Silent Hunter III is the most recent U-boat game in the popular Silent Hunter series.
If you, like me, have never played the first two games, don't sweat it.
You are bound to enjoy it

Silent Hunter III will keep you entertained for many, many hours..

Nice work - it sounds most enjoyable.

The DVD thing is new to me. Does this mean that I must have a DVD player on my PC to install it?

Tallyho;

Yes it does. DVD is the wave of the future. It wouldn't surprise me if BoB will be on a DVD.

A friend of mine at work, a hard core FPS type, never quite understood my addiction to FB/AEP/PF. Then he got Silent Hunter III. Now he comes to work regaling me with tales of the deep while I tell tales of my air exploits. That a simualtion would so hook a dyed-in-the-wool Shooter guy says volumes to me about the immersive quality of this game.

Lord knows I don't have time for another sim but maybe I'll have to find the time. From everything I've heard this is an excellent game. And the trailers are stupendous! Oleg, can we get water like that?

Amazing, the number of typos that I missed while self-editing. Minor typos are not so bad (i.e. spelling/extra words), but I do want to make one correction. Under system requirements the necessary free HD space should read "2 Gigs". I seem to have added a "1" there, making the total requirement 21 gigs . . . Well, hopefully you will all know that no DVD can hold that much data, even compressed, so my bad, Folks. All you need are the 2 gigs.

I sent this off last night, and Snoopy had her up for viewing this morning. He's one fast mod http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone. If you have all followed the comments from some of the other community members playing the game, then you know that this baby comes highly recomended. I've been using it as a drug to alleviate "patch mania" when I feel its evil clutches http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

Agreed Larry, an excellent sim or should I say RTS http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Been enjoying it for a while now. Would love to see some "rescue downed pilot" mission like we had in SH1 tho.

Nice one tsisqua.
I have to say that SHIII has to be played with headphones. It really adds to the tension when your stuck down deep when the destroyers start pinging you.
The other week I had an all day session. After about 14 hours I ended up getting pinned on the bottom by two destroyers.I could not shake them so went for the stop everything & sweat it out aproach. I was tired & the result was I feel asleep with headphones on.
The result was an ugly affair.
"DEPTH CHARGES IN THE WATER SIR"
BOOM.BOOM.BOOM
I left the chair nearly screaming. For one horrible second it felt like I was there. I'm now thinking about hanging some Ham's & sausages above my desk. So next time it happens when I jump up with a bit of luck I might knock myself out & save myself a whole lot of shock.

It sounds like a great game but I still have concerns about a certain anti-theft software issue we aren't allowed to mention here.

If you want to start trolling with posts like the above, and the thread I locked this morning, you're won't be posting on any UBI forum. Take it somewhere else.

Steve_v,
When I saw that the SHIII forum is allowing open discussion of this issue I did not think it would be a problem to discuss here. Either the standards are different from forum to forum or they are slacking off on the SHIII forum. Either way my intention was not to troll and I am bothered by the fact that open discussion of a real issue is not allowed here.

If you think I have violated the forum rules in any way I would be open to hearing it here or via PM.

Great sim,

Been playing this series since SH1 as well as the great classic Aces Of The Deep.

I just hope they implement the Sea Cows and wolf packs (Aces had both)ASAP as promised by the devolopment team.

hello guys.

Been reading about the FW200 Kondor and the battle of the atlantic lately, and as u know U-boats is a part of that and colaborated with the Kondors.

I guess U all know about this site.

Interesting article about the myth that German U-boat crews machinegunned defensless people in the water and punctured lifeboats.

Add Kondors, Sunderlands,Catalina's,Liberators, etc. (if SHIII cannot be made to integrate with Pacific Fighters in the same way that Destroyer Command 2 integrated with SHII - Ubisoft is behind both).

I believe that those are covered by the sim. However, instead of flying them . . . well, its cool to be on the U-Boat side of a plane massacre once in awhile http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I'm just getting into this sim, and have a quick question. I've downloaded the 1.1 and 1.2 patches. Do i need to install them both, or is the 1.1 patch included in the 1.2 patch?

EURO_Snoopy
04-30-2005, 10:21 AM
Im assuming here that as the 1.1 isn't on SHIII Updates (http://www.silent-hunteriii.com/uk/updates.php) you will not need it.

BuzzU
04-30-2005, 10:31 AM
That's why I asked, but wasn't sure, because the 1.1 is 11 mgs and the 1.2 is only 13 mgs. Was the 1.2 patch that small?

The only reason i'm concerned is in some sims it''s better to skip some patches if they're included in later patches. You end up with better performance. Lock On is one example of that.

Heres my review:

Graphics Great

Water Great

models done well

deck gun fun but cheesy

anti aircraft gun fun for 3 minutes but very unrealistic and cheesy.

*wish to self **** i wish i got these fps and water graphics in fb aep pf for a moment.

online play is fun for a couple hours of play, people are on comms anyway so disabling the text type feature is pretty lame. Get mad at the torpedo duds and those who all just strike a convoy and not surface to draw the ships away from those who fired.

Games offline playlife 3-5 hours max at the most then it becomes as interesting as watching the movie fried green tomatoes for the 4th time with your wife or girlfriend.

Things they have to do to increase customers interest in shiii online.

Incorporate PT boats knights of the sea and the new destroyer command together with SHIII to increase the games playlife and interest factor.

Great review Larry. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

LB... it's a good game and with all the mods it just gets better. Be careful tho as some mods have no readme which is sad. Backup anything you change.... just in case, but you already know that. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Make sure you get the 1.2 patch and install it before you add any mods.

Why would you even ask someone to buy it from you?

IIRC, EBgames will give you 100% return on any game within 7 days. I'm sure there are a lot of other retailers that have a similar policy, thats why I only buy there now. So if you "Really" got bored of it that fast you should have returned it by now.

Unless of course you are just Trolling. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This is the most, dare I say it, immersive, electronic entertainment I have ever played. I simply get lost in the game and play for hours on end. Definitely not for fans of "Short Attention Span Theater".

Nice review as well...

I bought it at Compusa. No returns.
