Since 4.08 this planes' FM is vastly improved.

Anyone else flying an old favorite these days?

And also, How many planes do you fly most regularly?

In other words - if you had to select your first 5 planes...which ones are they?

For myself it is (in no particular order)

The Gladiator (J8A)
The Wildcat (any)
The Bf109(e version mostly)
The Bf110G2
The I16 (both)

There are many others - but those are my top 5

I mainly fly the Emils but this week have been dabbling in the Tomahawk IIa and the P40E. I may get adventurous and branch out into the 109 F-series but I have my doubts about them, to say nothing of the horrid G's and, shudder Kurfurst. Must try the P-38 now that it's supposed to be all uber and everything.

Yeah - I used that plane alot just before PF was released and before we knew whether or not there would be a landing signal officer (LSO) included on the carriers....sadly they were not.

But the little Buffalo was a fun little plane to fly and with all those early USN skins out there courtesy of our community skin artists...it looks cool too.

Hey Bearcat - yer almost a US only kinda guy - looks like the 109 and the Yaks are just tokens...lol

Some of the Japanes planes are alot of fun - like the Rufe....you haven't landed until you've landed on water. Try going up on the Rufe one time...

The point I guess I was going for here is that - with all these planes to fly, and all the oppinions about the 'what ifers' and the 'fantasy stuff' and whatnot....I'll bet most people have only a handfull of planes they actually fly with regularity.
Another handful they fly with rare to medium regularity, and a bunch that they have flown once or never - either just to see what other people are talking about or because they refuse to fly "enemy" planes or "fantasy stuff"

That leads to the last point - that some people "feel" ('cause Tagert loves that term) that there are too many planes in this sim - and that that causes there to be less fidelity to all of them...sort of a watering down or averaging out of the global FM's in the sim....

Personally - I think that inspite of the numbers - all of these planes have plenty of individuality and seperation of characteristics between them. And - since the community is so large and diverse, you would have a hard time paring it down to everyones satisfaction, no?

For my part - I'm glad that Oleg was ambitious and made this effort instead of just focusing on one or two planes from each participant country. It made this sim extraordinary didn't it?

However, the beauty of this sim and the vast number of flyables is the opportunity to give other planes a chance and find out which planes we like best by flying them, instead of making the decision by some other, less pure method.

I'm maybe not stating my point as clearly as I'm thinking it, but I've gotten a kick out of the planes I've been surprised by. I was most surprised by how fun it is to fly the little I-16. I'd also given the He 111 a shot, and decided that the Il-2 was about as big of plane as I cared to fly. Then, I took the A-20C for a hop, and it turned out to be one of my favourites as well. Other favourites for me are the IARs and the La-5FN. I proably wouldn't have bought a sim that featured just those planes, but now I think it would be hard to buy a sim without my new favourites. I think that's one of the best things about this sim; it brings awareness and intrest to many about planes they never would have looked at otherwise.

There are so many "novelty" planes available to fly, including the Rufe, the rocket planes, the Mistel, all the "what-if" planes, etc. So many of these are just a hoot to take up for fun.

I fly all planes in the game - as many as possible. Well, I am limited to those available on online servers because I only fly online. However I tend to lean against the first half of the war, earlier is better. That doesn't mean I shy the 46 planes, they're great fun IMO.

If I had to pick a top 5, it'd be in no particular order:
P-40
Ki-61
Bf-110G

I remember looking at the box of one of the CFS sims and reading - only 11 flyable planes????!!! I couldn't understand why someone would buy it. I was brought up [in the sim world] on a steady diet of IL2 and expansions so it never occurred to me that other sims would be so restricted in scope. BOB will be tough for many fans, I think. I'm okay though - I fly the Emil.

