Jump to cockpit keys

I have defined a series of keys for the "Jump to Cockpit" 1--10 commands . I assumed this meant that during flight you could actually move yourself to and control any of the other planes on your mission.
But during Quick Missions the keys appear to have no effect at all in doing this.

Have I just misunderstood what these commands are meant to do or is there a bug in their operation.

you can't leave your airplane. the jump to cockpit commands are for the planes (ie:bombers ) that have more than a one person crew. useless to map for a fighter pilot.
