View Full Version : Assassin's Creed Odyssey - Crashes during gameplay

I've seen people with similar issues but during startup only. But in my case, I played the game for about 20 minutes and then it freezes and crashes. Tried playing the game again, 20 minutes passed, crashed again. Is something wrong with my video drive or my .dll?? Appreciate those who comment with possible solutions.

Hey Ian_Dafuq! Are your drivers updated? Can you please try these steps (http://ubi.li/mae8v) and let me know if they help? Also, can you post your specs below? Thanks!

Same thing here. The game crashed quite frequently (during gameplay or when transition between cinematic and gameplay).
I've got the last Nvidia Driver.

My config :

i7-6700 K
48 Gb of RAM
GTX 1080 Ti
Samsung SSD 960 PRO M.2 PCIe NVMe 512 Go

EDIT : Ok, unplayable... the game is crashing like every 5 minutes now...http://image.noelshack.com/minis/2018/40/2/1538443037-mine.png (http://www.noelshack.com/2018-40-2-1538443037-mine.png)

A user gave me a tip : Play the game in windowed mode. It's indeed working (but it's very FPS consuming ! I went from 44 fps to 31fps....)

I've already opened a ticket after trying all the steps suggested unsuccessfully, but I've also noticed that I have the same problem with AC Origins, which I played without major issues on my old lower specs laptop. After researching on different forums I've found out that many people still have this problem. It isn't clear whether it actually has to do with Ubisoft or not, but I really hope you can provide us a solution, especially after buying the Ultimate Edition and not being able to play it.

I crash during transitions on startup don't even make it to the first into or cutscene,. Running latest nvidia driver GTX 1080 and no idea what is up.

Ditto, I guess that's what you get for ordering the Ultimate Edition so you can get frustrated with the bugs till they are actually fixed post launch :D

Game is choppy with High (default) settings. I lowered fog and volumetric cloud settings since Ubisoft games always has CPU/GPU issues when it comes to volumetric presets at game launch. Still the frame rates tanks even in open less populated areas, hell, even in a cave!! And after 15-20 minutes of play, games crashes in weird ways, sometimes to desktop, sometimes machine freezes entirely and only a hard boot can fix it. At times I get a BSOD (MEMORY_MANAGEMENT & VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR).

So I got a bit scared and thought it might be a faulty GPU/RAM Module. I fired up Origins at Very High settings and played for almost an hour with no issues. My guess is, it's not optimized for lower/mid level GPUs and might have CPU optimization issues (as always). Odyssey should at least run at the default settings, but it doesn't run even after lowering the settings.

My Config:

OS: Win 10 Pro x64
CPU: Intel i7 2600k
GPU: EVGA GTX 780 FTW Edition (3GB)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB)
HDD: Samsung 850 EVO 1TB
PSU: Corsair HX1050

Having the same issue, came here for answers. Not sure what I expected beyond those silly trouble shooting tips (run as admin as a fix? come on, really?) I am getting crashes every 15 minutes or so. I am quite certain, given the pervasiveness of the issue on Reddit, that it is something on their end - not all of ours.

Same issue here, I can not even get past the Warning screen. Hopefully they find a fix asap. Definitely regret paying more for this then I should have.

Another user gave me a fix for the crash.

Go to settings and put the game in "borderless" mode (not full-screen).

Worked perfectly for me then.

Hello, same problem here. I started to play yesterday thanks to the golden edition, however, I encountered an error by which the game turns off at random moments. After disabling, a window appears allowing me to send an error report to Ubisoft, but nothing else.

My laptop:

Same problem here. Crashing every 5 to 10 minutes, sometimes even after 1 or 2 minutes.

Laptop Lenovo Legion Y520
i7-7700HQ
GTX 1060 MaxQ
16GB RAM

As you can see my system cannot afford performance handicaps on default High settings.

I will try using borderless setting and drop an update here.

I managed to fix this issue by changing to borderless display mode instead of full screen. Game runs quite good now. Still there are frame rate drops at 1440p, but otherwise its quite smooth. Hopefully all the kinks will be removed in a week or 2 by Ubisoft.

I ran Uplay as administrator (not sure if ti affects the crashes) and set borderless setting as stephanberger4 suggested.

