I flew a bit on the "Winds of War" server last night and had a great time...even though my survival rate was low.

Soon after I joined the server, I became aware that a core group of pilots (not sure if they were from a squad or just pick-ups) were flying A-20s as a group...it was great. The A-20s would take off in turn, then circle the field as the whole group formed up. At one point I think there were more than twelve of us heading towards the target in loose formation. Of course once the Luftwaffe figured out where we were forming up, we became easy targets. The only thing missing was effective fighter cover.

Anyway, I hope I run across a group of pilots like this more often. It was about the best online play I've had on an open server.

Great show there last night. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
I was going south at 5000m along the front line in FW-190 A5 and spotted you guys down there I counted nine aircraft.
After the dive, I was doing some 750 km/h and had a good pass. I shot down two A-20's and somehow a friendly aircraft in that pass. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif
Strange. I never saw him. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif Sorry buddy.

That formation was impressive. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif Too bad you guys had no cover.

IMHO this is one area where cooperative missions have a slight advantage, because if the mission designer puts the escort fighters in there, they will be there for you, even if no human player jump into them. In that case, AI will do the work for you, not so brilliantly, but certainly better than nothing.

True, true, A.I. fighter cover is better than none, and in my case, sometimes better than me.

I was on late last week and had a similar experience. We had a whole bunch of folks jump in IL-2s and roll in on the blue bases. Stomped those bases flatter than a pancake, and won the mission in about 30 minutes. Folks were pretty surprised, and the kill*****s where whining. Great run!

I found that getting on comms helps quite a bit. I ran A-20/IL-2 torp runs north along the coast of one map, and when I called for it, I got fighter cover. Was really impressed with the caliber of the folks up and flying there. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Jaws,

I just checked the stats...I was one of those A-20s you killed last night. Hope you enjoyed the target practice http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

As a typical fighter jock on WoW, I almost always look for a wingman (if I don't bring one), someone to cover, then targets (flying or stationary) in that order.

It's always more fun to fly cover for a group of dedicated mudmovers and to see at least a few of them get out of there after a successful strike than to simply fly around looking for the bee swarm. I'll do that all night long and occassionally bring a pickle of my own if given the opportunity.

The Warbirds of Prey servers have historically been really good about making coordinated attacks as well. I'm usually on coms with some of my buddies and we'll gladly cruise and cover for pilots that work towards satisfying the mission objectives.
