Awesome! I really enjoy the cut scenes and guncam footage. My friend says it's long in the tooth, but I enjoy the showcasing of FB's little details. How long did you guys spend on this?

georgeo76 sorry about your toothy friend but that's what an epic is /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
i wanted to show N00Bs and the unenlightened just how awesome and immersive the game is.["Luke - come to the dark side"] and still ENTERTAIN the regulars.

building the mission and getting the timing right took 6 or so hours, flying it three or four times with friends took a couple more, track playback with a digital camcorder a couple of more. then edit, paste, soundtrack, reedit etc.... well i got probably more than 50 hours into it

as for the music the choice were easy
Flight of the Valkryies - Wagner
Russian Sailor's Dance - Gliere
Battle of the Huns - Liszt
Finlandia - Sibelius

One thing I really hate is when people with very specific knowledge of a subject relish in being able to prove somebody wrong about it just to inflate their own ego, no matter how meaningless or obscure it is.

That being said, the music when the IL-2's were taking off was from Sergei Prokoviev's "Romeo and Juliet".

1- i was relishing the enjoyment of my work, not my knowledge and i was responding to a compliment on the music... i've been taught it was polite /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
2- you are absolutely correct i forgot to mention Sergei Prokoviev's "Romeo and Juliet" it was the only one not germane to the theme of the movie/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
3- thank you and did you enjoy the movie?/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

It`s well done, but I realised a while back the amazing stuff that can be done with the sim if given time.
I write and draw a lot of stories myself and would love to do some IL2 exciting flicks (a sort of nail-biting edge of seat stuff), but I just don`t have time to do a game sim too.

Guess just have to leave it to you guys,,, /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Wow. Epic indeed. Bravo. Thanks for your work and for those hosting the file. A nice speedy download.

That said, some humble comments and questions if I may....
I thought the pacing was a little off. Perhaps a little too much time in the beginning to establish the setting (the storm, etc) and not enough attention given to the Finns and the conclusion. I realize, of course, that this is nitpicking an amazing effort. The mission itself looks like it would be fun. It reminded me alot of a mission I created concerning the siege of Sevastopol and the evacuation of the Crimea.

Since the advent of DVD, I've become increasingly fascinated by the process of filmmaking - and apparently, an amateur critic - sorry. Some questions. I would guess that you come up with an overall concept of how you want the movie to play out and then create a mission based on that. Do you write the text beforehand and modify it based on the track footage (or not modify it at all) or do you write the text near the end after the tracks are shot? Do you plan the 'shots' beforehand or do you concentrate on telling the overall story and then coose the shots based on how the tracks played out to complement the story? Finally, did the game limit you in any way in fleshing out the strory you wished to tell?

Thanks

I think he meant to say:

"Who is the hunter? ... and... Whom does he hunt?

THAT would be correct.

JRJacobs, Really enjoyed your movie. I thought the music choice was daring and your water scenes were as good as Pdog1's which up until this point stood alone for excellence. I really liked the way you involved the viewer more by using text to help sort the story out. Not using them could have been fatal for a movie this length.

Your camera placements were excellent and gave us nice views of the action. Your overall presentation of your vision was very well conveyed and you should be proud of your effort. This will be a nice addtion to the finer movies in the community. Please continue to provide us with your visions of FB stories in the future. S!

JRJacobs,

If you read it carefully, you'll see that Klondiked was referring to himself, not you. In pointing out that "the music when the IL-2's were taking off was from Sergei Prokoviev's 'Romeo and Juliet'" he was himself being a person "with very specific knowledge of a subject [relishing] in being able to prove somebody wrong about it just to inflate [his] own ego, no matter how meaningless or obscure it [was]."