Have been playing for an hour without any crashes. No significant performance change noted until now.

Anyone experiencing random crashes should try this.

I'm having the same problem. The game constantly freezing after 2-3 minutes into the game. Sometime the computer will boot me out and force close the game.
I've updated everything I can think of. Game drivers, PC OS, verifying game files. Everything. To no avail.

I have already submitted a open case for this matter. Please check my case! Case Number: 07081973

Please don't make me regret by paying premium price for Ultimate Edition for this game. :(

Mine crashes during the start up of the game just after Ubisoft logo appears. I'm using an Xbox One not a PC. I've tried every bit of troubleshooting I can think of and more but it still crashes every time. I've never gotten past a crash during startup.

I wrote that another thread but everybody should see. Guys i think i find the solution. I downgrade my nvidia gpu driver to 411.70 to 411.63. And game is smoother and no crash! You should try that one. Maybe not a solution for everyone but some people can use it.

Btw i can play game before downgrade but crashes like in 30 min. You don't need to play with borderless screen.

I have the same problem as many here, playing on laptop. The game keeps crashing when I play it on Fullscreen. When I play it on Borderless it stops crashing. I noticed the fps is lower with Borderless (Fullscreen gives more fps for some reason) and that's why I want to play it on Fullscreen. Can Ubi look into this? I want to play this game on Fullscreen without it crashing all the time. I didn't pay for Ultimate edition to have these problems. Had the exact same problem with Origins by the way.

I set the game into windowed mode and it really helped. Unfortunately, I noticed fps drops - earlier I had over 30 fps, and now it drops down to 20. I'm disappointed, I paid a lot of money for a product that I can not use normally.

1. Crashes a lot
The game is crashing a lot, can also agree that it happens in gameplay every 20-30 minutes.
In photo mode extremly, every 1-2 minutes. Had around 10 crashes in 2 hours. This should not happen in this release state
and it looks for that the preorder system is more usefuil for Ubisoft to get 'latest' beta testers ..
I played origins cbefore without any problems in same configuration.
Last Nvidia drivers are installed, this standard hint should not be necessary.

2. Gameplay Freeze at let's begin & solution to come over:
First complete gameplay freeze was after 300 scene with 'begin' scene with 2 opponents in front.
Here the movement buttons did not work (but 'Q' for defeat worked), but gameplay was trherefore stucked.
Also trying to begin with a new game did not help - again 'stuck'.
Fortunately I had a xbox controller available and plugged this in - this worked, I could move and fight and got out of this stucky moment.
After this I plugged the controller ou again and after this the gameplay continued normally without f'frozen' awsd keys..
Luckily I had a controller at home .. ;-)

Better stay in 1703 as old nvidia drivers cannot be installed on 1809. I found some players saying old drivers like 391 can run the game without crashes. I guess it's a windows 10 or driver problem, since I used to run Origins in an old laptop with GTX 960m (no crash)..

On a other forum I did read if your CPU does not support avx you cant play the game that what a support did say and that should be a reason that the game crash. And there say dev team is not working on a solution. Or removing the part that you need a avx support CPU. So far I now the Intel i3 it and i7 all support avx. Still weird that no body from dev give any respon on it. And Al's.ost 50% of the people who did buy that game and get a 3 days early access have this problem. And I heard that not only people on pc have this problem bud people who have it on xbox have it to. Dont now if ps have it.

Well, I reinstalled the 411.63 drivers and updated Windows to 1809 and nothing changes.
The game systematically crashes in full screen.

i played on max settings for 7 hours yesterday oct 2nd and on max graphics with a 2600 3.44 ghz i7 processor and a R9390x by msi graphics card 16g ram and 8g vram, so today oct3rd i press play same as before xept now it crashes constantly on startup lil logo splash creen and then crash, followed by send report screen, so i update drivers got latest win 10 update and try disable/ enable non windows services, and i mean i had flawless gameplay on oct 2nd no crash no issue no freezing, used xbox 1 controller on my pc,, but oct 3rd the game is a total mess constant crash on startup admin or not uplay or steam, i have not found a working solution or even a reason, my guess is they made some update that they didnt post about and are covering it up, could have to do with early access or with release date issues or any other reason why they could potential implement a hidden update? but it feels like some sort of update related issue gone wrong. just dont know if windows or driver or ubisoft side

EDIT: it looks like at least for steam users I went ahead and checked for file integrity and it found 2 files worth 8.5 gigs to reacquire for some reason, may or may not fix someones issue This in fact fixed my issue the question is how the hell those files got missing, if i touched nothing since my pc was off lol....

