I dont know were you guys get this 1 hit stuff. Any aircraft can be downed by the golden "1 hit". Its not just the mustang. The 109 is really bad, and so are most Yak's and the P-40. Why center out the Mustang? The DM that is in the game is made for AI only. Also, just because Hartman wrote he killed a Mustang in 1 hit does not mean everyone can. If I remember the story, he got a 20MM hit into the side of the engine. The engone started smoking and the pilot bailed. #1, a 20MM hit into engine would stop it, except a radial. #2, he got the kill because the pilot bailed. The pilot possibly could have flown it back to base. #3, I saw a photo of a P-51 pilot holding a 20MM shell they extracted from his engine when he got home safely.

So dont give me this "Mustang dead with 1 hit" bs. It does not apply exclussivly to the Mustang!!!

Also, there was a guy working on the P-51A and B at Il2 Center not to long ago. I dont know the progress.

Any inline engine aircraft was this way. But the P-51 has come back with 20MM slugs in its engine in WWII just fine.

Gib,

I'm worried that Oleg feels this way too. From the object viewer on the P-51:

Luftwaffe pilots considered the Mustang to be rather vulnerable to cannon fire, particularly the liquid-cooled Merlin engine, which could be put out of action by a single hit.

I doubt the Luftwaffe pilots as a whole thought anything about the Mustang..most of em were inexperienced by that time..if they saw a Musty..chances are they didn't RTB to make a statement like that. LOL

It might have got the bad rap, because they were comparing it the the P-47.

Compare that to the other planes that German dayfighters would be used to on the ETO.

The P-47: has a deserved reputation as one of the most rugged fighters of the war.

The B-17: Obviously a 4 engine bomber was a more robust target that a single engine fighter.

The P-38: Twin engined redundancy.

In comparison it's very likely that LW pilots would see the Pony as having a glass jaw. The quote can only be taken in the context that it was made, the pilot may have never seen other plane types than this to compare against.

S'all I got to say.

I think it all stems from the Heartman story of him shooting down a mustang from 1 20MM hit into the engine. It gets retold so many times and alterd so much, it sounds like "many pilots accounts". I can see a man like Heartman putting a Mustang away with a single shot, but again, SkyChimp posted a pic of a pilot who just extracted a 20MM round from his engine. So far we have 1 pilot who did shoot down a P-51 with 1 shot, and 1 pilot who came home with a 20MM in the engine. Like I said, any inline engine would have that problem when hit by a 20MM, not just Mustangs.

This may be true, but the P-51 AI can't take any damage at all. I don't know if this is going to carry over to the flyable P-51. If it does, it's going to be a fragile plane. I have my fingers crossed.

So the 20mm was a dud or an AP. That's the sort of luck a combat pilot needed on his side.

I remember the caption on the photo. It was an un-exploded round pilled from one of his cylinders.

over on il2 center it says maddox is in the process of the p51b, any plane with radiator damage would overheat and seize cowls only cool so much even at low rpms

Shame Blue Devil. The P-51 arrived in Dec 1943, and was the major player in the decisive air battles of Jan-May 1944, when the LW was beaten down to the point the Invasion was considered possible.

There were plenty of trained, experienced LW pilots, flying fine planes in Jan 1944. By May there weren't.

P-51 is weak, very vulnerable to cannon fire.. no doubt about that.. just don't get any damage .. it should apply to BF109 and Yaks aswell! And it does..

Most planes can't take bullets well... Maybe the P47 or the FW190 can take a few, but most of the times, if you get hit, you die. Even if it isn't immediately, your manouvrability decreases etc, so you die in the 2nd pass. Don't get hit 8)
