I've got an offer to buy an ATI Radeon 9600 for a very cheap price instead of my QDI GeForce FX5200...

The Radeon is a non-ultra, non-XT...

Even though it is not a Pro version, the increase in performance should put a big smile on your face. Trust me, I know since I upgraded from FX5200 to R9600Pro. At first I just could not believe the difference.

The R9600 hold everything FX5200 promises to do, and more!

I would say wait a little longer. The gains would be much greater with one of the higher end cards and once ATI and Nvidia release their new technology in a couple months the prices will fall even further.

If you're interested in going with the Radeon, get the 9800 pro in another month or so.

well it's a littlebit used, so it's VERY cheap, especially in my country to be where everything is so ******* expensive ;p

I have to agree with T-Bolt. 9800 PRO OEMs are as low as $200.00 right now and when you talk about most bang for the buck, paying $200.00 for a card that is only 2nd to the 9800 XT makes me think that ATI is making some bucks right now to be able to allow the base price of the 9800 PRO to drop so low.

Good for us.:)

You say very cheap... if its 50% less then get it..cant hurt..... I just picked up a 9800Pro for $199US. Sure the card will most likely go down a bit but not much... I still see 9500Pros for the same price.

What's worth getting for about 100? With my
geforce 3 I am getting about 25 fps at 1024x768x32
with otherwise medium settings, and not much more
than half this online.

Hi there rhett!

Basically, I use maximum setting for everything. A few days ago I started playing with perfect, and it's so nice looking that I can't go back to excelleng, although I pay a rather high price in therms of FPS for all the eye-candy. Add a resolution of 1024x768 @ 32 bit and 4xAA and 8xAF to that.

Still, the game is more than playable at these settings, it's just that I've been so spoiled with how smooth it was with excellent settings.

Perhaps I should add that my card is quite severely overklocked, but I've seen worse on the net. Currently I run the core at 480 MHz (400 stock) and memory at 320 (stock 300). I've had it even higher, but then the stability becomes an issue, with very little gain in performance.

Hope this helps!

Jasko

Guys! IS it worth buying this Radeon to a price of 69.97 USD / 37.63 GBP??

Yes!

If the card is in mint condition, the price is very good!

As I said it's a very good price: if the card is in good working it's a real bargain: buy it!!!

Your "old" FX5200?? How old could it be?? The FX series hasn't been out that long, has it?? I would never feel sorry for you if you stick with your FX, since I have a TI-4600 Ultra that is not even AGP8X!! It's only AGP4X..........But has FX really been out that long? I bet your FX trashes my GF 4600!!

Hallo Metallicaner,

I would say definitive NO to a standard R9600.

One Picture is worth 1000 words so check this out: http://www4.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/images/image009.gif
(your 5200 and R9600 are side by side).

If you intend to use all the Antialiasing and Anisotropic filtering etc etc then the R9600 is definitively better:
http://www4.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/images/image019.gif
(but NOT what you should be buying now a days)

IF you already use the FX5200 in your PC, updating the drivers and switching to ATI R9600 will be a hussle. NOT WORTH IT for such a small performance improvement (Hunter82 has done some very good posting on how to switch between ATIs and nVideas without problems...)

All you need to know about graphics cards is here: http://www4.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/index.html

If you get a R9700 second hand, that's good value for money (look at the performance).

Otherwise, R9800 rocks! Flying perfect settings with high fps is a dream! And the new ACE pack has even better configuration for the graphics!

IN ANY CASE: stay away from anything that has the word SE printed on it!

A R9800 for 200USD is fantastic but NOT is it is a R9800SE LOL (look at the performance graphic). (A 9800SE is as fast as a 9600XT)

Prices in Germany:
SaphireAtlantisRadeon 9600XT 128MB at EUR170,--
SaphireAtlantisRadeon 9600XT 256MB at EUR185,--
SaphireAtlantisRadeon 9800XT 256MB at EUR455,-- :(((( ...but as I already have one :)

Hope it helped