I just had a crash. It was a BSOD (Memory_Management error). My specs: i7-7700K, GTX 1070, 16 GB ram, nvidia driver 416.16, Windows 10 ver 1803.
Checking event logs I found this error, a few minutes before the actual crash:
"Windows successfully diagnosed a low virtual memory condition. The following programs consumed the most virtual memory: ACOdyssey.exe (7072) consumed 10176962560 bytes, firefox.exe (8120) consumed 665477120 bytes, and firefox.exe (10804) consumed 625041408 bytes."

I played 8.5 hours of this game on the first day with no crashes or freezes. After I first got to Phokis, so the next region after the meeting with Nikaloas, I started crashing randomly every 15-20 minutes. I have updated Windows 10 and all my drivers. Sometimes the crashes give me error report requests, but usually it just goes to my desktop. Every time it happens the game freezes for a second or two and then closes to desktop. I'm wondering if it might be related to the Phokis area somehow.

I have the same issue on my Gigabyte Aero 15x I bought last sprint. AC Odyssey runs perfectly on my 3-year old desktop. My setup and save games are identical, and the only software different is the Gigabyte utilities. I have done the MSCONFIG run not other software change, the run in windowed mode change, the run UPlay as administrator change... all of them in fact. Nothing has stopped the crash after 5 to 20 minutes of the game running. I don't even have to play. All I have to do is run the bench mark repeatedly and the game will crash. One difference is that every once in awhile I'll get a BSOD instead of a "standard" crash. So I analysed the crash dump file. Here is what I got. The issue is definitely code within the AC Odyssey executable. Maybe the developers can use this information to narrow down the scope of the issue. I am at least lucky to have one system on which I can play the game.

The game seems to be more unstable after 1.0.3 on PC. I played for 10 hours straight for almost a week when it was on 1.0.2.
After updating to 1.0.3, the game freezes after 20-30 minutes of gameplay. It starts out fine and the frame rates keep dropping gradually after 15 minutes and totally freezes at 25-30 minutes of gameplay. It's not even a problem with the NPCs, because I played at night time when there are too few NPCs. I don't know whats wrong with the new patch but its frustrating to keep hard booting the machine every 30 minutes because I can't even seem to Alt+Tab out of the game or start the task manager with Alt+Ctrl+Del. Machine totally freezes. Origins runs smoothly, but Odyssey does not. I even lowered the game settings so I have a 300-400 MB VRAM free out of the 3GB VRAM that I have on my GTX 780 FTW Edition. All drivers are up to date, GPU and windows drivers.

I hope they fix it soon. Waiting for patches is frustrating, especially when you get early access by paying a lot more for the Ultimate Edition. Definitely not buying the Gold or the Ultimate edition next time. It's like we're the game testers.

After 54 hours of playing on patch 1.0.3, my game started freezing. I force closed the game but my mouse pointer is moving in slow motion across the screen and I cannot left click anything. I force restart my PC and launch the game again. After 10 minutes of playing it freezes again forcing me to do the same thing mentioned in the previous sentence. I launch the game again and I play for another 10 minutes and the game hard crashes to desktop with an error report to send to Microsoft this time. All of my drivers are up to date and I haven't made any changes to my PCs hardware or software in the entire 54 hours I've played this. My PC specs are:

Quick update. I played for a hour after posting this and the game seems fine. The only change to my system I did was disabling my 3rd monitor in Nvidia control panel and putting new batteries in the Xbone controller. I was on the quest Kleon gives you to rescue a guy from a marble quarry. I finished the quest as quickly as possible and no problems since completing.

Was all good up until a couple of days ago (had logged about 45 hours trouble free) then start to have crashes every few minutes.

It is now unplayable. :(

Am running ACO normal version (not deluxe or anything) through Steam big picture mode and normal steam.
I tried borderless, windowed in both nvidia exp and in the game settings to no avail.
Also tried all windowed using borderlessgaming app to no avail.
Tried reinstalling uplay and disabling any kind of cloud syncing/notification also to no avail
Tried turning off the Xbox sharing thing to no avail.

