View Full Version : Now accepting donations for PBY Catalina Flyable

Well, as many of you know, recently I lost my job. I have used this now "free" time to model both the P-80 and Go-229. Now that those are out of the way and nearly done, I will be starting my next project soon. It wont take me long to complete the P-38, but after that, I will be making the PBY Catalina flyable.

Doing a munti-crew bomber is a monumental task. I am only asking for this because money is EXTREAMLY tight for me right now. I need to do more research, get another book or two, and possibly get a new hard drive. My current drive is COMPLEATLY FULL!! My 3DS folder that houses all my data for the IL2 aircraft that I have done (models, textures, and reference photo's) currently takes up 1/4th of my hard drive.

Please note. I am not demanding a donation. The PBY will be flyable with or without donations. Please don't feel obligated. Many people in this forum have offered me donations, and I am afraid it is now time to accept.

To donate, you can go to http://www.paypal.com and send your donation too gibbage@lycos.com. For new users, you get 5$ free just for signing up! You can sign up, transfer that to me, and nothing comes out of your pocket. If you wish to donate more, your more then welcome too!!!

As an added bonus, the top donators will get a personal "thank you" from me, and there names (or handles) painted on the inner hull below the blisters. That's about the only reward I can offer right now. The rest get weekly updates on the progress with screen shots.

Thank you everyone in the community. This is the first time I have ever been involved in a game community in the history of playing. It has been the highlight of my life the last 2 years since I found this forum. Good debates, bad flames, lots of fans. Im just happy I can add to it.

Kevin,

I think thats a great idea, I'll certainly donate. I think you do a fab job and your time should be paid for one way or another - the community will benefit from your hard work, IMHO it's only fair that you get something out of it other than the pleasure of making the models and the satisfaction of being respected by the community. The only thing I would suggest is that you are strict with the scope of any projects as people are going to expect stuff if they are 'donating' read paying http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Also, just a thought, but it would be great to have a kinda of commemorative plaque or certificate, in electronic format, containing the names of those who have donated.Your painting names idea is also really cool, although I know space is limited.

Finally - how much will I need to give you to persuade you to do a Lancaster? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif (please please!!)

Keep up the good work dude, good luck.

Thanks. I will make a special thank you page on my server listing the people who have donated. I will not list how much, or put them in any order. I dont want this to be a compatition, or put down anyone who could not afford to give much. Anything is more then welcome.

Im thinking about having an auction. The one who bids the most gets his name on the toilet lid that says something like "NAME was here". Lol. What do you think? J/K

How about this?

In a way, this is a form of "pan handling" and the IRS cant touch it. Its a form of gift. I think if I make more then XXXX ammunt of money they would pay attention, but not a few bucs.

Also, donations of photo's and referances are MORE THEN WELCOME!!! I have had a few of those. Please upload any pics of the PBY to gibbage@lycos.com I mainly need the blisters and front turrete.

P.S. Buzz. I want to do the P-63 after the PBY if I have time. I already have the cockpit for the P-39 and external referances. I need cockpit photo's to make the changes to the P-39 pit. I heard its a totally differant pit. I hope not. External is EZ for me. The pits are... well the pits!!!

How much difference (externally) is there between a PBY(not in FB) and a PBN(in FB)?Is there even a difference? If there is will you make a new PBY model or just use the existing PBN model and couple a PBY interior to it? Sorry for the ignorance, just wonderin...../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

XyZspineZyX
07-12-2003, 04:59 AM
VVS had both the PBY 5A, a few 6A's (late war) and mostly PBN's. The main differances are #1, float change, #2, added 3rd step on the hull, #3, no landing gear,#4, pointy nose, #5, collapseable turrete. What I may do is make the PBY 5A for many reasons. It opens up more area's since it will have landing gear, and I dont have any data on the PBN's front turrete. I also think you guys wont mind a 5A with gear. I also may make BOTH. Since the PBN is already in, just do a few changes to the front turrete. Internally there were no differances but the front turrete and bomber position.

