The best you can afford, simple really.

For what it's worth, I love my Radeon 9600pro.

Just make sure you go either ATI or NV and spend what you can properly afford.

9800 series if you can afford it.

If not look out for a second hand 9700pro. Superb card for what they can be bought for.

Stay away from all the nvidia FX series though.

Try here... http://www.pricewatch.com/ for a decent price.

Go here for some of the benchmark info... it is an older link..it doesnt have the 9800 Pro but if you go there and do a search ypou can find it.
http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20021218/vgacharts-02.html

I would go with an ATI9800Pro at least (or 9800 XT) with $1000 bucks to work with. Also either a XP3000 or an XP3200 or a XP3000 64 (or better)with an ASUS MB and a G of RAM. H@ll if I had THAT kind of Do Re Mi then I would also kick out the extra$100 and get a set of CH Pedals too. You figure the processor and MOBO will be @ $200-$400 depending on what you decide to get and the card will be from $275-$475 again depending on what you get. Either one from the greatest to the least will run FB like a champ (and probably any other game too..) and you shouldnt have to upgrade for at LEAST 3 years...especially if you go with the XT and the 64 setup. The 9800Pro256 is going for $340.... great card.

I just bought a GeForce FX5700 Ultra.

It absolutely rocks in FB at 1600 x 1200 x 32.

They cost about $170 in the US, I believe.

Check out this new article at Toms... posted today:

http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/index.html

If you can find an Nvidia GF4 Ti 4600 buy it. Newegg.com has an MSI one for $150. It doesn't support DX9, but IL2 isn't DX9. It is near the top of the new chart that compares cost versus frames per second.

As far as Nvidia versus ATI, it is simple. If you must have the very best card then get ATI. Along with the best performance you will also get the highest cost and the most number of bugs with some games.

I'll stick with Nvidia. The performance gains are minimal for ATI.

Its easy to get rated that high when the article in question has your endorsed card priced at $65.

Building over 10 sytems a month with nvidia and ati (from 9800xt/and5950Ufx to g2gts and radeon 9100), you can't go wrong with a r3xx-better drivers, more stable, better IQ, smaller pcb, and faster http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I have a 9800 which works wonderfully for me.. But I also have 2 gigs of ram with hyperthreading and a P4 3.2... So I dont have any bumps or bruises at the highest settings.

Try to sell your car to get more PC investment money... jk...

I would reccomend an ATI 9700 PRO or 9800 PRO to hold you over until we get mainstream PCIX graphics cards.

Oh yes. These tests are very telling. Top ATI card beats out the top Nvidia card by 3 whole frames per second.

I'd stay away from the ATI cards unless you enjoy tweaking every time you update your drivers. Also, if you trade up to a new card often enough to not need the warranty, ATI is a safe bet.

Otherwise, grab the best nvidia card you can afford.

If you go Nvidia dont go below a 5700Ultra...256 if possible.... or ATI like I said..a 9800Pro 128 at least. Im looking for all these cards to come down a bit in a month or two.
