In 1944 an abandonded German bomber flew on into England. This is an article about it from War Monthly, issue 34 pages 10-17.

The Bomber was a Do217M and the article has some interior photos of the plane, including many of the crew position.

I hope you find it interesting and useful.

a B 29 crew bailed out somewhere close to Iwo, a P 61 was sent to destroy it, as it stayed flying and had many hours of fuel left to go

part of the nose cockpit section was damaged, killing the pilot, the wounded co-pliot flying back from where it was hit, over Japan

it took ALL of the 61s 4x50cal AND 4x20mm ammo, but only then it slowly lost alt and finally crashed

I've read references before about pilotless aircraft used in WW2, were any used? I don't mean the V1 or V2s or Hagelkorns either, just straight up radio controlled full size bombers? Sorry I have a link, I'm sure it was kept very secret at the time...

That can be kinda confusing. My mother still has the front page of a 1944 newspaper proclaiming in large letters: PILOTLESS BOMBERS ATTACK LONDON!

this was the beggining of the V-1 cmpn and that was how they referred to them.

I heard a story about a crewless B-17 landing in England in 1940. Nothing was able to explain it.