DOH! I just realized I will need to make a bomber position. I doubt they would of sent the Norden bombsight to the Russians. What other bomb sights did we have at the time? Can anyone help me on this?

That sounds great! I would prefer the amphibious PBY over the stricly flying-boat PBN. As for the bomb-site, weren't Russian ones used? I can't be certain, but didn't the Russian strip them out and use their own? Or were the PBNs even SENT with bomb sites?

XyZspineZyX
07-12-2003, 07:38 AM
I dunno. Thats what I want to find out. I need to know what type of sight the Soviets used for the guns also. The regular PBY's had an optical gunsights sight. Typically the US did not like sending the Soviets our good stuff (I.E. P-39 and old trucks). So I think I am going with ring and ball sights.

I've donated, not because of the PBY, but because I feel like I know you, having read so many of your posts. A friend in need is a friend indeed. It's not much, but I hope it helps.

P.S. If lock-on ever comes out and accepts third party modellers projects, what's the chance of someday seeing an F111 Aardvark? My favorite plane, worked on them for 4 years!

Cool! Someone sent me Euro's!! It transfered well to US. 1.10 US on the 1EUR.

So far so good! The comunity has been very generous. A lot more then I was expecting. I was hoping to have enough to buy a few books. If we keep going at this rate, I can take a trip to Florida and visit the PBY Cutaway!!! J/K But please, keep it comming. Every little helps. I have also had some very generous offers of books, and pics. E-mail gibbage@lycos.com if you would like to donate other forms of material. I will take anything. Even garden gnomes! Lol.

Also, does anyone have any information on the Cutaway PBY I heard they have in Florida? I got a few low res pics of it and it would be PERFECT for research. Like a link to the museum. Maybe I can talk to the museum about getting photo's. Or anyone in the area with a good camera?

Possibly the P-63. Maybe make the He-129 finally flyable. I dunno. It all depends on what happens. The PBY will take me quite a bit of time. Im guessing 1-2 months. Also, Oleg stated quite some time ago that he wont be supporting 3rd party aircraft after this year is up. He needs to get his team on the next game. That I can agree with 100%. So I cant just keep adding on aircraft forever. We will see what Oleg's next project is.

I'll start a bomber gibbage donation fund that would be rewarding for you http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

What is the speed of a PBY? I don't know much about this aircraft.

Actually, looking at the list on il2 center:

would it be easier to just create some cockpits of the nonflyable bombers?

This would be great -

Hello Gibbage,

I can understand your economic tightness. Were I work they have already laid off about 56% of my department and feel that much more will come.

I really don't have much $$ to give now since I recently got a TrackIR at Ebay but I can donate hardware. You mentioned a hard drive is needed, what size are you looking for? at least I can contribute this token for all the hard work you have given. Keep it up!

By the way, I do live in Florida so if you let me know where this Catalina is located I can go with my digital camara and take some pictures for you.

Take care!

Gib, was "quasi-cash" the best to send? Hope so, didn't want you to be restricted to ebay, and real cash isn't an option...

Glad we can pay you back a little. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

please understand that you are my hero, and if i trusted PayPal enough or had a checking account (or had access to one who did, and traded them, cash for a check) i would send something your way. The PBY is one of the sexiest aircraft of all time. I love boatplanes, on multipayer "ai enabled' servers I fly the boat planes only to land them and take off (or charge the enemy base as a speedboat.)