I forgot the G.50, what a sweet ride, an absolute dog in most way yet very nice ride - no fuel injection, dives like a feather, climbs like a brick. The guns are shooting overcooked macaronis with bechamel sauce, it's hilarious to shoot with lead at someone because they are actually flying away from the bullets. The pilot is so short in cockpit you can only look up. Yet some pilots prefer to pull a flat turn against it, the only way you can lose against a G.50. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I don't really fly any particular planes all the time... I just look at the server's list and pick one, or look at the objectives for the mission, see what role needs more people and go for that... but if these planes are available I usually pick one of them:

F4U any
P47 any
Spit VIII

on the japanese side I usually take the zeke... lol

I tend to fly a wide variety depending on whatevers on the map and what side needs more people, I usually prefer a fighter bomber, so I can attack any ground targets and engage in a few scraps on the way back if needed.
After checking my stats for the past few months my top five most flown aircraft seem to be:

P-40M (fairly unsuprising really, I'm a sucker for punishment and it's about the only earlyish plane that isnt a dedicated bomber that can haul a decent bomb load, uber ship killer)
Hurricane (which I was a little suprised at, probably because there are so many maps with Hurricane lately, hard work, but can ruin the day of many lufties who underestimate it)
P-39Q and N variants (for when I need a break from the P-40, but still need to feel disadvatanged for the challenge)
BF109F4 (I just love flying it, probably the only aircraft I actually have a positive kill/death ratio in http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif)
FW190A various variants (ugly and not really that nice to fly unless cruising at highspeed, but it gets the job done rather effectively)

Thanks Boom....I was looking for a way to see if we could look at everyones "short-list" if you will, and get a snapshot of just how much the selection that Oleg and Co. provided was appreciated.

It would be nice to see what the main Russian forumites as well as the German folks would list so we could get a more complete picture, but this is interesting.

I know, for myself just as for many others, it is not too easy to select just five, but as much as I like to use the whole sim....there really are just 5 or so that I seem to fly the most.

It is a nice feature of this sim though to have so much more right here at my finger tips if I want it (or if I read an article or book about some plane or theater of operation or some battle that piques my interest) THAT seems to me to be the real hidden value in this product. Probably the one aspect that will give it the lasting value it deserves...just my oppinion.

Whats yours?

Lol - whenever I am having a low self esteem day...there is nothing better for changeing that mood than loading a Ta-183 with X-4's and blasting a formation of Pe8's outta the sky.

Even if I have to select 'empty' loads on them sos I can saddle up on 'em...they have a lotta guns, don't they?

Yes heywoood,5 aircraft is tuff to point out of the great selection we have, but I think it's a great focal point for the purpose of this thread.....I like to build missions, when I'm flying off-line this is what I enjoy.

QM.FM-2 taking on KI-21,[yah I know it's weak but it build's my confidence....o.k?]

F4U patrolling over IWO-JIMA while the landing is taking place.

Taking the A20-BUBBLE NOSE out for a straffing run over Manchuria

I get quite a lot of enjoyment for my 39.95

Yes - the ol' Hosenose or a Wildcat shooting carrier traps over either Iwo or Chi Chi Jima...have you flown around there?

Set the time for late afternoon - partly cloudy - set three or four carriers and an escort - load the decks with F4u's or 'Cats and just a couple of waypoints for the AI to follow.

Very serene

Yes it was - sadly I lost that screenshot in a reformatting recently....

My other ideal setting is Kurland winter map - aways late afternoon, with a couple of Bf110's or a vic of I-16's just patrolling around...maybe watching a ground battle or escorting some Li-2's

The FMB goes a long way toward maintaining my interest also...its kinda like laying out a scale model train environment...placing a few buildings and fences by the field or some trees along the river, the odd truck or convoy rolling along...maybe a fire burning in an old farmhouse near the airfield.

That can be pretty relaxing.

BF 109 F4: It's slow in acceleration, but it is manueverable I've recently started flying it because of Flatspin's Campaign.

La 5: It's always beem a fave of mine. I guess you could call it my ego stroker.

FW 190 A4: It seems to do almost everything well. And it just looks "bit-chin."

Hurricaine: I've always like the cockpit for this. It's an underappreciated pit. Well done to whomever made it! It's a stable gun platform, and I just find it fun.

Tempest: She flys like a pig, but with patience she's devestating.

Mc 202: I thought I'd try this one again because she's sexy. Performance wise I'm not very confident in this at all. Visibility really makes SA difficult. It's scary when you hear a plane nearby and cant see it.

(Yeah, I know it's six, but I thought I'd throw a bone to the Mc 202 in hopes to get others to try something other than the predictably flown 109s and P51s)
