Whenver this has been asked before the official answer has been no!

There hasn't really been a reason given as such - lots of mumbling about how dificult the software is to use though.

IMHO, free software for maps creation would allow the community to create free addons, as it happens for other sims. This wouldn't help UBI to sell their addons .... and software houses aren't so happy to give away their know-how and tools.

Ubi sell add-ons with maps? There will be new maps in the FREE AEP patch. We were given the new western front maps for FREE in patch 1.21 so Justflight (not Ubi) could sell a Western Front add-on. Someone said that the reason was that only 1C:Maddox has the licence for the map tool and they can't allow other companies to sell maps created with this tool.

Also FB maps are not just pretty 3D-models, but are deeply integrated into the program code. And FB has closed program code.

Just think of:
- AI vehicles moving along roads, railway lines and over bridges.
- Ships should travel only in the water.
- AI aircraft taxiing to their parking positions on pre-programmed routes, which are different on each base.
- Clouds are objects on the maps, too, and there are several weather settings with different clouds.
- Those additional trees that are generated on most surfaces with 'Excellent' or higher graphics settings.
- Different quality of ground surface on runways and roads (smooth) or elsewhere (rough).

All of this means that maps contain much more information and it's harder to create them than is obvious.

Yeah I wish 1C would releace an addon map CD with nothing but new maps...big maps.

FB map makers have also said placing buildings is the hardest part of map creation. But we don't NEED buildings we need terrain.

Well, about a year back, Oleg said:

"If you're willing to buy the map-making software, which comes at a steep price, go ahead, but that still doesn't mean your map might make it in..."

I asked about the same thing when we got AEP for creating new meshs/new maps. oleg said no and you need liscence to use the map maker program which is very expensive. he didnt say how much. I think thats one of the things setting il2fb/aep back a bit we all flown the same square maps thousands of times and know every nook and cranny.

Maybe luthier would know more and communicate more clearly about the subject

Another reason for Compatibility between FB and FP. With all the new maps of Pacific and (yes) China we could use
those maps in our FB (or FB planes on FP maps the Compatibility may work one way but that's okay).

We always used Eastern Front maps for western Euro, Med, and Channel so...

Plumps,

Maybe I was not enough clear. I define AEP an add-on to FB, despite they prefer to call it "expansion pack". As you know, the back of the AEP package claims 3 new maps (Ardennes, Normandie, and Pacific - online). Also, I paid 37.5 euro for my copy.

I hope this explains better what I meant: paying for new maps as part of add-ons. Also, I'm sure that Justflight will pay royalties to UBI to use their stuff.

If you read my post very carefully, I did say " like some help to create new planes". By witch I mean we create maps and they (Oleg and co) put them in the game like for the planes... so they still have their control over the product and a much greater team of amateurs to make new maps for their game!

Sensei.

I think that's what already happens to a limited extent. The Normandy and Ardennes maps (by Luthier) were included that way. And I remember that Ian Boys posted about a map he was creating. A few screenshots of new airbase types were posted in the regular development update some months ago, after that we've heard nothing new.

In an Interview at SimHQ (http://www.simhq.com/_air/air_110b.html) Luthier talked about the experience:
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>The maps especially were a major project for us. Initially we thought of doing a bunch of loosely historical campaigns on existing maps, since only Maddox Games had the map creation tools and it did not seem possible for them to create new Western European maps. However then the opportunity arose for us to license those tools from Maddox Games. MG spent much more time thinking about this than I did, and gave us enough warning not to do this. However I foolishly took it upon myself to learn and use those tools to create new maps, and soon found myself completely devoured by the project with no end in sight. Even Maddox Games probably regretted giving us those tools in the end, since they were never really designed for an outsider and I required an incredible amount of support from Olegā's team on the staggering amount of basic mistakes and undocumented quirks I kept uncovering. The maps were finally complete after six months of almost full time work from me, and Iā'm sure that working with me on this was an experience Maddox Games will not want to repeat with anybody else.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

This does not sound too encouraging.

If their software is that expensive why is it bugged so much??? And so hard to learn. Strange....

It was probably not designed for public use, but for insiders only.

Just look at the weak user interface and undocumented features the FMB has -- and it was obviously designed for the users. Now think of a tool that is is even less user-friendly...
