The Vc 4 cannon Spit was in one of the recent patches, can't remember the rest. There's a thread two spaces down on this board that will give you details of how to install the free downloads.

Hope it helps.

Good one with the Bottle of Britain LF2, http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif if there wasn't a beer called Spitfire, we'd have to invent it.

The brewery gives lots of money to the RAF Benevolent Fund too. Now that's what I call responsible drinking. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

No, that's just a mission pack with a remarkably similar name. AEP = Ace Expansion Pack. It's got a picture of a checker-tailed P-51D Mustang above a Me 163 Komet & a flaming B-17 on the cover. Look for the Ubisoft logo bottom right corner.

Can anyone walk me through the alphabet soup that is the Spitfire? We've got dozens of them and about half don't have years, so I can't make heads or tails out of them.

Should be of some help.

Thanks.

At a cursory glance, they don't get into the various subtypes (LF, HF, CW, b, c, e, etc). Some of those subtypes that do have years on them in IL2 don't seem to be chronological with the roman numerals.

Also, there is a lot of contradictory info there. The 2 sites don't agree with each other on the climb rate of the V, and the first site has an image of a comparison between the V and the "109F1/2", and the charts in the pic don't agree with the text on the page that has the link for the pic. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Ok, a bit of systemacy here:

Basicaly you have 4 marks of spitfire to choose from:

MkV
MkIX
MkVIII
and Seafire MkIII (which is, again, nothing more than modyfied Spitfire MkV)

There are many subversions with different options: normal/clipped wings, different armament (2x20mm, 4x0.303; 2x20mm, 2x.50; 4x20mm) and different engine modifications: HF for High altitude fight, and LF for low altitude fight.

There are no late war spitfires, like MkXIV. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

AEP 2.0
Spitfire Mark Vb (also with a clipped wing version)
Spitfire Mark LF Vb* (also clipped)
*identical to Vb but with a revised Merlin engine for low alitude performance only

AEP 2.01
Spitfire Mark LF IXc (/w clipped)
Spitfire Mark LF IXe (/w clipped)
Spitfire Mark HF IXe
The LF's all have the same engine and varry in armament and the HF has a different high altitude engine

PF 3.0m
Spitfire VIIIc (/w clipped)
Seafire F.III and L.III*
*Like the Vb and LF Vb with high and low altitude engines

PF 3.04m
Spitfire Vc 2x and 4x cannon versions with tropical filter

People mistakenly say that we've got ALOT of Spitfire types but we basically have a Spitfire V, a Spitfire VIII, a Spitfire IX, and a Seafire. Everything else is a gun or engine change. This is in many ways indicative of the Spitfire's development where many times the engine was the biggest change. The Spitfire Vb was just a Mark II with a bigger engine and the early Spitfire IX was just a Vb with a bigger engine and new wing armament (C type).

The first truly revolutionary Spitfire after the Mark I was the Mark 21 which nearly totally redesigned the fighter but that only saw service in the final weeks of WWII, to my knowledge never saw combat in the conflict, and was produced in extremely limited numbers.

As for in-game performance...the Spitfire is well liked and performs close to its performance numbers. But its not a wonder fighter and must be flown with respect and knowledge of the Spitfires traits to get the most out of it.