It was just his way of saying, "Hey, I noticed something about your film, but I don't want to come off as being a nit-picking jerk." Since he went to all that effort to avoid coming across wrong, I thought I'd point out to you that he still managed to do it. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-sad.gif

/i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

To play the critic myself, I also noticed a few spelling errors and also a few times where you panned with the mouse that it was a bit jerky. Also the frame rates during the gun-camera sequence were pretty bad. But none of this seriously detracts from the film. My only real comments would be to shorten some of the scenes by not dwelling on camera angles too long. I find having the higher resolution to be a great idea, but the length of the movie probably prevents some people from wanting to download it, and I just think that making some of the sequences shorter will keep the flow of the film more interesting.

Again, kudos and great effort, it's a keeper!

Cheers,
Mike

michapma thank you for the critique

I wasn't certain if Klondiked was being self-effacing of subtle [I thought it was self-effacing] but text medium is so difficult to express emotions that only smiley faces [emoticon] help I even put in some winkers /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif to show I wasn't serious either.

The program I was using Studio 8 took a dump in the msvcrt.dll that I haven't been able to fix. This problem affected the import of music so I had to create the movie, layer the text screens then output the entire thing as an AVI. Then I imported it into Movie Maker to add the music and output the WMV

The frame rates were jerky because of an effect filter in movie maker to make it look like old [original] footage. sorry I must have overdone it [but it's a gadget I had to try it /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif ]

Spelling errors are my bane I'm a phonic speller

I'll work on shorter, but I wanted to do something different, plot over the action. Yes I thought the Finish sequence could have been longer, but I had set my time limit to 20 minutes and some things had to go. [now I know how Spielberg feels/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ]

All in all it was great fun, but now I gotta pay off-hour attention to my wife so I can do another one in the future

again thanks to all who host [not whom /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ] without you only my friend would see this

Wow, look at all that's happened since my last post.

I did like the movie. I'm a little ashamed to admit that I sort of skipped ahead during the first five minutes. I don't think the graphics for a sinking ship are anything to write home about, and it got to be a little boring watching them. Then again, maybe I missed something by fast-forwarding?

It was fun watching the airplanes, especially when the IL-2's were attacking the ships. That was truly a thing of beauty. I liked the ending, as well. Was all this based on actual events, or did you make it up?

Finally, I thought your use of music was excellent. I mean truly, truly excellent. Not only was it music which I can associate with closely, but I think you did an outstanding job of synchronizing it with the film itself. When that first destroyer went down, I got so excited, and it's entirely because of your music/film editing.

I look forward to seeing more films from you, mostly because I saw so many things in the first film that really exemplified what I like about IL-2. It really shows your effort.

One more thing. As far as sound goes, you may be able to achieve good effects actually using the game sounds. You may remember a holocaust movie that came out several years ago called "Schindler's List"? My favorite part of that was when the nazis were cleaning out a Jewish quarter in Poland, I believe, and towards the end, a German soldier had found a piano. He sat down and started plunking out a melody from a Bach keyboard suite, very mechanically. In the background, you could hear machine gun fire causing havoc, while this soldier just banged away at the piano. It was very surreal.

Oh, and by the way, my first comment was meant to be self-effacing, but in a sarcastic humourous sort of way. You guys really over-analyzed it, too. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Very good effort. Your time was well spent. If it makes you happy, you made at least one person happy with your 50 hours of work. Me, on the other hand... I'm greedy. Anything less that 50 people (a person for each hour spent working) is a waste. But I'm sure that you now have way over 50 admirers. I think that Ubi Soft might even buy that video off of you if you get rid of the Swatztikas. It is illegal to publish them in any commercial way but you didn't make any money off of this. How come Jane's WW2 fighters has swatztikas on her fighters?

i once was in management and i learned that the art of management is not seeing how many people you can make happy... it's seeing how FEW you can P Off /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif
if you gave everyone at work for free, a $20 bill...
five would say "is this all"...
and two would say "mines wrinkled can i have a new one" /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
i knew i wouldn't make everyone happy but i must say i'm astonished at how few didn't like it. i'm impressed and gratified. good critiques, little criticism and no flames. what a great crew. thanks for the ego boost AND the critiques.. i better see my movies shortcomings and plan on improving them in the next one
