I haven't seen much in the forums on this subject the last 2 days. I may have missed the flurry of activity last week while vacationing in the Dominican Republichttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Does it live up to expectations? Are people flying it? What is the closest plane that it compares to in FB? Is it it competetive?

Closest plane to it? Probably the Yak3. The L.F. CW Spit (no year mentioned, I assume '43 though) will turn with the Yak3 - Ace AI at least - on the deck. Takes ages to overheat, cools down easily (behaves rather like an air-cooled engine to be honest), and has serious firepower with limited ammo.

All 4 are really nice flying aircraft in AEP. It's just a damn shame they all have that ghey ring handle. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I really like the spit. After flying the p-38, p-51s and some others, I find myself gravitating more and more to the 43 clipped wing spit. It is hard to stall especially when you keep up the speed. It can really turn. I will normally hit flaps (doesn't have combat only landing)reduce throttle and literally pull the stick all the way back. I only keep the landing flaps on very briefly so as not to jam the flaps. The clipped wing version rolls very well, not like a FW190 but not far off from it. The guns have 2 cannon and 4 .30 cal which in conjunction do plenty of damage although when close I took down a p-38 with only the .30 cals. The only complaint I have is I wish it was a little faster. I haven't tried CEM yet to see if I can squeeze more speed out of it. At low and medium altitudes and at medium to low speeds, its hard to beat. You just got to wait until the fast aircraft B&Zers make a mistake while easily dodging them. When they slow down, then you got em. A very fun plane to fly.

Easy to stall if you jerk the stick. If you pull back on it gently all the way then no stall. Jerk it back a just little and you roll out like you were in Fw or something.

One of the tightest turning birds available. It has decent all around performance but not exceptional in really any of them. It's definitely a "pilot's" ride. Like the 109, many will fly it but only a few will be formiddable in it. As it should be.

Not quite like a Yak3, I would compare it more to a Yak 1b. Its slower than its contemporaries, but outturns them all.

I haven't tried the Spit yet but I will say it's good enough to get some dedicated n00b-3 (Yak-3) pilots out of their Yaks and into the Spits.

I havn't spent much time in the spit but I have been in two very good online furballs with it (they were coops).

The base model Mk.Vb performed well against the Fw-190A4's I was fighting. It could soundly out turn them at most speeds. At high speeds my spit and the Fw's were even and limited by blackout only. Overheating was not much of an issue but flying full WEP all the time is not possible. At low altitudes the Fw-190A4's held a massive speed advantage as well as superior climb rate. At 5000m my spit began to catch them in climbs but they were still much faster in level flight. Firepower is excellent but ammo is very limited. My overall impression of the base model Mk.V is good. It is a capable turn fighter but lacks in top speed.

The Mk.Vb LF is inferior by a good margin. I flew it in a similer coop against more Fw-190A4's and my team got its *ss whooped. All but 1 of my team mates survived but none of the enemies were shot down. We all landed with no ammo and some of us were full of holes. The LF initially has little tendancy to overheat but after 10 minutes or so she overheats at 80% power with radiator fully open. To make matters worse, the combat effective ceiling of it is only 3000m. Above that and you are a sitting duck. In my oppinion, the Spit Mk.Vb LF is one of the worst planes in FB/AEP.

The Spits in general are not comfortable for me to fly. Amoung the shortcomings here is a lack of aileron trim. You can adjust the rudder trim but then you have to constantly apply aileron to keep it from rolling. Takeoffs and landings are a breeze with it but taxiing is dangerous. The plane tips from side to side very easily and so any sharp turns may result in a damaged wing or a nose over. The cockpit layout is average. Visibility is good in all directions. Overall I like the Spits but I wouldn't take an LF if I had a choice.

Anyone who doesn't think the Spitfire is fast enough is going to love the LF IX thats coming. She'll be plenty fast...not quite as much as the hotrod XIV but good enough http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

It was the first plane I flew, and it took me awhile to switch to the TA152(2nd favorite?/still deciding).I love them both, but the Spitfire is the most attractive plane ever built IMO.
Lots of fun to fly,and the guns sound great too.
