At the start of a PvP (or even a PvE), what guides you in selecting a card?

If your opponent moves first, then you have a clue for countering, but say you wanted to take an early initiative. What do you consider?

I run a Sci-Fi / Fantasy deck with neutral card PC Principal thrown in as my only tank. If he's available I drop him behind my new kid just before my energy hits 10 points. If he's not available but my Cyborg Kenny is up I'll drop him out front ... a lot of players don't run decks that can deal with his 10 second mind control feature and quite often get a 1/3 health off of the enemy in the first 20 seconds.

Best bet if you're still learning the cards is to drop a cheap card or a tank behind your new kid just before 10 energy and then play reactively to what the enemy does.