As far as the mooks that are complaining, just ignore them. Some take and some give.
If people would realize just how much money and time is being donated behind the scenes to make this community a better place for all than hopefully some would change there tune.
I want to see this community grow and will help out however I can and try my best to show thanks and gratitude to those that contribute.

its true that donations will be a one off that will proably only Gib pocket money for a few eeks but every little bit helps

as far as selling planes as an addon .. its not possible in FB because the planes need to be incorporated into a ubi/maddox coded patch or official addon to work.

it would certianly be possible to sell a CFS3/FS2004 version of the planes, and that is somehting Gibbage may want to consdier if the 3D models are compatible and can be ported over to teh MS system

I am in NO way asking for enough money to support myself. My wife has a good job, and I sell models to CFS3. That gets the bills paid, but im braking even till I get a full time job doing 3D. I dont have any extra money to spend on research or to possibly maintain my computer a little.

No. Not yet at 500$. I dont think I will get to 500$, nor do I need 500$. What I want is enough to cover research materials like books and trips to museums. Im not greedy, and like I said I dont expect this to support my life. Just help offset the cost of research. The rest is already paid for. My PC, my time, all but the electricity to run my PC. If I do get 500$ or more, It will allow me to take a trip to a museum that has a PBY. There are none in the Orange County area in Southern California. I did visit the one in San Diago, but its up on stilts and you cant access it.

I have gotten Uro's and Pounds. They convert very well to US. 1 URO is about 1.10$ US. A pound converted is much more. Its easy and just 1 button on my side to convert it. I dont get any charges for the conversion. I am getting about 1$ charge per donation from PayPal on anything over 10$ or so. I dont mind it at all. It still beats having to deal with multiple checks and I can place the donated money directly into my account when I need to buy something.

As for Oleg and UBI, to be honest, they have been more then generous with me in ways not seen. Please dont speak ill of them. They dont NEED to put up these wonderful forums, and Oleg does not NEED to put any 3rd party aircraft in his games. These forums and adding 3rd party aircraft cost both UBI and Oleg a lot of money.

Trust me. Im not trying to supplement my living. I have been with the IL2 comunity for years. I have modeled a lot of great aircraft for IL2. Once I lost my job, a lot of people offered donations. Im just taking them up on them now.

Also, a good portion of the donations offered is research. Sending me books, taking pics of a local PBY, and that sort of stuff. This is MOST welcome and tends to go a lot further then any money. If I was greedy, I would not have accepted this.

This comunity has been ITCHING for a way to thank the modelers. I feel that this is a way they chose, not I.

Okay, I try to keep an open mind to everything so, this is what I think of it.

A:It is very clever of you to let people give money (not asking them to) for the thing you clearly like doing. Alot of big companies started that way.

B:It seems somewhat unfair for other modellers, who doesn't care about money.

Apart from RBJ with his montly "ace manual" we haven't seen something like this before. I don't think It is wise to get money for services that others offer for free, it changes something in the whole community and suddenly, everything is about money and not about flying...

Anyhow, I can only cheer at yet more aircraft flying but, I don't like money being involved. I hope you are not offended by this message.

Look. I asked the modelers if they would be OK with me taking donations, and every single one of them agreed. They thought it was a very good idea! They were not to sure if it would work. Now that I got a good response from the vast majority of the comunity, it shows the support the modelers have.

Im sorry if some of you feel that this is a scam. But its not. I dont have any disposable income to spend on research. This well help me a lot, and any left over from the PBY will be spend on other aircraft.

As a side note, I have requested information about aircraft quite often on these boards and others. I have gotten a trickle of data. After I started accepting donations, I got a flood of data! This week has been EXTREAMLY productive in gathering research. I have 1 guy who went to the PBY Cutaway in Pensicola Florida and took a CD full of pics. He is mailing that to me. Then I have people offering many book and scanned magizine articles. I have gotten more help from the comunity this last 5 days then my 2 years of being here. I am EXTREAMLY thankful and try to E-mail a personal thank you to everyone who has helped and will help.

If the same could have been done for other modelers, I am sure we would have a lot more aircraft to fly, but not every modeler is as active in the comunity as I am. Xanty is about the only other modeler I see here. Some of the other modelers requesting help simply dont get heard. So many important project have been dropped because they dont have the data. Like the He-129!!! It would be an amazing addition to IL2, but was dropped due to lack of data and time. If he approached the comunity like I have, I am sure he would have gotten an equal response and could have completed the He-129 cockpit.

