View Full Version : REMOVE the big border around the in-flight map

What about it? Take the big stitched border off the in-flight map. A small line border around the map would certainly be less distracting.

But that would take a little bit of the immersive factor out...how about an option for 'simplified map on/off'?

I agree with nearmiss.

Anyway there is no immersion in any map pasted to the sky.

Jeez, LEXX. I don't know what to say except: have I ever said ANYthing you like?

Maybe you'd prefer the map on the pilot's thigh (which is invisible), or maybe you'd like an inflight map where you couldn't even see the cockpit at all?

Can you tell me truthfully that you see no immersion factor by the attempt at making the edges of the map look as if it's part of a pilot's kit? I appreciate the attempt.

Did you know that in some aircraft, a 'map pasted on the sky' would have been an immense aid compared to the things like map shelves that actually pulled out over the control stick (Wildcat)?

I can't even please you on a compromise...

I wouldn't mind one bit making it square also, about as high as it's wide now, with the thin border would be even better.

One must look down at the (empty) cockpit seat to see the map. The map should be pasted, always fixed, on the seat only. This models, or simulates, the real life maps being carried by the pilot. Also, on the cockpit seat should be a standard pilot's watch (enlarged somewhat) because many pits don't have clocks.

Now, this is Immersion.

For the Cockpit Off population, that Option can enable the map to be pasted to the sky with no loss in realism. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Totally I agree !
1- No borders
and also...
2- bright colour for player aircraf (white is often camouflage in landscape)
3- simply and smaller aicrafts shapes
4- padlock on player aicraft, no mouse movement for targeting my plane in the center of the map, please!

Don't you think now someone will say: I don't like this map pasted on the seat, and where's my pilot's legs? I guess my point on the whole thing is that there's no visible pilot in game. So there was a concession to playability to be made. To me, immersion doesn't include visible things balanced on an invisible pilot's thigh. I can ignore the whole invisible pilot thing, but visible things that the invisible pilot might have on his lap is something that I can't rightly say if I'd be OK with or not.

I do agree that a time 'hack' watch should be integrated somehow, although I'm not sure just how, since it's on our invisible pilot's wrist.

oh, BTW- I have never flown with the cockpit off in FB. The map on the sky doesn't bug me much because I can easily see how a folded map may be held in one hand up to the pilot's face for ease of reading. I can also see how a folded map may be put in a small leather case with stitched edges. The map simply doesn't bug me in the slightest.

... I always print the briefing-Screen (with the card-section I need). This way, I can:

- make notes during the briefing (location of AA-guns etc.)
- mark the target-area (ground-targets)
- use the map "full real" (compare with what I can see looking out of the window)
- read the briefing text again during the flight

You want realism? Print the maps and tuck them into a clip beside your joystick or on your chair.

For me the border poses little or no problem. I just turn the map off when I want to look at something else.

That'll work if you know where you are. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

There is always a workaround among IL2-FB users.

I use the map for 8X to the engagement area, and then I drop it to normal just before I enter the area. So, I'm probably using it as a kind of radar. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Actually, thats what I do, use print out maps. I just use the full maps, didn't bother to download all the sub~sections. Too much time.
