I am an avid military flight sim junkie, ever since 1985 I have been flying personal computer flight simulations but I also consider myself an avid grunt gamer. Games like Hidden & Dangerous and Operation Flashpoint fill up my weekly game time. I was very surprised to see this picture of an La-5 FN being ported over to be used in Operation Flashpoint! Even the OPF gamers recognized the plane and knew where the 3D model came from, Oleg's IL2!!! If this doesn't make IL2 popular then I don't know what will, keep up the good work Oleg!

Actually OFP qualifies as a hard core FPS sim so it isn't suprising to see that OFP and IL2/FB users are the same people to an extent. I play OFP a bit (I'm a sniper with an AK/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif ) when I'm not playing FB. I also play MOHAA alot, but those players don't usually mix with sim players.

As we all know, the Soviet Union had too many fighter pilots during WW2. So Stalin's scientists came up with a brillient way to solve this problem. They would make some of their pilots fly British made Hurricanes. The Hurricane was an uber flying coffin. It was designed to maximize pilot kills by providing nothing but fabric and a few wooden spars around the cockpit. This setup prevented the pilot from escaping easily while at the same time not interfering with enemy bullets and shrapnel trying to pass through it. The rest of the Hurricanes structure was designed to ricochet bullets and shrapnel into the cockpit. And thanks to the cockpits superb design, all of them would pass through the cockpit and the pilot inside with little difficulty. Of course the Hurricane's designers didn't stop there. In order for the Hurricane to become a flying coffin, they had to make it easy to shoot. They did this by making the Hurricane the slowest monoplane fighter in use at the time and even gave it a very bulky shape so that it would be easy to spot and hit. The final feature of the Hurricane was its ability to bury or cremate itself. And because it was made of biodegradable materials, the Hurricane was environmentally friendly after it buried itself. Because of these brillient features, the Hurricane was a perfect flying coffin and helped the Soviets solve the pilot surplus they were suffering.

Yep, I played OFP ALOT before FB came out and so did quite a few other FB players.

There does seem to be a connection with simmers and these two fine products. Also, the "in game" movie making ability with OFP is the best that I have ever seen! The movie making ability via recorded tracks with FB is well known. Some of the best "in game" movies I've ever seen were made by OFP players and the load of talented movie makers in this community continues to grow. Glad to see each get recognized by the others community, great stuff!

NTESLA, the "movies" I speak of in terms of OFP are really in game intros, outros and cut scenes that are all part of game missions. You must have OFP to "see" these because they are really just part of a mission.

BTW, do you have OFP? If so, just do a google search for OFP and you'll get the best sites at the top of the search and via links on these top sites.

ahh OK, yes I do have OPF and Resistance. I did make some Intros for few of my own made missions, wish IL2 to have same techniques for camara takes as found in OPF.

Thanks.

Ahh, so you know what I mean. We made several missions with real cinematics for OFP, but never got them to the point for public release. Mainly because of the mission size and that they weren't polished for release. we couldn't get the lipsync program to work properly.

The last mission we were working on had an eight minute blockbuster intro with a newscast, battlefield reports, nice in game cut scenes and a newcast outro.

Yes, I really wish that FB allowed for some of the cinematics that OFP allows, we could get our two studios together for a great mini movie! Oh well such is life. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

UCLANUPE, funny thing you brought that up, brining the two studios together to do a film. I have an idea of making a short-mini series but with an in depth story line from a pilots point of view during the war from both sides of the war (Soviet and Nazi)...not just about the plane but the human aspect of the whole thing to give it that extra immersion factor into this simulation. But with limited tools...I just don't know yet on how to pull it off but still thinking on how to.

Funny you mention that because that is exactly what we've been trying to work out ourselves. The orignal concept was the combo of OFP and FB footage, but OFP does not like its video to be captured /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif , so we scrapped that concept. One of my partners won't give it up and is still trying to find the nirvana between OFP and "any" video capture format without success. I think DVI is the only real way to bring OFP out of OFP and into a "good" looking movie.

A long time ago in the game SWOTL a fellow did a mini campaign about a german pilot called "Lucky". The name of the campaign was called "Lucky Strikes". We have done some prelim script work of this as a movie concept and like the direction that it is going.

Wow great minds think alike? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif . Anyway, my partners love your stuff and the idea of working together in the near future is a idea that they are open too. So, if you really want to give it a go on some level, let me know in a PM. I think we have shared enough with the public, for now. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

UCLANUPE,

Good, let me do some brainstorming to see how we can make something interesting for the crowd here.

LeadSpitter,

OPF is what you are asking for but the flight models are very primative at best. Either OPF developers focus and much better FM for their aircraft or Oleg's group focuses to add something like OPF to his virtual universe. They are both ex-eastern front developers, don't see why they can't do a spin-off virtual battlefield sim! OPF for me is the closest thing that I've seen to it by far.
