to the Russian convoys and attacked my first of the newly redone escorted convoys. There were 3 DDs out front and I saw 8 escorts before I saw a merchant. Still, I crept in at 1KNT and damaged 3 ships and sank a T3 tanker, 2 liberties and one Medium cargo but none of the three damaged sank so I ended up with 39,805 tons.
I have little experience with a XXI as playing 100% and dead is dead means I never got far enough to try one in a career.
What a boat.
If the IX is a school bus and the VIIC is a pick up truck than the XXI is a Formula one racer!
Although I am not sure we can use it correctly. I use it like a fast typeVIIC whereas it was capable of attacking form 50 meters. I doubt we can do that except by luck.

Has anyone else noticed the XXI is terrible at maintaining periscope and snorkel depth in rough seas? At any speed from flank to 1kt mine just porpoises from 10m to 20m. It will eventually smooth out and then start all over again.

And the funny thing is, escorts still have a hard time detecting me. In 15m/s weather I snorkeled at ahead full to within 350m of a C-Class, and didn't even bother with a homing torpedo as he just kept going straight, oblivious.

I have the same problem. I felt like I had the chief in Iron Coffins that could not keep U-953 level and when this happens the pressure causes serious trouble for the crew.
It just seems this should be less in a XXI than a VIIC as it displaces almost 3 times but I do not know how real or not this is.
Anyone? Anyone?