Am completely out of ideas and very frustrated considering this worked fine and then I come back one day and it does not. Since it worked I did not install/update any major things (knowingly anyway!).

How the hell have they not fixed this issue, this game is literally unplayable. I stealth through forts, so it does take me some time, and I'm crashing before I can even finish one. It's ****ing ******ed. I have an 8700k / 1080ti, this SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING. Waste of god damn money.

Hi , just wanted to add about how my game is also crashing every 20 -40 minutes.

System specs Windows 10 1803 17134.345
Intel 8700k stock speeds
MSI MEG z390 Godlike motherboard 7810v11 Bios

OS on Crucial 525gb m2 ssd
Games on Micron 1100 2TB Sata SSD
BenQ 32" 4k monitor

Drivers are up to date according to MSI support website and other manufacturers

I have verified the game thru Ubisoft launcher, I tried running the game in full screen mode 4k, windowed mode @2560x1440 and then in 2560x1600, I reset all the game settings and it still crashes no matter what settings its at.

Does Ubi even come here and post or try to help ?

This game crashes more often then any game Iíve ever played. Even my heavily modded Fallout 4 is more stable then Odyssey. Iím extremely dumbfounded how Ubisoft released a game in this condition. With the amount of game breaking bugs and constant crashing itís baffling how it was even released at all. Also doesnít help that Ubi hasnít done s*** to remedy any of the issues and has barely even acknowledged them. This is a total disappointment on a game that would be amazing if it was actually completed.

Game freezes after 15-30 minutes of gameplay; have to do a hard shutdown of PC.
W10 Pro 64bit
i7 7800X

Samsung 970 EVO 250GB (OS)
Intel 525S 256GB (Odyssey)
GTX 1080Ti
Samsung 3840x2160 60Hz TV

Game runs without this issue on my other rig:
W7 Pro 64bit
i7 6850K
32GB 3200Mhz RAM
Samsung 970 EVO 250GB (OS)
WD Blue 500GB SSD (Odyssey)
GTX 980Ti
Asus 3440x1440 100Hz monitor

Also Assassin's Creed origins runs fine all day long on the system where Odyssey is locking up. I also tested Hitman to see if there were any reproduce-able issues, but that game ran fine as well. Using the 11OCT18 Nvidia drivers.

it got worst after patch update... but i'm feeling it has to do with overlays... don't know what overlay is doing this, since i have de riva tuner, uplay, discord and steam overlays dropping messages on screen at the same time... i'll play with them deactivated 1 by 1 till i get the one that's doing this... or till i give up...

Hello friends! If Odyssey is crashing for you, we first recommend to try running the game in borderless window mode. We also recommend disabling any extra background applications (https://support.ubi.com/en-GB/Faqs/000025721/Disabling-Background-Application/) in case of software conflicts. Additionally, we have this performance FAQ (https://support.ubi.com/en-US/Faqs/000037492) for any crashes that happen during the game.

If you've done all these steps already, please submit your MSINFO and dxdiag files (https://support.ubi.com/en-US/Faqs/Details/kA030000000emSbCAI?name=how-to-submit-dxdiag-and-msinfo-files) for investigation on a support ticket. Once you've submitted your ticket, please provide me with your ticket number so I can look back into it for you.

hi, i still get these freezes regularely after the newest patch with the first dlc.
already playing in borderless.
we cant create tickets, because the page is reloading all the time, no matter which browser.
it would be nice if this will get patched asap, because its the only game this is happening, origins was fine, too.
please advise.
i exported the two files you think you can work with.

@kickassezCH,

If you're still experiencing issues creating a support case, can you please clear your browser cache by following this guide (https://support.ubi.com/en-gb/faqs/000025585/Browser-troubleshooting/).

Once you have completed these steps, can you also enable 3rd party cookies.

A guide to this can usually be found online.

If you're still experiencing issues, please try a different browser.

@DaenKan Thanks! I noticed that you have 8 GB of RAM available, but only 2.74 GB currently available. I'd recommend these PC steps (https://support.ubi.com/en-us/faqs/000025947). I'd also recommend running a memtest as well. Let me know if this helps!

