View Full Version : How would you feel about a War Fan wielding class?

I don't know about how historically accurate it is but I'm kinda interested in an assassin Fan Geisha type of class.

Or maybe a Vanguard with a war fan that looks like a pear...

I have seen videos of a warfan in use but it seems that for the most part it is for blocking, used to add leverage in armlocks or paired with a dagger. The dynasty warriors image of Zhuge Liang or one of the sisters who dual wield them cutting through swathes of enemies doesn't hold true in anything I have seen.

I wouldn't complain, probably wouldn't use it either but everyone has their tastes.

I have fond memories of the fan geisha from battle realms that's why i thought about having them in for honor. I would love a dagger/war fan combo but do the metal fans hold any historical usage for combat or assasination?

I imagine the cherry blossom effect would look good with it.

Sorry if it's weird :(

A quick google search gave me the wiki page and a few youtube vids.

This is a kata with two fans https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzQaXWjZ2iw

A guy demonstrating strikes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlCRvKsm8bM

This is a broadsword vs a fan but it is very staged https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyCjZHS6fX4

I saw one a while a go last time this topic came up of a guy using a tessen and knife demonstrating techniques where the fan was used to leverage the opponent and he had one that ended with a knife across the throat that would have been a perfect execute, can't seem to find that vid. If you're looking for a martial art, tessenjutsu or tessenjitsu tends to be what it goes by, In a proper fight? I want to say no because of range, a dagger at least has a lunge behind a point going for it, but retractable warfans made of steel, I can see where snapping it out to block or back in to strike with the edge might be viable. It also has the advantage of it it looks decorative enough you could get one into a place that does not allow weapons, so there might feasibly be a group of people learning with that in mind in this game world.

I wouldn't mind War fans, even steel fans for that matter. When I heard they were making a new Samurai I thought, Geisha with fans or a Monk with Bo Staff.

Two unique weapons that would have a unique playstyle and moveset.

Geisha would be gender locked to female because the devs love gender lock and Monk would be female and male or just male.

Hopefully they will make these characters down the road, because even though Samurai is the weakest Faction in the Story and in the Multiplayer they are still fun to play.

In my opinion, a small girl with a stick with a knife on it (nobushi) doing more damage than a 6 foot long double handed sword welded by a monster of a man (highlander) is ridiculous enough. If they add a geisha with a couple fans that kill people, they may as well add Martha Stuart with a couple wooden spoons as the next hero.

Hey don't underestimate the capability of a good sturdy stick ;)

Oh ofcourse how could a petite girl with little blades, kill a large man with a tree log in his hand and not get knocked unconscious with one swing of that blunt object?

But it's a video game so logic is out the window. :P

If I recall a thread way way back, like March or April way way back, the peacekeeper is actually as tall as the nobushi (if not as curvaceous or at least the coin toss emote makes nobushi look like she has more meat on her bones) when they are both in neutral stance, it is that the peacekeeper crouches while the nobushi has her arms raised that makes them seem so different.

Yea I think I remember that thread. I know Peacekeeper has major back problems always leaning forward like that. Makes her seem like a Fly when she's actually a Wasp.

Thanks for the vids. They were very entertaining, at least now I see some sort of plausibility in combat applications of a war fan. I think a parry/deflect-centric assassin with deliberate/slow-ish attacks would be fun to play as. I dunno how that would balance out without making the character purely defensive though.

I apologize if the idea ruins the sense of immersion for some. :(:

I mean they have LB in that game, who doesnt nothing but pin you when you are not looking or do block shoves to get free hits or parry top unblockable, a purely defensive character. Rarely swings and play almost 100% safe.

I wouldn't mind a defensive samurai, only one we have is Shugoki but he literally has 4 moves and can't be offensive unless he throws you to a wall. If the fan user has a way to play both offensively and defensively like the Highlander that would be fun. Or atleast be able to fight back without relying heavily on turtling.

Hey no worries on that, the cardinal rule for me since people said shinobi doesn't belong in this game is if the devs believe it does, it does, and I am sure ideas are always valued. Different people, different tastes etc.
