All good choices so far. I will throw the F22 into the pot also. What I would do to get behind the stick of one of those http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have to go with the F-14 tomcat.

Yeah it's old, but it's still relatively advanced.

Or the Mig 25 Foxbat, another slightly older one, but big and fast.

Sweden is my new home so I am biased in my choice. I have always loved Swedish aircraft though, what a great line-up of planes there have been in the Swedish air Force!
The Gripen (Griffin) is the last (unfortunately it looks like it might be the very last) in line.

Most sexy?
Probably the Su-30MK.

Most leathal looking?
Close one between Gripen and Typhoon.

For the most beautiful the Su-27, Gripen, Rafale are all really good in my book.

I'd have to say the meanest/most evil looking is probably the A-10.

Although they have been put out to pasture now the Sabb J-35D's were way up there on the coolness scale for me.

For a jet that 1st flew in 1955 you could take that double delta shape and insert it into a modern Sci-fi movie and most likely only plane nuts like us would know it was a real world aircraft.

I agree. It's one of the most beautiful aircraft ever made. I remember seeing it in a Viemaster series of slide reels when I was a boy, and falling in love with it then. There is one at my local museum in Malmö (Tekniska Muséet) - hanging from the cieling as if placed in a childs room.

For retro jets I'd say the Mig21 and then the Lightning (guess who's been watching Discovery recently). Don't know why but it is just such a sexy plane.

I'm also a fan of the F-15. However, without doubt the hands down sexiest plane - curves, sleekness, stunning looks -the MiG 29.

Game over. Meeting adjourned. Thanks very much for coming. Don't forget your umbrellas on the way out.

Personally, I think modern Soviet jets are just danged cool looking. The Su-37 has to be one of my favorites.

Other European designs are nice too. Remind me of their cars. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

For less-modern/somewhat vintage, I'd say the Sabre and the A-4 are my favorite.

I know that the F-22 is the most *** kickingest fighter on the surface of the planet at the moment and that should count for something. But to me, it just looks gormless, like a biffed seagull, or one of those flightless pelagic water fowl thingies. Not photogenic combat skywise.

It's hardly a modern jet any more, but I have always had a soft spot for the F-5. It's such a straight forward design, a pure fighter and nothing more. I was hoping Norway would go for the updated Tiger II, but in stead they opted for upgrading their anaemic looking F-16 fleet, and now they'll probably go for yet another plane that looks like it's made from plastic.

I cannot believe that it has took three pages before someone mentioned the Mirage.
That plane is one of the most cool looking jets around, it reminds me of the type of aircraft that featured in TV shows such as Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet.
The Eurofighter, SAAB Gripen, F-22 and the Dassault Rafale also fall into this category.
My favourite jet however is the Tornado (both GR4 and F3), the GR4 version is IMHO one of the hardest looking aircraft in the air today. The Tornado F3 however looks graceful and elegant.

English Electric Frightning for my money. Closely followed by (Eurofighter) Typhoon. SHAR in 3rd place - wasn't it criminal that Bliar couldn't keep at least one flying until the 25th anniversary?

***

I'm unconvinced by the looks of F-22 & JSF. IMO American styling went awry at about the time the cars got curvaceous for the 2nd time.

In fact I would put forward the theory that the stylistic appeal of a nation's fighter aeroplanes is directly related to the stylistic appeal of her taxis.

IMO American taxis went downhill after about 1980, becoming excessively plastic and curvaceous for the sake of curvaceaousness, and preventing America from matching up to so many of her greatest films.

Thankfully in Britain we still have proper black cabs, though a new (impressively ugly) evolution is starting to take over. I fear for our next generation of fighters. Likewise there are still a few Routemaster busses in London because the public outcry at the total removal of such a design icon would have been awesome to behold. And it would have prevented London from looking like the movies.

(only slightly tongue in cheek)

Also I think that this is a cool bird also. From what I just read the "F" model could super cruise.

Roland that Lightning pic is way too cool. Is it for real? So close in afterburner, contrail pulling target above. That's a great pic.

Modern? -- I guess that means post-modern. I guess best looking is MiG-31 because it still has some design elements of the Classical goal of military aviation: higher - faster - farther. For the most part, the digital wonderHUDjets all "look" the same -- like a Post-ColdWar corporate merger of Northrop/Sukhoi/GeneralDynamics/MiG/etc...

True, it didn't get a gun incorporated into the airframe until the E version, a major example of myopic thinking by the designers and the Airforce brass,(and very nearly repeated by idiot UK politicians with the Eurofighter Typhoon!) but it could bomb, dogfight, intercept, recon, and do all this from either land or sea. Over 5000 produced and equipped most of the West's airforces at one time or another.

It was far from perfect but it must rank amongst the most succesful military aircraft that ever flew. I can think of no other that achieved such a ubiquitous and legendary status.

Well, me 2 favourite jets never made it to production.

North American XB-70 Valkyrie : Sleek and beautiful. Loved the 6 engine 'Millenium Falcon' exhaust end and those fold down wings.

Northrop YF-23 : Sleek without looking bland like the F-22. Makes all those canard and F15/22 types look so yesterday!

I have to agree that the Flanker is just a mean looking thing, and is a beastly machine! But this is one of my faves:

I can't believe that NONE of you guys chose the Mig-15. Sure, it looks like a tin barrel with wings...but that's sexy.

Sorry...just kidding. I have to say the SU-27's are the best looking thing out there. Whoever was on the design bureau must have spent a lot of time in the loo with the latest issue of "Your Nude Comrade" ...Party approved porn for perestroika.

Forget all the latest ****.

Most menacing: Phantom II;
Nicest: Mirage IIIC (&E in original clean design);

Most beautiful. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQxqBd7yBds)
