View Full Version : A pic for CrazyIvan (related to my cockpit)

This is my first attempt at making a control panel for my cockpit. Keep in mind that this was done with basic hand tools. Hopefully, I'll be getting a drill-press soon http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Of course the lettering was the hardest part, but they became easier as I went. The next panels should turn out looking much better (since I now know how to do them).

That looks great! I've been thinking about building a cockpit myself. Could you tell me how you plan to wire this all to your computer?

BREAK! BREAK!

Are those the Switches we discussed Baldie? Hell, thats looks great chief, can't wait to see the finished product.

If you need anything, give me a ring.

Now THAT'S a good idea. When and where can we get it?

The switchs are dual pole, dual throw. I'm interfacing to the computer through a plasma2 from http://www.betainnovations.com and using Keyboard Studio (same site) to send dual key presses. An example: When TW Lock is switched, it sends the keystroke to lock the tail wheel. When the switch is turned off, it sends the keystroke again.

Since the switches are dual switches, the unused portion goes to the LED. I flip the switch, the light lights, and the game recieves the proper keystroke. Once I flip the switch off, the light goes out and the game gets the keystroke again.

For the construction curious: Thats a 6 inch by 4 inch piece of 1/8th inch plexi glass painted flat-black (BBQ paint) with 10 DPDT mini toggles, 10 panel mount LEDs, and the lettering was done with DATAK dry transfer lettering (1/8th inch) that I got from ocean state electronics (www.oselectronics.com (http://www.oselectronics.com) I think?).

The next panels should look far better.

That is fantastic Baldie. Well done.
Now, where is the rest of the pit? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Maybe in a few months. I start a 2nd job tomorrow, so my free-time will be nill for awhile.

I hope to build a throttle quadrant this weekend.

You started me thinking. Since there seems to be several with different degrees of work put into the simu-cockpit and many more expressed intrest every time you post up some pictures.

Its only about an hour from my home to one of the biggest airplane graveyards this side of anywhere.

A. Would I even be allowed access to yank out some authentic old control panels?

B.If I bothered would anyone here be intrested in them?

A little sandblast, a little primer and waalaa. Looks like you already have the switching part down cold Baldie.

Well After only a light run through google there appears to be many more hoops involved into getting the required permits than my old reformed hoodlum butt is willing to jump through.

Funny how easily the feds overlooked oweing me some payola a few years back but remember my being somewhat of a turd all the way back in 75.

Anyway, the drive to Davis-Monthan boneyard is pretty dull.

Gee Baldie, where do you find all time to build that thing. I wish I have the time you have.

Udidtoo;

Yeah, that is pretty funny isn't it? They sure have a memory when it suits them. That's too bad you have to jump through all those hoops just for some stuff nobody wants. I mean, it sits there and rusts away...

I figured this would break 1000 views in just a few hours. Oh well. I'll try acephobia sometime next week.

Anyways, not a lot of time involved in that one panel. Maybe 4 hours. Its easier if you search ebay for the plexiglass as you can usually find it precut (scraps of equal length from production leftovers and such).

I'll be a couple days soldering of course, but I like doing that, so no big deal.

Panel looks nice.. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

About the wiring problem...

Why not use some second hand usb - joystick
and use its electronics to connect ur panel to the puter.
IÔ┬┤ll bet there are some for sale for reasonable sum of money. Atleast it should be a lot cheaper than all the key emulating gadgets for sale to ppl who builds their owne sim cockpits. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Heads-on firing was not a safe practice after all ?
Jussi Huotari: It was not specially recommendedÔ.....
And later, as the Russians were armed with 20mm cannons, it was unwise to meet them heads-on

I had considered doing that, and even gutted an old stick I had laying around, but in the end, it came down to my laziness.

Buying a control board that could handle everything was far easier than desoldering 20 microswitches and soldering in wires to connect real switches. It also became a rats nest of wires in short order... not something you want to deal with when trying to troubleshoot a faulty switch.

Plus, using the plasma 2, I get 16 sliders, 28 switches, 4 hats, 4 pulsed inputs, and built-in jitter filtering (helps eliminate pot spiking) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Heyy Baldie......that looks really nice. I was wondering how far along you had gotten on your panels. How is the rest of the pit coming? We need to get together and talk ideas.

Hey Diablo http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thats all i've comlpeted so far. The past few months have been spent tinkering and collecting parts.

I'm hoping to get the engine management panel, throttle quadrant, and trim control panel finished this week. Once those are finished I can start trying to mount these things to the 'pit.

I wish I had more time. I'd love to meet up with you one weekend... summer is fun and all, but i've just about had enough of these family events _every_freaking_weekend http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
