If you were born in Canada then your nationality is Canadian. If you are an Armenian who has been born in Canada then you are a Canadian of Armenian descent.
Unless of course you subcribe to a tribal culture that places ethicity above national origin.

Sorry it just seem like so many people are confused about things like this.

Benjamin Franklin was a proper Englishman but also a rebel and a Founding Father of the USA.

I'm sure none of you lowly earth people ever heard of it, but I'm from a world in a galaxy more than 60 million light years away, in a galaxy your earth scientists call NGC 4414. Both the name of my homeword and galaxy are impossible to pronounce in your primitive tongue, and scripting them in your cumbersome languages is equally impossible (though one can get close by writing in traditional Chinese, however).

I arrived here by teleporting in an extremely advanced vessel, designed by one who also temoporarily resides on this world, and while here idetifies himself by the alias - "raaaid".

For the purposes of relating myself to your young species however, I am obligated to say that I am of both American and German descent, born in Frankfurt.

Since it unwise for any of you to know of my true being, an MIB agent will visit you shortly and erase the memory of you ever reading this post. Do not worry; it is a completely harmless procedure and is very brief.

Live long and pay your bills...

Gothenburg, or as in swedish G√¬∂teborg
http://www.possibly.me.uk/pics/sunset.jpg
History of Gothenburg

Gothenburg's location around 1600. (Denmark yellow, Norway brown). In the 16th and 17th century, the situation of Sweden's borders made it strategically important to have an outpost on the west coast the exposed area in between rivalling countries Denmark and Norway. After some initial failed attempts, Gothenburg was successfully founded in 1621, by King Gustavus Adolphus (Gustaf II Adolf). The coat of arms was based on the lion of the coat of arms of Sweden, symbolically holding a shield with the national emblem, the Three Crowns, to defend against its enemies.

In 1658 and the Treaty of Roskilde, the Danish and Norwegian provinces (Halland, south, and Bohus County or Bohusl√¬§n, north), became Swedish, and with a less exposed position, Gothenburg was able to grow into an important port and trade centre on the west coast.

The architectural structure was made by contracted Dutch town planners hired by the Swedish king, and the blueprint for the canals of Gothenburg are actually the same as those used for Jakarta.

In the 18th century, the most important industry was the fishing industry. However, in 1731 the Swedish East India Company was founded, and the city flourished due to its foreign trades with highly profitable commercial expeditions to Asian countries.

G√¬∂teborg in around 1700 from Suecia Antiqua et HodiernaThe harbour developed into Sweden's main harbour for trades towards the west and with the Swedish emigration to North America increasing, Gothenburg became Sweden's main point of exit. The importance of Gothenburg as a main port of exit for Swedish emigrants is apparent in the naming of Gothenburg, Nebraska a small Swedish settlement in the United States.

With the 19th century, Gothenburg evolved into a modern industrial city that continued on into the 20th century. The population increased ten-fold in the century, from 13,000 (1800) to 130,000 (1900). In the 20th century major companies that developed were SKF (est. 1907) and Volvo (est. 1926).

In more recent years however, the industrial section has faced a recession, which has spurned the development of new sectors such as increased merchandice and cultural and educational institutions.

On my mothers side: Aussie (Irish/British mixed with German), long gone relative was a superindendant of convicts, another one WAS a convict himself but was eventually freed and became mayor of the town.

On my fathers side: Finnish. Wouldn't have a bloody clue about details, apparently the family records got destroyed in a church fire (trying to avoid tax I assume http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif) One funny thing I've learnt is that in the 15th century or so, my rellie was such a good mercenary that he was awarded titles and land, and changed his name from the old one to the current one (Siira). But then he stooged up and was convicted of treason! Think of it, I could have been Finnish royalty if it wasn't for him! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Born in the US here, to parents born in the US.

Of course, going far enough back my father's side is English, Scottish, and a tiny bit Irish, while my mother's side is entirely German. That's completely meaningless to me, however, since my family members have long ago given up any old traditions that go along with our respective nationalities.

Umm Fritz, you are still Canadian, just because your passport expires has nothing to do with your citizenship status. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif Think of the Canadians who never travel outside Canada and live without passports.

