I'm guessing that that pic was taken at the point of start up, when the uncombusted and rich mixture from the first few turns got out.

There was a good reason to have a man with an extinguisher around!

Gotta admit, as a WW2 pilot, if I saw fire bursting from my engine like that I`d be a little worried.

Until I got used to it!

What are these holes in the antenna and beneath the canopy in the first picture,bulletholes from reargunners fire?
It looks like small caliber?
