so was the 410 that much better than a 210?
what about compared to a ju88? (i wouldnt think so)
was its use widespread?

If you read Night Fighter by CF Rawnsley he describes how the Me-410 was a tougher customer for their Mosquitos to intercept as compared to the earlier He-111 and Ju-88 bombers. IIRC it was also often equipped with tail warning radar which made the usual stern interception difficult. Apparently its cruising speed was pretty high too.

interesting, ive read about the 210 in messerchmitt's book and how it was one of his most frustrating projects, but i never read upon the 410...

Don't if you want a book about the 410. The passages that deal with the 410 are all about how frustrating it was to down the 410 (at night), even with a Mossie. Hard to catch, watch the barbettes etc.

The 410 came from 1943 onwards, the main difference being aerodynamic changes (longer fuselage, larger tail, intoduction of leading edge slats) compared to the vanila 210 to improve handling, and the use of the much more powerful DB 603A (1750 PS, medium alt engine on 410A) and 603E (1800 PS, high alt engine for 410B versions), and not much else.
Speed was quite ok for such a plane, 630kph or IIRC, going from memory, about as fast at the contemporary 109G-6 or Mossie VI (though the latter is probably faster at SL). Compared to the Ju 88, it's much much faster, have heavy forward firing armament and yet a good coverage of it's rear hemispare. Try the Hungarian-produced Me 210Ca in the game, it's very close to the 410 - it had the aerodynamic improvements but is flying with DB 605s and not DB 603s.

The 210/410 were more like intended to be fast bomber roles with also being able to perfrom as a heavy fighter, a change of concept from the 110. They were used like this way a lot, as well as in recce roles and for a while until escorts appeared, as 'Pulkzest├┬Ârer', literally destroyer of heavy bomber formations. Off the top of my head, around 1500 were produced in total, so it saw quite some use, but never managed to replace Ju 88s and Bf 110s in their role, serving parallel to them.

By all means a very nice plane, and would be huge fun to be flown online, unfortunately the rear barbette guns are creating difficulties in being modelled in the sim due to their complex operation.

Anyone who's interested in the most comprehensive development history of the 110/210/410, should get Petrick/Mankau's 'Me 110,210,410. The Messerschmitt destoyers and their rivals'. It's also published in English. It's price tag is high, but definietely worths it, as it has many extra material and really goes into detail. It's also a great book to see the reasons behind how decisions were made back then..

BTW, that video showing the operation of the radiator flaps is just brilliantly detailed, I liked it a lot. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
