Please adjust the time that thoes smokeing fire holes live for there lasting way too long making online play laggy & unbearable

I know its having an effect now because anytime theres more than 5 of thoes smokeing fire holes in the area of a DF theres constant micro lag bursts it isint my video card either as Im watching the FPS nailed on 55/60 FPS the whole time

Dont get me wrong I love the new effect but please only make them last for 60 seconds or something maybe even 3 minutes but not 20 min..... Please fix it its un-nerving

It certainly doesn't have an effect for me an my buddies when we play online, and it's AAMOF technically unlikely that those fires have a _direct_ effect on lag.

What could happen is that if the server or clients can't fully cope with the effect locally, they then neglect their online tasks to an extent. This might occur.

But for us, the fires didn't even affect a friend who sits in Thailand and plays over a modem connection.

I'm therefor convinced that it's really a matter of how much CPU/GPU horsepower a machine has, an am against reducing the burntime in general. I like it the way it is.

I wouldn't mind if the burntime could be set in one of the ini's, of course.

Agreed! The long lasting smoke pillars add something to the battlefield below. Its ~sweet~ flying into an area and seeing burning stuff from a battle shortly before you got there.

We need as much signs as possible that something is happening actually down there.

This issue doesn't have to do with online play alone; it's not about lag, it's about frame rates. It affects offline as well as online.

I was building an offline mission where you have to attack an airfield and prevent any aircraft from taking off. My frame rate was already quite low before the patch, as there were many flights in the air and static aircraft and other objects on the ground. After the patch the frame rate is higher, as long as you don't shoot down any plane. But in order to win the mission you (and your wingmen) have to destroy about 20 planes that try to take off from the airfield. Some of them will just disappear, but usually I have ~10 smoking wrecks within a radius of less than two kilometres. And at that point the frame rate on my 2.6 GHz P4 Radeon 9500 Pro machine drops extremely.

My suggestion for a solution: Allow only a limited number of fires to burn at the same time. E.g. if there are already five fires and another plane gets shot down, extinguish the first fire before you start a sixth. This would keep the feeling of realism without destroying the playability.

BTW it doesn't look realistic to see 10 identical smoke columns close to each other. In real life, each crash would look differently. Sometimes a small aircraft would even just sink into the soft soil and disappear.

So please limit the number of smoke columns.

Well personally I don't find it realistic at all to see always the same smoke column. I think it looks quite goofy.

unnecessary eye candy. Why have the developers time to code such instead of doing useful things like reducing the muzzle flashes?

Reducing the Muzzle flashes would be GREAT imo I still wana see some flash but not as much as we have now its overwhelming

Back on topic

The Fire/Smoke Pots are fine All Im asking is that they dont burn for 20 minuts its rather anoying & eats up resourses & bandwith

They look great but when theres 20 of them in the area its not realistic it looks like kuwat after sadam burned the oil fields

Its not that appealing for 3 minuts its fine but not 20 min.

They last way too long !!!

Time to upgrade video cards, or lower settings to match your hardwares capability.

Lol.

Do you want us to upgrade our hardware every 3 months?

We need the power of the best hardware to display more AI flights and ground objects, not for 10 identical fires.

Be very careful here...ran some more tests...

Had 4 blue Niobe AA ships shoot down 16 red P11c over the pure white FB snow. Created many smoke plumes in small area. Flew over in blue Me262 and when the shooting stopped, the framerate numbers at the top of the screen were normal and did not depend on me looking at clusters of plumes. In fact, the framerates increased when I zoomed in on the cluster of plumes (indicating the wider landscape in general hurts more than smoke plumes).

The problem you fellas may be seeing is the framerate hits while the intense shooting is going on around your airfield. I think Oleg is calculating every little shell fired from surface AA. While the Niobes were shooting, I was getting about 3fps. When they stopped with the last P11 hitting the ice fps went back up to normal (about 14 but that is because multiple ships themselves hurt framerates *severely*--try it).

(You can set ships on ice...don't tell Oleg's team that though./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif )

Please be aware of what you are doing. You may regret it later if we get rid of long burning smoke and we still have the same problems. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

As for the whines about "eye-candy," be aware that smoke plumes are very visible from the air. This is a realistic and immersive affect we are witnessing.

And we are all agreed that the general battlefield below is so barren and sterile that we need as much as can to remind us that there is a larger battle waging beyond our own dogfight cockpit.

One thing I would like to see that currently isn't there.

Seems I'm stuck on trains lately..LOL..but when you attack the engine (steam btw) no huge cloud of steam issues forth when your rounds pierce the boiler..check footage from the 357th yoxford boys P51's in europe and check out some of the shots from their gun cams as they hit train locomotives with their guns..when the boiler went there was a rather large cloud of steam that was released from the locomotive, not only through the stack but also through the holes the .50s made

plump is right, the smoke plumes would look better if they'd have different shapes.

I therefor humbly ask Maddox to give us 3 or 4 different smoke plumes for the burning aricraft!

Thank you!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I had some seriously reduced frame rates with 10+ smoke columns in a massive single player mission the other day. Unfortunately the ntrk-video I had recorded was somehow corrupted and can't be displayed at all. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

So I just did some "lab test" with this mission (http://home.arcor.de/rayluck/sturmovik/smoke.zip), where 28 Mig-3 collide with Mount Krasnopup. Most of the times I watch it the frame rate doesn't rise at all after the flames have stopped. At one time it doubled, though.

So I am a bit helpless now.

BTW the smoke columns do move slightly in the wind.

Crashing them into mountains. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif Will try it. Thanks!

Maybe there is more to the smoke pillars than just "smoke pillars." I dunno. For me, I have not been able to get smoke pillars to reduce framerate except by sitting inside a burning aircraft on the ground.