The game run quite well for me but last 2 weeks frequent crashes have happened, and it seems to become more regular the whole time. I'm already playing with more limited graph settings and updated drives as well as optimizing the game settings in the NVIDIA screen. This is quite sad as I'm really enjoying the game but not having to restart and load 2-3 times per session.

Try to play without your controller. For me it worked. I played with mouse and keyboard without any freeze.
And if you wanna use your controller, change to full batteries. The game doesn't like nearly deepleted controller batteries.

I contacted support, and they ask me to run memtest86, I do 9hrs, 0 errors. They're saying it's still likely an issue on my end so I linked this and the other forum post, as well as one of consoles even having similar issues.

I find it horribly distasteful for them to brush the issue off on to the consumer. I work in IT and have been building for over 13 years. My hardware is fine, can pass any stress test for well over 24 hours as well as any error test without even a slight hiccup. The PC is also used for heavy workloads that tax my CPU and RAM much more intensively then the game, but the game still only wants to use 4gb of my 13-14gb of available ram and run up insanely high virtual memory load.
This is obviously a game issue and they're just ignoring it. I poured through change logs, nothing about fixes toward crashes/hangs/freezes in game. I encourage every one to contact support, send msinfo and dxdiag files and demand that the information be forwarded to the dev team. Only way we're ever going to get a solid fix.

When you set your computer to High Performance in the Power Plan it automatically turns on disk write caching which only makes you marginally faster (maybe) but at the risk of data loss. It can also cause weird memory/disk access errors. I have a hunch these same errors are also causing the 'missing quest" problems which is also seemingly random in nature .... I turned it (back) off this weekend and so far no crashes ..... What irks me is I had made sure it was off when I first set up Windows a because I use a lot of USB sticks and hard drives and write caching can cause data lose and never thought that Microsoft might secretly enable it behind my back without telling me (However it isn't surprising as it's a Microsoft trademark for about 25 years)

To turn off write caching go to Control Panel -> Device Manager and click on 'Disk Drives' and then right click each drive, choose the 'Policy" tab and clear the check boxes on each drive. Reboot just to make sure it takes and then try running the game ......

This will also make it less likely to bork a removable (USB) drive when you unplug it or it get accidentally unplugged and also protect from data loss from a power outage or a blue screen crash ....

My game recently started crashing to desktop without any errors. I've played around 150 hours without any issues, but after starting Legacy of the First Blade my game crashed around 20-30 times. Sometimes it crashes after a few hours, but at the moment I can't play it for more than 5-10 minutes without a crash. I haven't installed any new software on my computer or changed any hardware. I have tried playing in borderless window mode and disabling uplay overlay but without any luck.

Here are a few things that helped me:
1) disable UPlay and Steam overlay
2) play in borderless window mode
3) update all your drivers
4) disable auto sync with cloud in UPlay
5) probably what helped me the most - perform a clean boot! After this I only had sporadic crashes every 10 or so hours. Just a note that I had the same issues with AC Origins as with Odyssey. So it's probably something wrong at their end, maybe something with UPlay?!

I've posted what fixed random crashes for me before but it tends to get ignored.

"Just gonna throw out a suggestion that worked for me, i was 80hrs in to my play-through when the game started crashing constantly and occasionally blue-screening my PC. Upon inspecting the crash .dmps generated by windows, they all mentioned the game was attempting to read restricted / non-paged memory. knowing this i changed my windows Page-file settings from 'automatically managed by windows' to a custom size with the min size being set 1gb (1024mb) and max being 3x my RAM. (i have 16gb so i set it at 49152mb you probably don't need to set it this high but win10 wont actually use that much unless its required)

As soon as i changed this the crashing was resolved straight away and I've managed to finish the game without a crash since.

to find the page file settings go to 'this PC> right click properties> advanced system settings> performance settings> advanced tab> and click change under virtual memory'"

If anyone with crashing issues want to also test this, i suspect the game has some issues with the way Windows manages the system page-file the game seems to attempt to read restricted or unsigned memory and crash.