I suppose the only wrinkle would be if you were not born in Canada. I was born in Canada I recently renewed my Canadian passport and had to present my old one, my Canadian birth certificate and a piece of ID with my photo, and a signed document by someone in a responsible position who knew me (my doctor). Lot of paperwork yes, but not as much as for my Greek passport which I finally got after on and off efforts over 12 years. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif But then I had to prove both my parents were Greek and furthermore they were both born in Egypt (Greek citizens though, none of the large Greek community there ever were Egyptian AFAIK but remined Greek and went to Greek schools etc.) plus I had to prove I've never lived in Greece, nor my parents so I could be excused from military service. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Is Canadian bureaucracy really worse than that and how does German compare? Can't wait til I have to renew the Greek passport in 5 years. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I'm keeping every scrap of paper though.

I tried to renew my passport in Beijing. Strange, if you read the passport it says that it is thee ID, yet, factis, you are not allowed to use it for renewing your passport as ID. Then, you need to find someone (Canadian) who fits into a certain category and knows you well. I LIVE IN CHINA! Daaaaa! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

If I can't find one of the "chosen few", then I must pay a fee for a total stranger to say I am who I claim to be.

Then there's the paperwork. I don't have a masters in BS! It's worse than doing your income tax forms.

Getting the German passport was a breeze. German burocracy is much easier and more efficient than what you'll hear Germans whining about, but then again, they've never dealt with the Canadian government. Actually, I got a call from a friend of a friend that work in the Arbeitsamt. They were trying to help, in cooperation with the Canada Employment Center, a German immigrate to Canada. They asked me for consultation because they found the paperwork to be too complicated. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Almost 4 years ago I returned to Canada to visit my family. They gave me such a hard time at the customs. Why are you here? Who are you visiting? What are you doing in China? Blah, blah, blah,....I felt as though I was about to be locked up. If I enter with my German passport, I get a big welcome. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

The same happens when I go to Germany. They don't even open my Canadian passport, just welcome me through. They have enough questions when I flash the German passport though. Still, much less than in Canada. For those reading this, who might be wondering, I'm very white, blond and blue eyed. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Don't get me wrong, I love Canada and still think it's the best country in the world, especially if you have a family, but its burocracy is a terrorist organization more effective than any other. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

BTW, was never asked to serve in Germany but have been asked why I didn't. I simply tell them I haven't been invited.

@Fritz

What is China like? I've always found it a bit strange that China is (back here) always portrayed as a real commy state with iron curtens and all. Totaly closed to the western world.
Yet so many Chinese people come to other countries and start busnisses. You don't here them of the terrible regime we are told to believe there is. And it doesn't look like they have any trouble leaving China.
I think about a year ago I found "proof" that internet out there is heavely sencored. Proof being the Tiananmen Square. As far as proof can be digital.
China is gonna be earth's next superpower, or atleast Azia is and China is a huge part of that.
That aside, there seem to be so many contradictions.
Would you care to spare your thoughts on this matter?

No problem Russ but I don't want to hijack this thread any further than we have already. Maybe we should make a private topic and invite a few since it would no doubt get political.

I really don't know. My grandfather said his father was Black Irish, that's all I really know about it. I do know that his side of the family has dark hair and a "darker" complexion. The German side of my family is very blond and pale.

Bit of a long story but here goes:

Folks did the dirty in Italy, born in the USA, grew up in Canada, came to Malta for a 6 month holiday before going to uni when my folks retired here back in 1990. Still on holiday http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif . Tiny place, but well worth it during the long hot summer months with nothing to do but check out the beaches during the day and run around in IL2 during the night!

I remember reading 12% but that was about 10 years ago.

I still think Chinese will become Canada's second official language and knock French into a number 3 position. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Yeah, but will it be Cantonese or Mandarin? I hear both in Van.

Pirschjaeger

Just north of Toronto there's a small city called Markham. I used to live near it. All the signs were Chinese and it was a common complaint in the media. When I'd go to an ATM in Markham, I'd have 3 languages to choose from. First choice and default was Chinese. Second was English and third was French.

BTW, it was Cantonese. They outnumber the Mandarin speakers bigtime.
