Hi,

Does anyone know of any top-notch ww2 air combat movies on dvd?

I just rented "tora tora tora!" which captures the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese...and the planes (B17, zeros, and p51s) were awesome. The movie used full-scale models in real flight! Highly recommened to supplement the il2 experience. There was an awesome dogfight scene between p51 and zeros and also attacks of zeros on the b17 bombers. Nice documentary to go along and explain the strategics/history behind this all.

What you are referring to as P-51s were P-40s.

Also, the Japanese planes were modified AT-6 Texans. IIRC, there were no flying models used in the movie, but there were P-40 and PBY mockups on the ground that were destroyed.

One more interesting note, the B-17 that landed on one wheel was not part of the movie, but some film footage that had been shot earlier on the spur of the moment, that the producers thought would be great in the movie.

There are very few air combat movies with reasonably authentic aircaft.

Look for The battle of britain with Michael Caine etc. They had virtualy the whole Spanish airforce of 111s & 109s flying - OK technicaly the machines are technicaly updated with Merlin engines big air scoops etc. but that's detail.

I think they used a lot of the cut film footage
in Dark Blue World - haven't seen it yet.

The battle of midway was a great watch if you liked tora tora tora.

Have a look for the dambusters - OK the special effects are toytown compared with modern film - but there is real footage of Lancasters being thrown around at zero altitude over the English lakes - it still takes your breath away.

Memphis Belle is a bit US bubblegum story, but great plane and I think there is some authentic gun cam footage if I remember right.

Some of the guys have been going on about piece of cake - which is apparently a TV mini series just out on DVD - but only availiable on US zone DVDs for the moment.

Other than that there is a real dearth of decent films. I suspect it's not getting easy to field a full authentic cast of planes and the next generation of flight films will be computer generated.....in which case fly your own film on IL2......

Yes there is guncam footage as well as footage from other B-17s but nothing I would use as reference, they all show bombers burning out of the sky and exploding, the letters of the deceased aircrew being read while showing the footage adds so much to the movie. It really makes you feel the loss of all the pilots and aircrew that were lost in the skies all over the world during the War. Its a very touching moment in the movie, I really like in the end when they put "This movie is dedicated to all those that fought and died, whatever their nationality, in the greatest airiel battle in the history of the world." I could be off by a few words.

Michael Caine starred in BoB.

Check out TWELVE O CLOCK HIGH with Gregory Peck. FLYING LEATHERNECKS, also THE FLYING TIGERS with John Wayne. 633 SQUADRON with Cliff Robertson. I believe there was a pilot movie for BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP called THE BLACK SHEEP SQUADRON. The older movies are kind of weak, but they have better combat footage in my opinion. If you are just looking for combat footage in documentary films, there are hundreds, and you can go to the History or Discovery channels websites or Amazon.com and do a search for anything and everything.

I know that there are many many more movies out there, but those 4 or 5 I listed jumped into my mind right away. It will be interesting to see what we can come up with here.

I thought either Michael Caine or Sean Connery (unless it had Julie Christie being naughty, in which case, they were superfluous) were required to be in every British movie made from 1964 to 1978, so one of them HAD to be in Battle of Britain...

cheers

definitively get Piece of Cake, you can easily order it by Amazon US or import it through a local videostore(as i did to save import tax), its really really nice, a lot of combat flying in it and authentic spitfires..and a decent story, actually the novel its based on by Derek Robinson(many more great pilot novels by him) is even better as the film series and its about a hurricane squad not about spitfire like in the film.

Dark blue world is also nice, the love story is not too outspread, combatscenes are quite welldone and gripping..

dont forget Pearl Harbour, of course its very much Hollywood and love story etc., but still, i like the combat scenes and there are quite a few of them.
