View Full Version : Smoke plumes from buildings?

When an aircraft crashes, it leaves a plume of smoke burning for some while. Would it be at all practicable for buildings or vehicles that have been bombed or strafed to similarly leave a suitable plume of smoke and flame?

I realise this might cause a slight slow down in performance for some cards, but it would look more convincing to see evidence of a bombing raid still smouldering away after the attacking planes have departed.

I agree.

That would be nice...I think there should be some limiter on how many of these you could have going at one time but some kind of smoke rising away from a heavily bombed urban area would be nice.

I would like to see it randomized..even for planes... sometimes she plumes...sometimes she doesnt..just like it was.

Oleg has made noises about "limitations of PCs" when asked about this before. I think he'd enjoy showing us a realistic virtual Stalingrad rather than the relatively 'clean' model has has in FB. Look at it this way, I watch the (excellent) Secret Weapons over Stalingrad video right before watching Enemy at the Gates. Comparatively FB simply has no detail at all, no rubble let alone smoke. BoB may look better, whatever Oleg puts out in 2009 will look like a movie in every detail.

And people will complain about the bodies half-buried in rubble, saying that the demographic proportions aren't accurate.

But on the other hand Oleg added dust clouds at take off, spraying water when flying low over water and smoke columns at crash sites. Why?

I don't see why large smoke plumes could not be handled in the same way as clouds are in the game right now, and the clouds don't even slow down my mediocre system much.

All games, including Il-2, need less fireballs and more smoke, dust and flying dirt. People watch too many movies.

Reading the original post brought to mind something else that detracts from realism- the lack of delayed secondary explosions. When you bomb a factory (or vehicle) you get the expected fiery eruption but this quickly fades away to nothing. In real life you might expect to see later explosions from the same object- either munitions detonating or drums of fuel exploding. Or, in an industrial context, chemicals such as tins of paint or pressurised gas. The point being of course that these delayed explosions only occur after some flashpoint temperature has been reached by the burning surroundings- after 5, 10 or 15 minutes.
I would have thought this was quite easy to do- but then I'm not a programmer.

In the FMB, you can place airstrip fires inside buildings, that way when a bldg is destroyed, it will "reveal" the fire.
Similarly, a truck or jeep placed inside a bldg that will be easily destroyed if the building is strafed /rocketed/ bombed will smoke for awhile after the bldg is destroyed.
Just a thought-

I just tried placing one or two fires inside the buildings as suggested and they work fine as small residual post-raid fires. I then tried the jeep or truck in a building idea. They duly exploded when I hit the building with rockets or bombs but only left small plumes for a few seconds.

I then planted a few flyable aircraft (not static ones) inside a hangar or two. I set them as 'normal fly' but at zero metres and with no waypoints set. As soon as I started the mission they duly exploded and I then had nicely destroyed buildings with large plumes of smoke, so this is great as long as you're happy to have a raid already in progress when you start the mission.

I then tried allocating a couple of planes to fly at 50 metres in normal fly, dropping to 2 metres and lined up with appropriate hangars. Good idea for a Kamikaze mission on ships, I thought, but although the waypoints were precise they refused to fly into the buildings, circling around aimlessly instead. One plane finally skipped and bounced across the ground (not in line with any of the buildings!), then exploded. However, this time there was no plume of smoke.
I shall persevere with this . . .

It'd be a good thing if the individual user had some control over how many smoke plumes and how long they persisted, similar to the decal and corpse options in FPS games.
