I really doubt this feature will be added since every cockpit in the game would have to be re-rendered with the moveable parts of the canopy being added as separate objects in each one (at least if you want to see the open canopy from inside). I just don't seem the development team having enough time to do it (cool as the feature would be). Perhaps it will be available in the next sim that Oleg & Co. come out with.

Cheers,

besides. . it would look the same in teh normal pilot view. . . all that would happen is that headshake may go up just a bit, and noise from the wind and buffetting, so on downwind crank up your speakers untill your subwoofer shakes your monitor, and turn on a fan. . and then you have perfectly rendered open cockpit experience.

;-)

(doesnt look cool from externals though. . .I cant help ya there)

Not to mention that the open canopies probably are less useful in real life than they are stylish in movies. Some aircraft even prohibit having the canopy open for various reasons, exhaust fumes being one.

The notable exception would be when bellying it in or ditching.

Well, in truth there is some utility to the opening of the canopy, first of all. . it can get really hot inside a small greenhouse of a dome, behind a massive engine, and in some fighters there is very little elbow and shoulder room, and the ability to drop an arm out is quite nice! In most importantly a tailwheel aircraft has no forward visability when on the ground, and many times very little when on final approach, so the ability to lean your head over while doing S-turns on the ground is handy so you can taxi a little faster with shallower s turns. that dont need to go from edge to edge of the taxiway.

Having said all that. . .I still dont think it is needed in the sim (but hey if it was included I certainly wouldnt object. . assuming effort was put into this after the more critical issues like FMs)

Edit:
If you want to see a pilots view of one of the WWII taildraggers that I fly, here is a link to our squad site, scroll downa few and take a look. . . even moving your head you still must S turn.

this is canopy related but it would make for better bailing cos the canoipes on ww2 planes wernt jetisioned often and it would be cool to havce i loved the feature in cfs3

some planes, like the 109, couldn't ope the canopy in mid-flight because of it's design, it opened sideways, and the airstream would rip it off
only slider canopies could be open, and i guess the drag increased a bit

I gather that the La7 could reach 102 F inside there - even in winter (68 is comfortable, mid-70's are a warm summer's day in my part of the world).

If we ever get head movement, this would be a useful feature .. the pilot's head out into the slipstream.
Of course, we'd have dust build up on the goggles (reduced vison?).

If we don't get head movement - then I don't think it's worth the extra trouble. There are several hundred planes to re-model just for one feature.
Remember - it's the sound as well as the visuals that will need changes.

First, I don't think that this feature is dramatic hard to do. Some older sims ie. BoB has this option. Canopys all of planes are movables elements of models (look bailout or crashes). Those need only to add new simple animation, not re-modeling. Sound also need just a little changes.

Next, pilots of early ww2 planes like: buffalous, hurries, spits, yaks and many other near always started and landed with open canopy for better vision. Even pilots of typhoons or tempests in end of war. Also taxi on runway. What is strange in this? After landing will be nice open canopy for better realism. Even bf109.
