Wow, good stuff. I was amused by the way the narrator rarely used the word "the" when talking about the internet. Sounded like he was talking about SKYNET or something.

"There is no body language, no intonation, no facial expression to help you know which way something ambiguous is meant."

With that in mind, just imagine what great humor we would be without right now--right here on these boards no less-- if not for the ambiguity of the internet. Just try to wrap your head around that.

"There's an interesting kind of restraint that you find, I mean there is not a lot of cursing or swearing, there's not a lot of personal cuts, there's not a lot of put-downs that one would expect to find. You know, there's not screens full of 'go to hell'..."

Times seem to have REALLY changed since then http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I see that carguy used the "I am serious" emoticon, so I guess he really needs some explanation of what is funny.

You see carguy, the video was aimed at explaining what the internet was like at the time. As technology moves forward and new advances are made...

...what's that you say? You were joking?

Geez, and here I am wasting my time explaining the humor. Oh, if only the internet were not so rife with ambiguity. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

*edit* Guess I'd better include the "I am joking" emoticon so that everyone understands that I am joking.

About what time frame was this video news story made?? It seemed as though it was the late eighties maybe? Any ideas? It must have been early because it was before much in the way of graphics.
I just saw stuff typed on monochrome monitors!!

Juxtaposed are some other comments that remain timeless:

This is not really funny in a joke context, but funny as seeing a guy in a suit with a mobile phone the size of a brick.

It`s about how mysterious the `internet` was before we got used to it. I remember wondering what exactly is the `web`?, where is the internet?

Many people then were confused by what `internet` was like 2 old ladies who travelled to London to find the `web` address!

Things have changed so radically in 20 years. Much has happened that was not envisaged. Kids today don`t think twice about it, but `internet` really was a weird, strange thing. Still is to me.

Doesn`t make me laugh unstoppably though. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I guess the biggest change for me (as I read alot of books) was the amount of time difference in ordering books from overseas (Im in Australia).

Before the Internet it would take 3 Months per book (Serious- they must have been on a square rigger http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif ).

One time after I had waited 3 Months for a book I enquired if it was in yet - Oh im sorry your order has gone missing http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif.

Thats OK just wait another 3 Months - yep that one book arrived in my hot little hands 6 Months after initially ordering it.

Every time I get a Book from Amazon http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif in 4 Days it never ceases to amaze me.

Interesting, sad, almost quaint in its naivete. My poor Krell. They never imagined what man's unquenchable thirst for Porn would transmute this quaint academic and military computer highway into did they?
