found out that its quite dangerous to shoot enemy ac at close range with german 30mm cannon, i managed to get some fragments from explosions on my engine=oils out, and some other damage too, there wasnt flying any parts from enemy AC, it just was quite close to me when i shot at him, did 30mm have rounds like this, i mean shrapnells and fragments? i thought it was mostly bases on high explosion shock, not on fragments. thin shelled rounds should not make heavy fragments which could penetrate ur engine hood and oils systems. i was bout 20m away form enemy AC and i took almost same amount of damage, no good http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

can the effective range of the fragments be decresed a bit or sumthign?

Buddy, 30 mm ammo IS devastating. I can't really speak about MK 108, but I worked with 30 mm ammo. I was a mechanic in Swedish Airforce, working on SAAB JA 37 Viggen. It's got a 30 mm cannon, an Oerlikon. Those rounds are like milkbottles, electricaly fired (static discharge also works!), every time I had to load the cannon I was sweating bullets. Ammo band weighed a couple of hundred kilos, with 150 rounds. Anyway, there are solid/AP bullets, HE bullets and training bullets. AP just makes a helluva hole in whatever it hits, HE goes boom and disintegrates the unfortunate target. I can emagine that one of these would also damage the plane that fired them, if you happened to be that close.

Cheers!

Well, flying little fragments and pieces from the target is not realistic, you must have big pieces. And also, we dont have for the time being proppeler damage modeland stuff. but coolers were very prone to damage. Even a little pebble could make it useless, what for a metal piece. There is even something more to it. When the target explodes, the explosion makes some parts stop flying forward but backwards instead, with a fair ammount of speed. In the same time, You are moving with some 500(at least) kph towards the pieces!!! To me they will be enough to give you trouble. Remember, "Bubi" Hartmann often got damaged because of shooting from a point blank range("wait until he fills your windshield") and the parts of the target would hit him.

Some things are worth fighting for...
And most of them wear mini skirts.

check this vid, it gives some idea of what kind of damage does 30mm cannon, versus 50cal penetration damage..

one hand grenade has bit more explosive content than 30mm mine round..
