I just did a quick serach on the web. What I have found http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif :

Costs in WWII dolars

P-47: about $50,000
P-51: about $51,000

Allowing for inflation of about a factor of ten to the present day: about $500,000 each.

Contemporary costs:

M1A1 Unit Replacement Cost - $4,300,000
M2IFV Average unit cost $3.166 million

F-16C/D Unit cost $FY98 - $26.9 million [final order]
F/A-18C/D Unit cost $FY98 - $39.5 million
F/A-18E/F Unit cost $FY98 - $60 million
F-15A/C Unit cost $FY98 - $43 million
F-15I (Israel) - almost $100 million

Offered to Brazil, in US$ million
F-16C 50/52 - 30
Mirage 2000-5 - 50
JAS39C Gripen - 54
Su-35 - 40
Eurofighter EF-2000 - 100

Best summarized: "It is an indication of the evolution to greater sophistication and expense of modern fighter aircraft that a half-million dollars wouldn't even buy a light attack aircraft, much less a first line fighter."

Amazing, isn´t it?

"Never wrestle with a pig; you both get dirty but the pig enjoys it!"