I try to remind people here quite often that I am not the only modeler in need of help. If you wish to do something to help the 3D modelers, please visit the IL2 Center and see what they need. A lot of the aircraft hobbiest's could have the photo's or books we need to help out the project. Currently here is a list of things I have seen requests for recently.

Any cockpit data on the Pe-2/3 and gunner.
Gunner position for the Me-410
Cockpit info for the He-129
Turrete pics for the FW-200

If you have photo's of any of the listed aircraft, post them at the IL2 Center. Also please ask in the "referance" section what is needed. You would be suprised! Then you can show your support without spending a dime.

Well, technically I guess I am a modeler, working on the Fokker D.XXI. I find asking money from a community that's had lots of work done for it in the past by lots of people for free troubling. Does this mean skinners or mission builders who may fork over money for web pages hosting such material should throw out there proverbial hat as well?

Also, feel free to join our discussion here. Many people over at the pilot's lounge have donated and I'm sure would like to see you get a say in the thread.

What's wrong with you guys? The guy needs materials if he's going to make a good model. I sent him some scans of stuff today. No money because I've just hit the unemployment line. Gibb was gracious in accepting my megre contribution of the scans and didn't ask or hint that he'd rather have money. If you don't want to give him money, don't I've been lurking here long enough to know the guy is well-known here in the community and he does good work.

Maybe, instead of complaining, you guys could do something useful. Go scan some pics for him or send a book or anything else constructive. It's a wonder anyone does anything for this community when guys like you crap all over them.

Hmmm...a few people are troubled, so they decide to start a new flame-war with Gibbage because he is "asking" for "contributions" to aid his development of new planes for FB, requiring massive man-hours that he is able to donate due to his current employment status...go figure. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

I don't see the problem here, unless you're bored or a socialist.

Personally, I have no problem donating money (i.e. paying for FB add-ons), I even suggested to Oleg that he release third-party planes in the game, but only make them flyable by selling CDs that contain the cockpits and user FM & DM - with the proceeds to be directed in the correct percentage to the modelers.

Although, I do have a problem with Pay-Pal, so that method is a no-go for me...if Gibbage would either post or PM an addy, I wouldn't mind sending him a check though. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Personally I dont consider it flames. They have very valid questions and concerns. They bring up points and I must address. Yes R_Mutt is also doing stuff for the comunity like me, and his skins are wonderful! Im sure thet many people here would be willing to donate to him if he was having trouble paying for the server that hosts his page. Fortunatly I have a friend that has the server so I dont have that expense. But like me, I doubt R_Mutt would not ask unless he really needs it. I unfortunatly need it in order to make the PBY flable. Yes I could do without, but quality would suffer, and it would take a lot more time.

I did not know all of this. When I signed up a few years ago, they gave me the 5$ just for signing up!!! I signed up to pay for something on E-bay (15$) and I only spent 10 on it. I guess people were taking advantage of that, and now they are a lot more strict.

If you dont wish to use PayPal, then you can E-mail me at gibbage@lycos.com and we can find other forms. It does not need to be money. It can be books or research data. I accept anything in relation to the PBY Catalina that will help me with the project.

With all those new regulations for getting the bonus, it seems like PayPal ought to advance you at least $10 for going through all that trouble. (US)$10 is what one local bank just offered me (via junkmail) just to start an account with them.

I will go back and checkout PayPal, later, but I am not going in with the expectation of a bonus, now. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

To be taken seriously I recommend you stop with rude and ignorant posts like the foolish crap, displayed above. I also recommend YOU learn to speak to people in the manner you would like to be spoken too yourself or you are going to end up banned here before you have even begun "Mr above ten posts."

Good day/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif
