im wonderin just how close to an escort you can get, and still check your 'depth under keel' without being noticed.

i find myself doin alot of patrols around the southern approaches (BF15) which can get quite shallow, i dont want to bring DCs upn me just cos i check the depth.

cheers.

Never really tried it so couldn't say if checking the depth is heard by destroyers. Also didn't you know, destroyers are nearly deaf, you can go to ahead flank right near destroyers to escape, give it a try it always works http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

I wish there were a map feature that would show depths in the shallows. Using the depth finding device sends a ping which can be picked up....

I try to use map contours of different colors to check depth.....not too accurate.

but you get about the same info a german kaleun of the day had.

if u have free flight u can chack it manually or u can "fly" away go underwater and send it out if u hear it they can hear it but as i guess many of u sail with 100 or 90% realsim so thats probaly turned off

Though I haven't been brave enough to fully confirm this, I have at least once checked depth less then 1000 meters from a Armed Trawler and he didn't hear it.

There seems to be a good chance the game escorts don't hear that sort of thing. Test at your own risk.

Generally though I just stick to deep water. Hitting the bottom at ahead slow and in a full dive usually doesn't to that much damage.

Well, I'm not sure but I doubt that a lowly armed trawler would be equipped with the same sort of hydrophone gear that a "real" escort would probably have, so they'd probably not hear it at all and even if they did hear it through the hull they wouldn't likely be able to tell anything about how close it was or where it came from, so there wouldn't be much reason for it to react in any particular way anyway.

Well they could start Zig-Zaging.

Furthermore I was close to directly behind the trawler (say 150-160) and the winds were at 15.

I did say that you should test their hearing at your own risk.

Though I do depth ping sometimes 13 KM ahead of a convoy if the map shows that it isn't going to be really really deep. You are perfectly fine doing it that far away at least.

well, I suppose they could, but even if they could figure out that the u-boat whose ping they heard was actually near them, what self-respecting U-boat is gonna waste a torpedo on a lowly armed trawler so why bother to zig zag at that point? Besides, it's probably too hard to catch fish when your boat is zig-zagging all over the place http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

700m close to a V&W.

I've tested it because I wanted to sink the only escort to a convoy I was attacking.

It was late 1941 and the Black Swan was a mear 1500m away on my stern, and pointed towards me. I started pinging away with my Atlas Achlot and the Frigate kept circling!

I don't know if this will apply in the later stages of the war, but we all know that the A.I. escorts are deaf, blind, stupid and severely inexperienced from 1939-mid 1942.

Two quick points:
1. I'd also like to see some sort of map tool that would allow you to get a depth by moving the cursor.

2. Usually as a matter of routine I check depth under keel early in an attack set-up so I have some idea what I have to work with, unless I am well out away from the coast and can assume I can crash dive without hitting the bottom.

i have been too worried that they would hear me , so i dont use it when i am too close to warships.

when you "crash dive" - what is the depth that that takes you to?

When you crash dive, the boat gos to ahead flank and levels out at 70 metres, but you can always click on the depth metre to stop at another depth.
