View Full Version : Raid on Calais

On my way back from the Canaries, in mid-June, 1940, I figured I would try a 'Channel-dash' as the Dunkirk evac is over and the Brits would be less alert/capable. Boulogne and Calais are both 'blue' signifying they are in German hands. Never risked the Channel before in wartime so here goes...

Speeding past Calais at 0100 hours I couldn't resist a peek into the harbour. There was a lot of activity, seems an air-raid was taking place. Spotted a modern tanker, two medium cargoes, an armed trawler, tugboat etc.., all flying French or British colours! Then I noticed a J&K Class DD in dock, firings its AA guns at unseen bombers.

I closed on the surface for a torpedo attack and put two into the (British) modern tanker and two into a (French) medium cargo. I had the deck gun manned as I was getting very close (under 1500m) to the armed trawler but he too was firing at the invisible aircraft and didn't pay any attention to me. I got closer and closer and when within 500m gave him 8 rounds from the gun and he sank without even returning fire!

Screeny of Calais. The best of a bad bunch I'm afraid.

Emboldened by this, I snuck up on the J&K and put a stern torpedo into him, surfaced, from 600m. He didn't fire at me either. After that I cleaned up the harbour, sinking everything that was there, and then resumed course for Wilhelmshaven

At the back of my mind is the fear that Doenitz is going to 'chew me out' for sinking prizes of war in a German harbour!

As I exited the harbour, bullets started pinging off my hull and shells began falling around me. So I trained the deck gun on the mole and blew away the MG34 team who were firing at me and duelled with the angry panzers on the dockside.

Seriously, the port was BLUE on the nav map but it was still clearly in French hands...?? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Nice screeny of the moon, poor shot of anything else... Why is so much darker at night in GWX? I don't remember it being quite so black under stock.

In mitigation for any crimes I might have committed, I showed this to Doenitz. After looking at it for awhile, he said "Very nice, Herr Kaleun, who was the artist?"

The GWX Devs did this on purpose for the ever so popular realism of GWX. If you don't like it so dark, I think this is compatible with GWX : Marhkimovs_LIGHT_NIGHT_mod (http://files.filefront.com/Marhkimovs+LIGHT+NIGHT+modrar/;10366375;/fileinfo.html)

Thanks for that Tuddley! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

My PC is in a room that I can't 'black-out' 100%, so I have to wait until REAL nightfall if I'm playing a combat event in the game at night. I also suffer from a certain level of night-blindness (macular degeneration) which doesn't help.

BTW, I got full credit for the ships I sank there (about 23,000 tons) but the army isn't talking to me for some reason? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

Ta very much for that mod...!

Thank-you for this link, Tuddley!
The photo-realistic moon in GWX 2.1 lacks proper luminosity. Hopefully this will compensate for that.
