Sorry if it's too much trouble to search through il2skins, but that's what the rest of us have to do. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/mockface.gif It's got some good search functions btw.
Cheers!

You should just check out the Top downloads at http://www.il2skins.com

The general top xx and the top xx for your favorite aircraft.
Then just look which skins you like and look up more from those author's

Some top skinners are mentioned, but there are more skinners doing a great job. Besides, skinners often focus on a few specific aircraft, so they might not have done the one you are looking for.

By the way, Serval: I took the liberty to address Leadspitter to the 1 JaVa website to find more info on the camouflage of fighters in the Dutch East Indies: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?q=Y&a=tpc&s=400102&f=23110283&m=247102595&p=2

Hope you guys are looking forward to Pacific Fighters.

@widgeon: True quite some good skinners do not post at il2skins. I've liked the ones I know from Skinners Heaven (follow my sig).

@superaereo: it's allways OK to advertise for my site http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
Though I think his colors are OK. As he posted he has a profile from the best Dutch book around on the subject of Dutch camouflage.

I'll put in my 2 cents in the proper subject.

Advertising your website is a pleasure Serval! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I thought all the Curtiss for the NEIAF were finished in the factory with two tones of olive drab to start with, same as for the Brewsters.

Can I ask, what is the book you mentioned? And are there any good + reliable references online for Dutch camouflage and markings (1930's-WW2)?

Thank you.

You are correct. But the colors were known to fade quite fast. That is why you see one of the two very often in a brownish shade.

This is the book:
http://www.ipms.nl/pim/camoboek.html

It's in Dutch and not available anymore.

I don't know any on-line sources about the Dutch camouflage. And as far as there are, they mostly translate to FS 595b colors, which are often quite off.

Thank you Serval. I haven't touched a scale model for twenty plus years but somehow I have kept the curiosity about camouflage schemes I had when I was a teenager.

Are there any really valid free alternatives to Photoshop to make skins? The Gimp maybe? Or does one need to buy PS to have a go?

Gimp is a good alternative and Paintshop Pro is good and not very expensive.

BTW: I hope to add the RAL chart as soon as I find the time to do so.

I've got a copy of Photoshop Elements 2.0 now, I paid $35 at Wal-Mart for it, usually it's around $50 (hehe, they priced it wrong). It can do anything that you need to do skinning wise.

Lets see, Already seen Hammered, Canon Uk, Leadspitter,Tony T,Java_Serval mentioned.

I wouldn't hesitate to add Bo Nidle and ATS142 to any list of best skins, Bo has many very nice Stangs up at IL2skins and ATS142 has the Lightning refined to art.

What skin is the best it very much a matter of taste. Tchaika, Hammered, Canon UK and many other have made some really wonderful skins, particularly for German planes. Luftwaffe paintschemes are exciting and picturesque, but I have a weakness for worn, British planes. To my eyes, the best skin out there is one by Compans (his first even?), Paul Richey's Hurricane. This skin features a lot in the Screenshot thread, so I guess I'm not alone.

Here's the skin:

I wasn't mentioned, I'm just spamming the place http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

Not to name anyone, I gave the advise to do some top downloads (and preferably for every aircraft over the general top 10, so you also meet less known good skinners).

But true, they are also very good. And we could name another 10 or 20 (also depending on taste).