I have the following problem with Assassin's creed Odyssey and Assassin's creed Origins.
The game freezes randomly (sometimes freezes after five minutes, sometimes after two hours). But it's not a typical freeze, when the application stops responding. The picture freezes as if you stopped the time, but the music continues to play, I can move the camera, I can get into the settings.
When I investigating this problem, I found that this problem occurs, when the game tries to load or write data from / to the disk (when it freezes, it always displays the logo to save or load data). The game also froze during game saving.
But the biggest problem is, that the only way to continue, is to hard restart my PC. I can switch to applications running in the background using Alt-Tab, but no new application can be started. I tried using the Task Manager to terminate the ACOdyssey.exe process, but failed, and Task Manager also stopped responding. The only option is to hard restart my PC.
On a forum I read, that it helped move the game files to another disk. I did that, but the problem continues, but when load from SATA SSD, the problem is less common than on Samsung 960 Pro NVMe.
I have Windows 10 (version 1809), which I mainly use for gaming and Windows 7, which I use for work. The problem occurs on both systems.
I have no problem with any other games or applications.

Actually there is more than one problem, one is a memory access problem (Tends to cause a hard crash and even a BSOD) and the other is a disk access problem like you are having (Locks up the video but you can still hear sound and can access menus and such)..... I fixed the disk access problem by turning off write caching which isn't really needed for SSD's and only gives you a slight edge on SATA 2 and 3 with a risk of data loss .... It's really something that was made for older IDE drives that were much slower and was held over by Microsoft for "legacy" applications for mainly businesses that still use IDE because they don't upgrade hardware as often.... I usually turn it off in the Control Panel when I set up a new machine but it got set again when I changed my Power Options from balanced to high performance and Microsoft decided to turn it back on behind my back without even notifying me. I didn't really expect Power Options to change my hard drive setup so it took me awhile to figure out what changed

Thanks for advice.
I turning off write caching for all drives in the system. Unfortunately, it didn't help. I tried to run assassin's creed origins from the NVMe SSD and this time the game froze in the ability menu. First, the mouse cursor disappeared and after while whole game was frozen. I could switch to applications running in the background, but I couldn't start the task manager. Then I had to restart my PC.

I am also having major problems with this game. I cant even get past the initial 300 battle without constant crashes. My crashes however freeze the PC or cause it to crash to BSOD. I have to physically power off the pc on the pc case itself. I have had to do this countless times and i am now getting repair warnings when switching on my pc as often the pc will switch on but my tv screen is saying no signal.

its doing my head right in.

wish i bought it on the xbox now.

i also noticed that my usb mobius headphones are really causing issues with this game as when i switch profiles on the headset the options screens flash each time i switch a profile. its very odd

I don't know if this will help anyone but I ran it on my brand new Alienware A51 and it was smooth as butter for 3 to 4 hours. The next day it started slowing down and crashing. Since its a new machine I realised whatever it was, is probably related to the controller software Im using. So I switched between DS3 to X360ce whatever and the crashes stopped. That input software is interferring with the game surprisingly.

Hope it helps.

So far, there is no clear solution to this problem. Every upgrade of Ubisoft official has modified some useless problems.

The question begins with the Assassin's creed Origins. It's always there. But it can't be solved.

Yea after disabling ds4 and using steams controller emulator it still crashes, it is a ****ing shame that this game just seems broken for some users, I have tried every "fix" ubisoft and others have said to try and nothing has worked, this is the only game that crashes for me this much, not even my heavily modded fallout 4 crashes this much and thats saying something. This game is a blast to play and i love getting immersed in it, however the crashes have detracted enough from the experience for me to stop playing which is a shame, I would have loved to pay for the dlc but I just cannot if it keeps crashing, and with no clear response from ubisoft its clear they do not really care.

I've seen people with similar issues but during startup only. But in my case, I played the game for about 20 minutes and then it freezes and crashes. Tried playing the game again, 20 minutes passed, crashed again. Is something wrong with my video drive or my .dll?? Appreciate those who comment with possible solutions.

u may try to install MV C++ 2015-2019( it's newest one, previous is only 2019) after that, although there still crash happen, but less and less, as it may raised from other source, what we can do is updates any necessary software. that is the one u can try and it do give some help to cure crash( not completely as i said above)

PS: u may need to uninstall 2019 C++ and 2017 etc for better compatibility( follow the pop up when in installation
